Chapter 248 Mr. Kalia
Chapter 248 Mr. Kalia
On the sofa sat two foreigners with high noses and blue eyes. Upon seeing their faces clearly, Xu Xiangbei almost tripped over the doorstep.
It was the first time the two had seen Xu Xiangbei. They glanced at him indifferently, not knowing that Xu Xiangbei had already looked at them countless times.
They were the foreign guests from room 219 at the Crown Nightclub last night.
The difference between seeing someone on video and meeting them in person is noticeable.
To Xu Xiangbei, who has a slight case of prosopagnosia, all foreigners look the same, yet he immediately recognized Thomas.
The older, silver-haired man in a silver Armani suit was Thomas, the CEO of Three Lions Pictures, and the strong young man was his bodyguard.
It’s hard to tell foreigners’ ages; though Thomas had silver hair, his skin was rosy and full of vitality, appearing at most forty or fifty.
Sitting on the hospital bed was a skeletal old man, a white man with skin as white as paper, with root-like blue veins visible beneath.
The old man looked like a zombie skeleton; just add a pair of wings, and he could pass for a medieval vampire without makeup.
Sitting at the old man’s bedside was a strong, bald man, as fat as a small mountain, with a thick neck adorned with a large golden chain resembling Buddha Beads. The low-cut shirt revealed his dense chest hair.
Xu Xiangbei had met the two-hundred-pound Cui fatty from West City Martial Arts School, but compared to this burly man, Cui seemed slender.
The big man was engrossed in playing a game on his phone. When Xu Xiangbei entered, he gave a cold glance.
He intended to ask who Xu Xiangbei was but, seeing a bunch of doctors in white coats behind him, understood his identity and continued playing his game.
Seeing the doctors come in, Thomas stood up from the sofa, leaned slightly forward, and bowed respectfully to the old man: "Mr. Kalia, I hope you recover soon; we have other matters to attend to, so we’ll take our leave."
A faint, imperceptible smile appeared on Mr. Kalia’s face. He nodded and watched as Thomas left the ward.
Xu Xiangbei became curious about this old man named Kalia. Who could earn such respect from Thomas?
The ward was really large; even with Dean Sun leading a group of doctors in, it still felt spacious.
Dean Sun introduced Xu Xiangbei to Kalia: "Mr. Kalia, this is Dr. Xu Xiangbei from Jiangcheng, he’s here to examine you."
Only then did Xu Xiangbei notice that Mr. Kalia’s eyes were amber. Although his expression was weak and slightly cloudy, they were especially deep, containing something special, as if they could see through a person’s thoughts.
Xu Xiangbei didn’t know what to say or whether to find a translator. Kalia smiled amiably and said, "Hello, Dr. Xu. Thank you for examining me. Do I need to lie in bed, or can I sit on the sofa?"
Unexpectedly, this foreign elderly man spoke Huaxia fluently. Even more surprising to Xu Xiangbei was that he didn’t look down on him for being young; his demeanor and tone were particularly courteous.
Xu Xiangbei grinned cheekily, "I’m pretty casual with my examinations. You don’t need to lie in bed; go wherever you want. Mr. Kalia, you speak Huaxia and even with an Earth Sea accent. Have you lived in Huaxia for many years?"
Mr. Kalia sensed Xu Xiangbei was different from the other doctors who acted cautiously around him, afraid of saying the wrong thing. This young doctor was much more easygoing.
This young doctor hardly seemed like a doctor, more like a young man parking cars on the street for him.
With a hint of reminiscence, he said, "Since I was young, around your age, I’ve often come to Huaxia for business, visiting almost every year. Now I’m seventy-five, almost eighty. Don’t you think I’ve spent a long time in Huaxia?"
"It’s indeed a long time, no wonder your Huaxia is so perfect."
Mr. Kalia got off the bed and, taking the cane handed by the burly man and supported by him, struggled towards the sofa.
Just walking those few steps from the inner room to the living room, Mr. Kalia appeared to be in agony, beads of sweat breaking out on his forehead as if exerting all his energy.
Xu Xiangbei sat down beside Mr. Kalia, casually feeling the sofa, noting it was soft, comfortable, and made of high-grade top-grain leather.
He clicked his tongue in wonder: "The sofa is genuine leather. Dean Sun, you have really invested in the hospital. Do all special wards look so luxurious?"
Dean Sun smiled: "There are different levels of special wards, like standard rooms and deluxe suites. There are differences; they aren’t all the same."
After hearing Dean Sun’s explanation, Xu Xiangbei understood a bit more.
Standing behind Dean Sun, Director Zhou looked disdainful, thinking to himself, what a country bumpkin, it’s clear he’s never seen the world. He wondered how Jiangcheng Hospital could have hired him as a consultant. This guy doesn’t look like a miracle doctor at all, more like a hooligan.
Xu Xiangbei saw a pack of foreign cigarettes on the coffee table, feeling curious. He took one out and smiled: "Mr. Kalia, is it okay to smoke here?"
Kalia looked curiously at Xu Xiangbei. He was the first to want to smoke in his hospital room. Kalia smiled kindly, "It’s okay, if you want to smoke, go ahead."
Seeing Xu Xiangbei casually take a cigarette from the patient’s coffee table, Dean Sun and Director Zhou exchanged glances, the contempt in Director Zhou’s eyes grew stronger.
Zhang Xuesong knew Xu Xiangbei had a quirky personality and didn’t find it inappropriate, only thinking smoking in a hospital room wasn’t great.
Lighting the cigarette, Xu Xiangbei smoked while curiously surveying the room, looking less like a doctor here to examine someone and more like a neighbor dropping by for a visit.
Director Zhou saw how Xu Xiangbei had left their group standing there and got angry, not holding back: "Dr. Xu, can you examine the patient? If so, quickly treat Mr. Kalia. Don’t dilly-dally, our time is precious."
Xu Xiangbei ignored Director Zhou, instead grinning and asking Kalia: "Mr. Kalia, do you smoke?"
"I don’t smoke."
Director Zhou continued, "Dr. Xu, if you can’t treat him, just say so. Procrastinating won’t help, please don’t delay our treatment for Mr. Kalia."
Xu Xiangbei, annoyed by Zhou’s glaring, retorted: "Director Zhou, don’t be impatient. As long as the medicine suits the disease, even severe ailments can be quickly cured. But if the medicine doesn’t fit the illness, even daily examinations won’t cure Mr. Kalia."
Director Zhou was infuriated: "What do you mean, are you implying I haven’t treated Mr. Kalia properly? That I didn’t prescribe the right medicine? He has acute myelitis, with left leg atrophy. Without my timely treatment, he’d already be bedridden, his life at risk."
