Chapter 224
Chapter 224
Fern's Perspective
Night had fallen, and the air felt heavy with humidity, making it suffocating and uncomfortable. My heart raced faster than usual, and every step I took felt like it weighed a ton. My grip on the car keys tightened, and my eyes locked on the deserted warehouse ahead. I knew instinctively that nothing was going to be easy tonight, but there was no turning back. I didn't even let myself consider it.
I tightened the collar of my jacket and took a deep breath, feeling a wave of suffocating pressure. Daniel's silhouette kept haunting my thoughts—the one closest to my bloodline, the one child who still didn't know who he truly was. I instinctively knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, I couldn't allow Daniel to be harmed.
The doors to the warehouse were closed, and a disconcerting silence hung in the air. I knew Elena had anticipated my arrival. As I approached the door, I gazed at the faded iron gate, hearing the beat of my own heart echoing in the stillness. I raised my hand and pushed the door open. The heavy iron gate creaked loudly, as if announcing the fate that awaited me.
Stepping into the dimly lit warehouse, my eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness. Despite my caution, I felt no sense of security. Then, I saw the familiar figure—Daniel, tied to a chair. His face was pale, his eyes filled with an unmistakable fear. Though he tried to hold it back, his tense expression pierced my heart.
"Daniel!" I rushed over to him, losing all sense of caution. I ignored the look of warning and concern in Daniel's eyes. All I wanted was to get him out of this nightmare as quickly as possible.
But just as I reached out to release his restraints, a sharp pain stabbed through my back. A tremendous force overwhelmed me, and in an instant, I lost consciousness. I collapsed to the cold ground, my vision blurred and my mind a swirling chaos, as if I were being dragged into an abyss.
When I regained consciousness, my head throbbed painfully, and blurry light filled my vision. I struggled to open my eyes and found myself tied to a chair beside Daniel. His eyes still held the unmistakable look of anxiety and fear. A flicker of relief crossed his face when he saw me regain consciousness, but it quickly gave way to tension. He clearly didn't want to see me caught in such a predicament.
Around us stood several men in black, their cold gazes like machines, emotionless and unwavering. My heart sank. I finally realized who was behind all of this.
"Elena…" I whispered her name, and even though I had a premonition of it, hearing it aloud filled me with a wave of anger and coldness.
Elena, seated not far away, slowly stood and walked toward me with a mocking sneer on her face. My eyes were ice-cold now, no trace of the gentleness and patience that once resided there. Only an endless desire for control and detachment remained.
"Fern, you're finally awake," Elena said, her voice dripping with provocation. "You know, I've been giving you plenty of chances to leave Giovanni's world and save yourself."
My lips tightened as anger surged through me. "I've done what you asked. You got what you wanted," I replied, my voice calm but carrying an unmistakable pain I couldn't hide.
Elena chuckled softly, mockery evident in her expression. "Yes, it pleases me that you left Giovanni. But you know what? It wasn't enough to make you truly leave. You thought that by doing that, you could just walk away, didn't you? Do you really think Giovanni will forget about you and your son?"
Before I could respond, Elena's gaze turned slowly toward Daniel. My heart clenched in alarm, and I whispered urgently, "Don't hurt him! I'll do anything if you let him go!"
"Anything?" Elena quirked her lips, her tone dismissive. "Do you really think you can bargain now? You've betrayed Giovanni. You've lost all leverage."
My eyes widened, and I spoke with a kind of resigned determination, "Let Daniel go, and I'll do anything. I swear."
Elena's laughter grew louder, mocking my desperation. "Is that so? Are you willing to die, then?" Her eyes gleamed with cold malice as she took a step closer.
"I can," I replied without hesitation, my voice steady, no trace of fear in my words—only a quiet resolve.
Elena's smile twisted into something darker as she sneered. "How touching. Motherly love, great sacrifice." Her laughter held a twisted pleasure. "But you two, neither of you will leave here alive today."
She turned and gave an order to the men in black. "Do it."
As the command was given, the men in black began to move toward Daniel and me. My heart pounded violently, and I struggled against my restraints, but I knew it was futile. I was powerless against them.
Though my body felt weak, my eyes locked on Daniel's. His worried gaze met mine, and something inside me hardened. In that moment, I knew without a doubt that I would do whatever it took to protect him—even if it meant giving my life.
Elena's cold eyes were like knives, watching me as if waiting for me to break. But what she didn't realize was that I had already made up my mind. No matter what happened, I would not let myself or my son become pawns in this game of power.
"Do it!" Elena ordered again, her voice as cold as ice.
The men in black slowly advanced, and the air grew thick with tension. In that moment, my heart made a final decision. If this was to be my end, I would fight to the death to protect my son and preserve his last hope.
My mind went blank. I felt the finality of my fate, ready to face death. My body no longer had the strength to struggle, and my heart was filled with resignation. Darkness loomed before my eyes, and Elena's sneering voice echoed around me, her cruel words driving me closer to the edge of despair.
I closed my eyes and braced for the inevitable pain.
