Chapter 139
Chapter 139
Fern's Perspective
The moon hung high in the sky, and its bright light cascaded like mercury into every corner of the forest. Tonight was a full moon, and the entire wolf pack was in a state of exuberance, eagerly anticipating the grand full moon banquet.
The bonfire blazed in the clearing, its light reflecting on every excited face. Laughter echoed in the air, and it seemed that even the night wind carried a hint of joy.
The large formal dining room was decorated in red, black, and gold. A band played soft music in the background, and at the other end of the room, a beautiful fireplace made the whole space warm and inviting. The room was already packed with guests—men in suits and women in evening gowns—scattered around, socializing in small groups.
The waiters were busy setting delicate plates of food on the tables. I couldn't stop taking it all in. In all the dinner parties I remembered, I was the one busy serving the guests, never having the leisure to actually enjoy the event.
"Alpha," Tobias said as he led me directly to Giovanni.
Giovanni's blue eyes locked onto me. For a moment, I saw surprise in them along with a dark desire that made me blush slightly.
"Alpha..." I said softly.
"Hey, Alpha Giovanni, she looks really cute," said Silas. Beside him stood a middle-aged man who seemed to be his father, Alpha Galen. They smiled as they approached. "Absolutely stunning. For the party tonight, may I have the honor of inviting this beautiful lady to dance with me?"
Earlier in the day, I had heard from Tobias that we had a visitor.
Despite his complimentary words, I felt very uncomfortable around him.
"Join us," Giovanni said, holding out his hand. "Come on, let's go get something to eat."
I glanced at Giovanni and noticed the displeasure and possessiveness in his eyes.
I could feel his beast wanting to be unleashed, eager to tear the nuisance in front of him to pieces. His bright purple eyes darkened to an onyx color. He was about to lose his cool. That’s when I brought my hand to his clenched fist.
I mouthed the word "calm" as his onyx-colored eyes met my black ones. Then I began stroking his fist with my thumb, soothing him and his animal.
The seating was freely arranged. I followed Giovanni as he pulled out the chair for me. As I took my seat, I realized he had asked me to sit near the head of the table, next to him. My gaze fell. I placed my hands in my lap and waited for the others to take their places.
Tobias took a seat on the other side of me.
"Alpha Giovanni, thank you again for your hospitality. We have enjoyed our stay here immensely. I look forward to working with you." Alpha Galen raised his glass. "Cheers."
"My pleasure," Giovanni replied, nodding.
I watched as Silas' gaze turned to me. "I'm glad you could join us, Ms. Aurora."
Silas' words seemed polite, but I couldn't shake the uneasy feeling he gave me, especially when he called me Aurora.
I caught a hint of teasing in his eyes, as if he was mocking me, but I wondered if I was overthinking it.
As we settled in and the food began to be served, I began to feel trapped in a social situation where I didn’t belong.
"I have to admit, Giovanni, your pack is lovely," Alpha Galen said after a moment of silence.
"Thank you. I've been trying to keep up with the times," Giovanni replied.
But amidst all this merriment, I couldn't contain the annoyance in my mind, especially with Silas' nasty, seemingly all-seeing gaze lingering on me from time to time. It made me even more uneasy, as if my secret had been discovered.
I quietly slipped out of the banquet and returned to my room.
The night was growing colder as I sat on the windowsill, looking out at the moon hanging overhead.
The bonfire was still burning in the forest in the distance, and I could feel a cheerful energy surging through the air. A gust of wind seeped through the seams of my silk pajamas, and I felt the sensation of feathers brushing against my skin, a tingle traveling through my body like an electric current.
Even though we had just met, I still felt a pang thinking about Giovanni's face. I hoped it was all just a dream, but I'd dwelled on thoughts of him for so long that I was hesitant to let them go.
I leaned my head against my knees and stared into the flickering candlelight.
I could almost see Giovanni's well-defined muscles, hear the rustle of his clothes as he undressed, and feel the chortle of pleasure he let out when he admired his body in the mirror. My cheeks grew hot, and with no footsteps outside the door, I poured myself a glass of water to soothe my nerves.
As I gently touched the blanket with my toes, a thought came to me: I longed to be with Giovanni.
I had to admit that Giovanni's tenderness was overwhelming. Since the day he decided to call me "Little Tree," my heart had surrendered to him.
I missed him so much—his broad, firm chest, his heavy breathing, and his rough touch. I took a sip of water, but the cold liquid did nothing to quell the heat inside me.
Just then, I heard footsteps at the door. I turned around nervously, knowing he was already on his way. The door opened, and Giovanni walked in. I felt his gaze lock on my back, making my heart race and my body tense as the air in the room seemed to gather around me. I slowly turned and met Giovanni's gentle eyes.
"I apologize for making you feel bad. Little Tree, have you ever seen the Dark Howl Pack at night? Let's go for a walk," he suggested, his voice low, while observing my pale skin in the moonlight.
"What?" I was surprised.
As Giovanni's mate, I could certainly tell that he cared about me. I knew he was wondering why I was bored, but I couldn't explain it.
I couldn't tell him that my boredom and sadness stemmed from the deal I had made with the moon goddess and the fact that I knew in my heart it was all a lie. But I finally nodded.
We changed our clothes and headed for the forest, the home base of the Dark Howl Pack, with an occasional wolf howl ringing around us. We walked side by side, the moon casting a bright light over Giovanni's tall figure.
He was gentle with me in a way I had never seen before, at least since he brought me here to the Dark Howl Pack. It made my face slowly turn red.
The scent of flowers from the forest and Giovanni's body filled the air, creating a dreamy atmosphere that enveloped everything around me. I felt hazy and lost in the moment, greedily inhaling the scents.
