Chapter 52: Human Brake
Chapter 52: Human Brake
"Why’s he here?"
Black Rose looked at Xu Xiangbei getting out of the Santana, surprised, and sneered, "Is this guy an idiot? He’s actually brought a wreck of a car to make a fool of himself."
Originally, Black Rose thought Xu Xiangbei probably wouldn’t come to compete, since in her view, Xu Xiangbei was an outright coward who’d ditch a woman without hesitation when chased, only to turn tail and run. How could someone like him dare to race on a winding mountain road?
But unexpectedly, Xu Xiangbei really came.
Though, it was in a rundown Santana.
"Rose, you know this guy?"
Ah Jun, wearing a leather outfit, casually lit up a cigarette and gave Xu Xiangbei a sidelong glance, smiling indifferently.
"Don’t know him." Black Rose shook her head; she had absolutely no desire to know Xu Xiangbei.
Not far away, Hua Ji’s eyes lit up the moment he saw Xu Xiangbei, hurriedly approaching with a chuckle, "Mr. Xu, I’ve been waiting for you a long time, and you’ve finally arrived. Haha, the race is about to start. If you want to win, you need to dash to the mountaintop first and grab the flag."
Feeling everyone’s eyes converge upon him, Xu Xiangbei awkwardly smiled, "Sorry, my car doesn’t have a GPS and I nearly couldn’t find the place. Came late but didn’t miss the race. Folks, I’m not pointing fingers, but everyone here is trash. With me around, tonight’s million is in the bag, so go home, wash up, and sleep early."
Wow!
The crowd roared.
"Hahaha, this moron’s car doesn’t even have a GPS system, and he dares come to race?"
"Is this kid a fool? Driving a beat-up Santana and thinking he can compete for the championship? Our cars are top-notch, no way he’ll beat us."
"My Porsche—one wheel costs more than his entire car. To race alongside him, really devalues the race. Where does he get that confidence?"
All the racers shamelessly mocked, without reservation.
Xu Xiangbei didn’t mind, gave a laugh, glanced around, and spotted Black Rose in her leather outfit. He smiled and walked over, "Hey beauty, I’m here, don’t worry, I’ll help you win."
Black Rose glared at Xu Xiangbei in disgust, gritted her teeth, and spat out a word: "Scram!"
About a dozen members of the Motorcycle Gang burst into laughter.
Ah Jun sneered, looked at Xu Xiangbei with contempt, and shouted, "Kid, where are you from? Some shabby loser dare to pursue Black Rose? Get lost, don’t claim you know us."
Xu Xiangbei gave Ah Jun a sidelong glance, shook his head with a smile, "Haha, see you on the track." With that, he turned and left with long strides, got into the Santana, and started warming up the engine.
"Rat, later I’ll leave this Xu Xiangbei to you."
Hua Ji instructed Rat beside him, "Don’t be hasty. Wait till other racers thoroughly leave him behind, then deal with him. Once the kid is dead, Boss Gu will reward you with five million cash, aside from the million deposit!"
The young man with studs on his lip grinned slyly, nodded, "Relax, Brother Hua Ji, I’ll make it like he silently plummeted off the cliff."
The two exchanged knowing smiles.
The young man nicknamed Rat got into a Porsche.
"Everyone, the race is about to start, please get ready."
Hua Ji yelled with a megaphone.
Vroom, vroom...
Suddenly, dozens of sports cars roared to the foot of the mountain, lining up at the start line with engines roaring, each sound louder than the next, each seemingly calling each other out.
Xu Xiangbei drove the Santana, slowly pulling up beside the Ferrari driven by Black Rose, and blew a flying kiss to Black Rose.
Black Rose grimly shut the car window, seemingly not wanting to see Xu Xiangbei for a second.
"Ready, go!"
Hua Ji announced.
Vroom...
In an instant, all the sports cars sped out, racing crazily toward the winding mountain road, each fighting to be first.
Within five seconds, Xu Xiangbei’s Santana was left isolated at the tail end, lagging behind the group.
No way around it, the Santana’s performance couldn’t compare with luxury cars. Although the rental company boss assured Xu Xiangbei it was a high-end modified beast, reality was still harsh.
"Haha, let’s pump up the music."
Xu Xiangbei wasn’t impatient at all, slowly driving, reaching out to turn on the car radio for some upbeat music.
"Hongguang Men’s Clinic, helping reclaim your vigor, restoring your manly essence, are you troubled nightly? Hongguang Men’s Clinic is your best choice..."
A blush-inducing advertisement blared from the radio.
Xu Xiangbei turned off the radio with a mixture of laugh and cry, seeing the car group ahead already pull away 100 or 200 meters; he finally stomped the gas pedal hard, speeding up.
"Hahaha, look at that wrecked Santana, it’s hilarious. Within five seconds, even its taillights disappeared."
"Real fool, with no money still tries racing, dreaming of winning a million. With odds that low, better off buying a lottery ticket."
"Tsk, Brother Hua Ji now pulls in all kinds of people; even pulling in migrant workers drops our circle’s status."
The spectators, all amused by the Santana’s performance, ridiculed without mercy.
Hua Ji slowly pulled out a Cuban cigar, clamped it in his mouth, lit it, and took a deep inhale, eyes fixed firmly on the first bend of the mountain road.
The first bend was about twenty meters high—a nearly 180-degree sharp turn. The bend was very narrow, only allowing two cars to pass side by side.
Moreover, the road wasn’t bordered by guardrails. In high-speed driving, if cars brushed against each other, it’s easy to lose control and fall off the cliff.
To smoothly navigate turns and earn a good rank, one had to seize a good position before turning, otherwise, once in the turn, overtaking was impossible, and nobody dared overtakes at bends.
Vroom...
King of Car Jack smoothly captured a favorable position, seizing the lead before entering the turn. His skillful driving slowed him down, maneuvering through the treacherous 180-degree sharp turn with near-perfect technique.
The cars behind lined up obediently, entering the bend one by one; no one dared overtakes recklessly.
Soon, the first bend came and went, and all the cars slammed on the gas, resuming their struggle for dominance.
Unnoticed by anyone, a Porsche turned off its lights, quietly parking at the corner’s blind spot, and a youth with colorful dyed hair and lip studs swiftly jumped out, carrying a fuel can. He poured a whole can of gasoline on the ground—none other than Hua Ji’s lackey, ’Rat.’
Apparently thinking it wasn’t enough, Rat fetched five or six more cans from the trunk, piling them in the middle of the road.
As Xu Xiangbei drove the Santana, he was bound to hit this pile of gasoline when navigating the bend. By then, Rat would only need to toss a lighter into the gas cans, and Xu Xiangbei’s car would immediately be engulfed in flames, losing balance, and falling off the cliff.
