Chapter 78: Offering Oneself in Gratitude
Chapter 78: Offering Oneself in Gratitude
Gu Xinyan knew Xu Xiangbei was being silly again, "You’re fantasizing again, can’t you be a bit more serious?"
"Only with dreams can you have ideals."
"Please carry me upstairs."
Xu Xiangbei once again carried Gu Xinyan, enjoying the happiness of the Pigsy carrying his wife.
Gu Xinyan gave his ear a tight twist, warning, "Don’t move around carelessly, or I’ll rip off your ear."
Xu Xiangbei grimaced, withdrawing his hand. This sounded so familiar; Ding Keke had just said this morning, and now Gu Xinyan too. Are all these women too unruly? They all love twisting ears.
Just as he carried Gu Xinyan up the stairs, Gu Xiangyi’s surprised voice came from downstairs, "What are you two doing?"
He never expected Gu Xiangyi to come back at this time, nearly causing Xu Xiangbei to fall from the stairs. He steadied himself, turned back with a raised brow, grinning mischievously, "Can’t you see it’s Pigsy carrying his wife?"
Gu Xinyan gave his ear another hard twist, "Stop talking nonsense, carry me to the third floor."
He carried Gu Xinyan to the living room on the third floor, put her on the sofa, and Xu Xiangbei sat beside her, panting. Gu Xiangyi joked, "Aren’t you supposed to be quite the strong one? How come carrying my sister upstairs leaves you this exhausted?"
Xu Xiangbei feigned distress, patting his arm as if very tired, "Your sister ate all the food, and I had to carry her up and down twice. I’m exhausted; I don’t even have the strength to walk now."
Gu Xiangyi’s smile deepened, "Didn’t you eat? I just passed by KFC and bought a family bucket intending for Xin Yan to eat. I left it on the living room table. Do you want some? If not, I’ll take it back to the office."
Hearing there was a bucket to eat, Xu Xiangbei hurried downstairs, "Of course, I want it; I’m starving."
After Xu Xiangbei left, Gu Xinyan explained with a smile, "Sister, my wheelchair broke, so I asked Brother Xiangbei to carry me downstairs to eat."
Gu Xiangyi looked at her sister Gu Xinyan’s face like discovering a new world, trying to decipher her sister’s true feelings. "Did you really not do anything? How could it be; why are you smiling so happily, and calling him Brother Xiangbei? Did he threaten you with something?"
Gu Xinyan didn’t realize she had undergone some subtle changes, "Do I look threatened to you? Didn’t I smile before? What was I like before?"
Seeing her sister was unhurt, Gu Xiangyi was finally at ease and complained, "Sister Wu agreed to come over and cook at noon, but she didn’t come, nor did she call me. Luckily, I called her to find out she wasn’t coming."
Gu Xinyan generously said, "It’s okay, Sister Wu has to take care of the Elder, she can’t leave."
Sister also understood Sister Wu’s difficulties, sighed helplessly, "Sigh, it’s not that she can’t leave, perhaps someone is stopping her. What did you have for lunch, you look well-fed, with some grease around your mouth."
Gu Xiangyi took out a wet tissue to wipe the grease from her sister’s mouth.
"I had potato and ribs stew."
Brushing aside the hair on her forehead, a gentle look flashed in Gu Xiangyi’s eyes, "Who knew that guy could cook."
"Despite being annoying sometimes, he’s quite likable when it counts."
Sister Gu Xiangyi tidied her sister up, kindly reminding, "Silly girl, you’re too innocent. Men can be very cunning and dangerous; don’t be fooled by their momentary acts of kindness. Seeing you’re safe after lunch, I’m relieved and have to get back to my work."
The sisterly bond ran deep, and Gu Xinyan nodded sensibly, releasing her sister’s hand, smiling firmly, "Go focus on your work; I can take care of myself, no need to worry about me."
Watching her sister’s hurried departure, her expression darkened again. She tried moving her legs, a sharp pain shooting through, realizing it would take a long time before she could move as freely as a normal person.
She thought of Xu Xiangbei, the man who brought her endless hope.
She called downstairs, "Brother Xiangbei, Brother Xiangbei."
Xu Xiangbei, hearing Gu Xinyan call for him, came running cheerfully, with a half-eaten drumstick in his hand, "Fairy sister, what’s up? Missed me after just a few minutes? Or do you want to eat my drumstick?"
"I’m not interested in drumsticks, but how long will it take for my leg to be completely normal?"
Seeing Gu Xinyan with her pitiful look made Xu Xiangbei feel a twinge of sympathy. Recently, he had been using up his inner strength, not having enough to treat her leg.
"My dear lady, I’m too tired now; there’s no strength left to treat your leg."
Gu Xinyan’s expression faltered slightly, thinking Xu Xiangbei was deliberately being difficult. She silently made up her mind, face cold, "What will it take for you to have the strength?"
Xu Xiangbei cheerfully replied, "If you’re willing to be my wife, having such a beautiful wife, I’d be in a good mood every day, and thus have strength every day."
This time, Gu Xinyan didn’t flinch but courageously spoke, "Okay, I agree with you, as long as you can heal my leg."
Xu Xiangbei was overjoyed, almost drooling, "Oh, you really agree?"
"You’re a grown man, not as bold as I am. I agreed, and yet you’re hesitating?"
Never did he expect Gu Xinyan, who seemed weak on the outside, to be so strong and determined inside.
Xu Xiangbei was slightly stunned, asked, "You better think it through; it isn’t me, Xu Xiangbei, forcing you."
"I can be your wife, but you must heal my leg and stay away from my sister. Can you do that?"
Xu Xiangbei suspected Gu Xinyan was teasing him, unable to understand how the always conservative Gu Xinyan could change so much suddenly: "So many conditions, you’re making it like a trade deal, it’s no fun."
Gu Xinyan smiled, gently approached Xu Xiangbei.
The fragrance was overwhelming.
Looking at Gu Xinyan’s jade-sculpture-like enchanting figure, Xu Xiangbei couldn’t help feeling hot in his gaze. He quickly jumped up from the sofa, tossing the half-eaten drumstick into the trash can.
"I’m going out to get something, wait for me for a bit."
