Chapter 169
Chapter 169
Fern's Perspective
At midnight, moonlight from the forest spilled over my bed through a gap in the curtains. The room was silent except for the steady ticking of the ancient clock on the wall. I rolled over, trying to fall asleep, but the events of last night kept replaying in my mind.
Suddenly, there was a faint rattle from the balcony. My senses sharpened, and I turned to the window. The window door was soon pushed open gently, and a tall figure appeared.
It was Oliver, his deep eyes glinting in the dim light.
"Still awake?" His voice was low, tinged with concern.
"I couldn't sleep," I replied softly, sitting up. Internally, I felt a vague unease. "How did you get here? Aren't there any guards outside?"
"I avoided them," Oliver said casually.
I frowned, sensing that something was amiss. With all that had happened to the pack recently, it made sense that the patrols would be stricter.
"What's wrong?" Oliver asked, noticing my frown and the silence.
I shook my head, trying to push aside my unease. "Come in. There's something I need to tell you."
Oliver closed the door, walked over to my bed, and sat down. His face looked a little haggard in the moonlight, clearly burdened with his own concerns.
"What is it?" he asked softly.
I took a deep breath and tried to steady myself. "Last night, I overheard something. About Aurora and Silas."
Oliver's brow furrowed at the mention of their names. "What happened?"
"I saw Aurora sneaking out last night. I followed her and found her meeting quietly with Silas. I overheard their conversation—they were plotting something." I paused, organizing my thoughts. "They mentioned a plan targeting the Dark Howl Pack and Giovanni."
Oliver remained silent for a moment, urging me to continue with a nod.
"Silas is Aurora's former secret lover, the one she left with together after betraying Giovanni. Now they've resurfaced with a more sinister plan. I couldn't catch all the details, but I could tell it's extremely dangerous." I tried to recall every word I heard last night. "Silas and his father seem to be plotting to attack and take over the Dark Howl Pack. And Aurora—she seems to be the mole."
Oliver's expression grew graver. "Are you sure?"
"I can hardly believe it myself, but I heard it with my own ears," I said, meeting his gaze with determination.
"In that case, the Dark Howl Pack is in for a big battle soon," Oliver said, but his concern was evident. "It's too dangerous for you to stay here. You need to leave with me as soon as possible."
I frowned, unable to respond immediately.
Noticing my hesitation, Oliver said nervously, "Fern, you still want to leave Giovanni, right? Don't tell me you're actually in love with that asshole."
I shook my head. "No, I'm going to get out of here. It's just…"
I glanced at Oliver, gently placing his hand on my belly. "It's just that I have more important things to think about."
As Oliver's hand rested on my belly, his shock and joy became evident. "Oh my God, Fern, is this true? Am I going to be an uncle?"
I nodded.
"So what do you want to do?" Oliver asked, his happiness shining through. "With this little one, are you still set on leaving?"
I understood Oliver's concern well.
Giovanni's cold words from that day echoed in my mind: "Find a way to let her go in peace."
"Of course, I have to leave. But for the sake of this little one and to avoid any unnecessary trouble later, we need to make a detailed plan."
Oliver pondered for a moment, then nodded. "Okay, you're right. So, what's your plan?"
"Before that, we need to find out what Aurora and Silas are up to. Maybe we can use this to our advantage."
"You mean..." Oliver said, his eyes widening in disbelief.
I nodded.
"Then are there any more clues about what you heard last night?" Oliver asked.
I tried to recall everything from last night and shared with Oliver all I had seen and known.
Oliver nodded. "Got it. I'll start the operation first thing in the morning. But for now, you need to rest. We both need to stay sharp."
He stood up and gently stroked my hair. "Don't worry, we'll find a solution," he said, his tone carrying a comforting, older-brotherly warmth.
I managed a weak smile and nodded. Despite the lingering unease, having Oliver by my side offered a slight sense of comfort.
Oliver then prepared to leave.
Just then, the door burst open, slamming against the wall with a loud thud.
The room's air seemed to freeze instantly, and my heart tightened as I looked toward the door.
Giovanni stood in the doorway, exuding an austere presence. The light behind him cast deep shadows, making him appear even more imposing.
Behind him, a group of solemn-faced guards followed. Not far behind Giovanni, Aurora trailed closely, a smug look in her eyes.
For a moment, it felt as though my heart was gripped by an invisible hand, and I could barely breathe. I suddenly understood why the guards had been so lax tonight and how Oliver had managed to evade the patrols to come to my room.
It was a trap.
