Getting away with the Alpha's Pup

Chapter 206

Chapter 206

Fern's Perspective

Early in the morning, with the fresh scent of damp earth in the air, I sat at my desk, my fingers resting on the keyboard, my gaze drifting aimlessly. Today's work felt unusually uninteresting, and my mind had already wandered far away. For some reason, I couldn't shake the feeling that something unusual was about to happen.

I couldn't focus at all; my heart beat erratically, as though something was urging me to face it. I glanced at the clock on the wall, and just as I was about to dial my assistant, I heard a sudden voice.

"Miss Diana, Mr. Giovanni would like to see you."

The employee's voice was calm, yet carried an unmistakable tone of finality. At the mention of his name, my heart involuntarily skipped a beat. Giovanni? He wants to see me? The unexpected announcement left me feeling flustered, almost unable to believe it.

Since the party that day, we had barely interacted. It was as if he had vanished from my life, his busy schedule consuming his every moment and pushing my thoughts away from more sensitive matters. But now, he was summoning me, and an inexplicable unease settled deep in my chest, especially when I remembered how close he had come to meeting Daniel at the banquet.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, and stood up to make my way to Giovanni's office. With each step, my heartbeat seemed to race faster, and that growing sense of unease intensified. The sound of my footsteps echoed in the silent hallway, reverberating in my ears like a warning.

When I reached the door to his office, my heart gave a painful lurch. I gently pushed the door open and stepped inside. The moment it clicked shut behind me, I felt as though something heavy was pressing down on my chest.

Giovanni sat behind his desk, his gaze distant, as if lost in thought. When he noticed my entrance, he looked up, and in that instant, my heart skipped. Almost simultaneously, a powerful presence washed over me—cold, oppressive, and unmistakably threatening.

He rose swiftly and walked toward me, giving me no time to react. I turned my gaze away in a panic, trying to appear calm, though the turmoil inside me was impossible to hide. My eyes involuntarily scanned his desk, and then—

My heart lurched, and my breath caught.

On the desk were several photographs. Photos of me and my son, Daniel. They were taken on a quiet afternoon when Daniel was still very small, with me holding him in my arms, a faint smile on my face. It was a private moment, one I had never shared with anyone. But now, here they were, on Giovanni's desk, and I was standing right in front of him.

My anger flared almost immediately, and my voice became sharp and shaky. "You've been spying on me?"

Giovanni didn't respond to my anger. He simply lowered his gaze for a brief moment, then remained silent before raising his head to meet my eyes. "Spying? I wouldn't call it that, Ms. Diana."

A hot surge of rage pulsed through me, clouding my judgment. I understood what he was implying—that I had long since lost any pretense of the person I once was. I bit my lower lip to suppress the tears threatening to spill, then coldly demanded, "What... is the meaning of these pictures? This is my private life, Giovanni."

Giovanni's gaze didn't waver. He continued to study me in silence, as if analyzing every flicker of emotion on my face. "I know you don't approve of my methods," he said, his voice low but firm, with an unmistakable seriousness. "But this is something you and I need to discuss."

I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself, but the waves of turmoil inside me made it impossible to hold myself together. I clenched my teeth and fixed my gaze on him, my voice cold. "I told you, Giovanni, I'm not the Finn you knew. You have no right to interfere in my life."

Giovanni frowned slightly, seemingly offended by my words, but he didn't retort immediately. Instead, he asked again, "You think you're hiding it well, but I felt a connection the night of the banquet. That connection didn't come from you, but it came from someone close to you."

My heart clenched, as if something had tightened around it. My mind went blank at Giovanni's words. Had he already discovered something?

I didn't dare raise my eyes to meet his. I kept my head lowered, doing my best to appear calm. "What are you talking about? I don't know what you mean."

Giovanni wasn't deterred by my flippant words. He took a step closer, closing the gap between us and invading my personal space, making me feel an overwhelming sense of oppression. His voice lowered, almost a command. "You know you can't hide it any longer. How do you explain that peculiar aura surrounding your son? That scent that triggers my wolf's instincts?"

My head was spinning, everything around me starting to blur. I tried to calm myself, forcing back the panic building inside. "Giovanni, Daniel is my son. He has nothing to do with you."

"You think I'm going to believe your lies?" Giovanni sneered, his contempt clear. "You can't even hide your connection to me, let alone the familiar scent of a wolf on your son." He paused, his voice turning colder. "He's my son, isn't he?"

A chill of fear spread down my spine. I wanted to recoil, to escape this situation that was spiraling out of control, but my legs felt frozen, incapable of movement.

I took a deep breath and tried to push down the fear threatening to overtake me. "You're wrong, Giovanni. Daniel has nothing to do with you."

Giovanni's eyes grew colder as he leaned in closer, his voice a whisper. "You can keep lying to yourself, but I'm not going to be fooled by your lies anymore."

My heart began to race, and the world around me seemed to fade into a blur.

I fought back the rising tears and finally spoke. "I'm not lying to you, Giovanni. I don't even know what you're talking about anymore. If, as you say, you felt a special connection, but it came from someone else, then what makes you think it came from my son, Daniel, who you've never even met?"

Giovanni's eyes flickered for a moment but returned to indifference. "Is that so?" He sneered. "And how do you prove that the connection didn't come from your son?"

"I have a way to prove it," I snapped, my voice rising in frustration.

Giovanni watched me closely, his expression unreadable.

"My son, Daniel, he..." I trailed off, and Giovanni stood there, waiting, as if anticipating my next words.

"Because my son, Daniel, he's human," I said softly, the words finally escaping me.
