Chapter 174
Chapter 174
Tobias' Perspective
The night was deep, and moonlight trickled through the gaps in the forest, casting dappled patterns of light onto the shadowy wolf pack base.
I stood atop the towering watchtower, staring into the darkness beyond. The tension in the air was palpable, as if the entire world was holding its breath in anticipation of the coming battle.
The pack's rules had become increasingly stringent. Every member was undergoing intense training, and the harsh discipline made everyone feel as though they were walking on thin ice. I felt my body and mind being pushed to their limits, every moment preparing me for the impending conflict. My gaze involuntarily swept across the training ground, where soldiers practiced weapon swings and tactical maneuvers with machine-like precision, their faces etched with both determination and exhaustion.
The shadow of battle loomed over everyone, and my emotions were even more complex. Only I knew that Giovanni's power as the pack leader was waning. Although I had suggested that he attempt to repair the bond with Fern, I had no real authority over Giovanni's actions.
Tonight, the moonlight was unusually cold, as if it too was heralding impending disaster.
"Come to the command center, Tobias," Giovanni ordered through the mind link.
I descended the watchtower and walked heavily toward the command center. Inside, I found a group of people nervously discussing battle plans. Giovanni sat behind a desk, his eyes fixed intently on the papers in his hands.
Their voices were low and urgent, clearly engaged in final preparations for the imminent battle. As I took my seat, I noticed Vivian conferring with a few members in a corner. Their expressions were grave, suggesting they were discussing something of great importance. I took a deep breath and decided to join their conversation.
"Vivian, what's going on?"
Vivian looked up, her gaze flashing with concern. "Tobias, we've just received intelligence that the Blackmoon Pack's main force has assembled near our border. They plan to attack tomorrow night. Their aim isn't just to strike us but to completely destroy our home."
At that moment, Giovanni stood up and walked over to the conference table, his eyes sweeping the room. He spoke in a deep, commanding voice, "As you all know, the threat from the Blackmoon Pack is growing more imminent. Tonight, we must devise the best plans to ensure the safety of the Pack."
The night grew darker, and the training ground outside the command center remained brightly lit.
Suddenly, I heard the hurried sound of footsteps. I turned to see Vivian entering the command center, her face pale and anxiety evident in her eyes. "Tobias, we've just discovered that the Blackmoon Pack's advance force has entered our territory. They are likely to attack before we're fully prepared."
My heart sank; the news only heightened my sense of unease.
I quickly went to Giovanni's office and reported the latest news to him.
Upon hearing my report, Giovanni took a deep breath and calmly said, "Immediately notify all teams and deploy the defense line. We must prepare for the worst but also do everything possible to buy time."
I nodded and prepared to leave to carry out the order.
"Wait," Giovanni suddenly called out to stop me.
"What else do you need me to do, Alpha?" I asked.
I watched as Giovanni, the strikingly tall man, walked over to the window. His gaze seemed to linger on a distant point before he turned back to me and said, "I need you to get her out of here."
"What?"
My eyes widened in shock. I could hardly believe what I was hearing.
"Are you serious?" For the first time, I couldn't help but question my Alpha, my best friend, Giovanni. "At a time like this, you're thinking about your damned love? You want me to send her away? Have you forgotten that your power is already weakening? Sending her away now could be disastrous for our pack!"
"I know!" Giovanni growled, clearly enraged by my challenge. "Look, I haven't forgotten my responsibilities. I understand your concerns, but I can assure you, none of that will happen! Now, all you need to do is follow the orders!"
Giovanni's intimidating presence silenced me, but I still watched him warily.
Time passed as we faced off. Finally, I turned away, resigning myself to follow Giovanni's orders.
Standing in the shadowy hallway, the faint light illuminated my face. My fingers lightly brushed the cold stone walls, feeling their chill.
"How am I going to handle this mission?" I muttered to myself.
The clan was in grave danger, and I had been sent to find Fern because Giovanni wanted her taken to a safe place.
My heart was a whirl of conflicting emotions as I thought about Giovanni's weakening power and the looming war. Honestly, I wasn't sure if taking Fern away was the right move, but I had no choice.
I looked up and arrived at Fern's room.
I raised my hand and knocked on the door, my feelings in turmoil.
The door opened quickly to reveal Fern's pale face, though her eyes were resolute.
"Alpha sent me to get you out of here," I said calmly, though I was anything but inside. "We need to leave immediately and find a safe place to take refuge for a while."
Fern regarded me with a flicker of skepticism. She glanced at her wrist as if weighing whether to trust me, then nodded slowly and said softly, "Okay, I'll go with you."
My mind let out a sigh of relief as I turned and led Fern out of the hallway and into a darkened room where a hidden door was tucked away. I knew this path was a shortcut to a safe place, and we had to be cautious not to be discovered.
Despite this, a sense of unease gnawed at me. I had a vague feeling that things were not as straightforward as they seemed.
As we walked, a figure suddenly sprang out from the shadows. I barely had time to react before Fern's brother, Oliver, appeared in front of him.
"Looks like I'm just in time," Oliver whispered, a cold determination in his eyes. "You shouldn't trust Tobias. He's just a pawn; his true purpose isn't to protect you."
Fern shuddered slightly at his words. She turned to me, her gaze filled with skepticism and unease. I could feel the shift in her demeanor.
"Fern, I know you have doubts about me, but please believe me when I say my mission is to protect you," I said, trying to sound sincere. "Giovanni told me to get you out of here as soon as possible. The danger has become unpredictable."
"Is that so?" Fern snapped. "But this path doesn't lead to an exit, does it?"
I looked at Fern in shock as she and Oliver exchanged knowing smiles.
Realization dawned on me, and I gave up trying to deny it. "You're right," I admitted. "This isn't an exit. Alpha instructed me to take you to a safe place, and I should have followed his orders. But for the sake of the pack, I can't do that. You do realize, Fern, that Giovanni's power is weakening. If you, as Luna, leave the pack now, then…"
I didn't finish my sentence, but I'm sure we all understood the gravity of my unfinished words.
Fern, however, seemed to lose faith in my words. She looked to Oliver, who stepped forward and whispered to her, "We're ready. Come with me, and I'll make sure you're safe."
A sense of powerlessness washed over me as I watched Fern and Oliver quickly vanish into the shadows.
"This is getting out of hand," I cursed inwardly.
