Getting away with the Alpha's Pup

Chapter 222

Chapter 222

Fern's Perspective

A few days passed, and life for Daniel and me gradually stabilized. I found a temporary job, which, although it didn't pay much, was enough for us to cover our basic living expenses. The town's inhabitants were kind, the atmosphere peaceful, and for a while, life didn't fluctuate too much. However, an unsettling worry lingered in the back of my mind—I knew the peace was only temporary and that the real challenge had just begun.

I walked around the town every day, took Daniel for walks, and occasionally visited the nearby market to buy fresh vegetables and fruits. Although Daniel was a bit uncomfortable in this new place at first, he gradually began playing with other children and integrating into town life. Seeing the smile on my child's face lifted my spirits a little. I knew that, even though everything had changed, I would do my best to create a secure future for Daniel.

However, late at night, I often sat alone in front of the window, staring out at the dark sky. I knew Giovanni would never let Daniel and me go easily, especially after learning he had a child. I couldn't predict how he would react, but I knew Giovanni had immense power and resources. He would never allow himself to lose his loved ones, whether out of a desire for control or because of his emotions.

This unease, like a boulder weighing on my heart, could not be removed or escaped. I sometimes wondered what my life would be like now if I hadn't run away, if I hadn't made that decision. Would Giovanni and I be living happily ever after? Would our children be growing up in an intact family? These questions felt like countless thorns digging deep into my heart.

But reality is always so cold. No matter how much I recalled the past or imagined a possible future, the relationship that had been shattered could never be rebuilt. I used to be obsessed with love, but now I held on more for the sake of my children. I wanted to provide Daniel with a stable environment to grow up in.

One Friday afternoon, I took Daniel to the town library. He picked up a children's picture book, flipping through it with a smile. I gently urged him, "Daniel, don't read for too long today. When we get home, you need to rest. Mommy has some work to do."

Daniel nodded and reluctantly put down the book, still excitedly saying, "Mommy, I learned so many new things today! Can we come back next time?"

I smiled and stroked his head. "Sure, we'll come back more often when you're out of school."

"Great!" Daniel bounced happily, his eyes shining with what seemed like an endless love for this town.

But just as we were about to leave the library, my cell phone suddenly rang. I glanced at the caller ID, and my heart skipped a beat—it was a number I didn't recognize.

"Hello," I said, my voice trailing off, a wave of emotion rippling through me.

On the other end, a familiar, calm voice, tinged with indifference, said, "Fern, it's me, Giovanni."

My heart dropped. I felt an overwhelming heaviness settle in. I forced myself to suppress the panic rising in my chest and tried to keep my voice steady. "Giovanni, what's wrong?"

There was a brief silence, as if he were weighing his words, and then he said, "I know you left with the baby, and I'm not going to force you to come back, but there has to be closure between us."

"I know." My voice came out hoarse, and I realized this moment had been inevitable. I never imagined I could hide from Giovanni, who would find me no matter where I was.

"Fern, Daniel is my child." Giovanni's tone grew colder. "You've been hiding this for so long. Did you really think you could keep this secret forever?"

I took a sharp breath and glanced at Daniel, who was happily playing with a puppy by the roadside, completely unaware of the storm brewing around him.

I lowered my head, my voice breaking, "I know he's your child, but what's between you and me can't be changed. I don't want anything more between him and you." I took a deep breath, searching for the strength to hold firm. "He doesn't need you or anything you have in his life."

Giovanni's voice grew low, yet it still carried immense power. "Do you really think this is good for him? Do you think he's better off without his father? Can you guarantee that he won't need me?"

"He needs a peaceful life, not to be dragged down by the past." My voice grew steadier as I spoke, knowing I could never go back to the past and allow Giovanni's shadow to loom over our world.

There was silence on the other end of the line for a moment, and then Giovanni sighed. "You may think you're making the right choice, but I'm not going to let you both disappear."

When the call ended, I clutched the phone tightly, a sharp pain piercing my heart. Giovanni's words were chilling—ominous harbingers of the storm that was about to hit.

Daniel ran up to me, his innocent smile still bright, his earlier excitement unchanged. But all I felt was a deep sense of helplessness. I gently scooped him into my arms and whispered, "Daniel, Mommy promises we'll be okay."

But deep down, I knew the storm was only beginning.
