Chapter 179
Chapter 179
Giovanni's Perspective
I couldn't take my eyes off her. Even in death, her beauty remained, untouched by the cold breath of the end.
Her breathing had ceased, her heartbeat long gone, and those eyes that once sparkled with defiance and tenderness were now closed tightly, like stars that had never truly shone.
Oliver gently lifted her as though she were merely asleep, but I knew this time she would never wake.
In that moment, my world lost all its light.
"Take her." My voice came out hoarse, barely audible. It was my final request to Oliver, the last thing I could do for her.
I could no longer bear to watch, to see her drift farther away into a distance I could never reach.
Oliver said nothing. His silence was heavy with sorrow.
He turned, carrying her, step by slow step. His figure blurred as he moved, and her form grew smaller and smaller until, finally, she vanished from my sight. In that instant, my heart shattered completely.
A suffocating agony crashed over me. It was the Bond breaking—she no longer belonged to me, no longer my mate, no longer tethered to me in any way. Our souls, once intimately entwined, were now violently severed. The invisible chains that had bound her to my heart crumbled, leaving only emptiness and pain behind.
I collapsed to my knees, my fingers clawing at the dirt as if searching for some anchor, some small strength to keep me breathing. But the pain was too vast, like an endless abyss swallowing me whole. I couldn't breathe. Every breath felt like a thousand steel needles piercing my chest, torturing me with each agonizing inhale.
My wolf growled, feral and desperate inside me. It was in more pain than I was, unable to accept the truth any more than I could. We had shared her warmth, whispered our promises into her ear a thousand times, dreamed of a lifetime together. But now she was gone—gone forever.
I could feel the rage burning within it, a fury directed at me. It wanted to break free, to tear through my mind and sanity, to destroy everything in its path, even itself.
The force of the backlash was overwhelming, utterly unstoppable. Without her presence, the balance between me and the wolf shattered instantly. My body ignited in an unrelenting burn, as if every muscle and nerve were being scorched by a fire beyond description. My soul twisted, and my heart felt as though it was gripped by an invisible hand, squeezing with such intensity that I nearly lost consciousness from the pain.
But at the peak of all this agony and devastation, my rage erupted. The loss of her tore away the last thread of my sanity. The guilt and repression I had buried deep within me exploded like a volcano. I threw my head back, a violent motion, and let my fury rise to the sky. The air around me vibrated, and even the ground beneath my feet trembled under the force of my power.
I had never felt so out of control. A massive wave of energy surged through me, and I heard a roar tear from my throat—alien, raw, more like a cry from the wolf within than from myself. It felt as though the heavens and the earth responded to my fury. Trees splintered, rocks tumbled, and the very air seemed to warp around me.
Yet, this power was too much for my body to contain. I could feel my blood boiling inside me, hear the tortured groans of my bones, and sense my skin stretching to the brink of tearing. My vision started to blur as my consciousness wavered.
Still, I didn't stop.
The force surged from me like an inferno, a rage so vast it threatened to set the entire world ablaze. But in the midst of this all-consuming fury, I could feel myself burning up as well. Slowly, my strength began to falter, and every part of me screamed that I couldn't hold out much longer.
At last, my vision went black, and I was swallowed by the endless void. My power dissipated, and I plunged into the abyss along with it.
With one final, heart-wrenching roar, I crumbled to the ground, unable to hold myself up any longer.
"Alpha!" I vaguely heard the horrified voices of Vivian and Tobias.
Then everything fell silent.
The world drifted away from me, the pain fading into the quiet until it disappeared altogether.
My last thought was of her—her smile, her voice, her presence. She was the only light in my life.
But now, that light had gone out.
The darkness finally engulfed me, and I fell into an endless slumber.
The river washed over the rocks, and the cliffs stood jagged and craggy. There were countless places to hide the evidence.
The sun was setting, and it was getting dark, but I was too tired to turn on the lights.
Then, I thought I heard voices from the living quarters.
I got up to check, but froze the moment I entered the room.
In the darkness sat a figure I thought I would never see again. Someone I would recognize instantly, no matter where or when.
Her sweet scent filled the air as she gazed out the window.
I felt my heart stop. Before I realized it, I was standing behind her.
"Fern?" I whispered hoarsely. "You... you're back?"
I reached for her hand, my heart swelling with overwhelming joy and relief.
But there was nothing to grasp.
"Giovanni..."
She turned to face me. Her voice was as sweet and gentle as ever, but her face was pale as paper.
"I've come to say goodbye..."
"What do you mean?" I began to panic, my heart pounding in my ears. "No, not again! Fern, come back!"
Suddenly, she vanished. A roar erupted from my chest. "No—!"
I woke from the chaos, cold air biting into my skin and sinking into my bones. Pain wrapped around every nerve like a viper, and images of that moment flooded my mind uncontrollably—her dagger gleaming coldly in the moonlight, the flash of determination in her eyes, tearing open an unhealable wound in the softest part of my heart.
That final confession, that irrevocable goodbye, haunts me like a nightmare that never ends.
Damn it! How did I fall asleep? How did I fall asleep?
