Chapter 134
Chapter 134
Fern's Perspective
The night hung like an invisible curtain, shrouding the forest in mysterious darkness. Moonlight spilled through the gaps in the treetops, casting dappled light and shadows on the wet ground. My heartbeat reverberated clearly in the silent night, and my hands trembled slightly.
At that moment, I was delving deep into Giovanni's consciousness, trying to find him in this chaotic inner world.
"Giovanni, I'm here," I called out. My voice echoed in the darkness, like a distant call.
Suddenly, a soft moan broke the silence, and I followed the sound. The sight that greeted me froze me in my tracks - a lone figure huddled beside a rock in an empty wasteland, his back appearing particularly forlorn.
His body seemed to be wracked with endless pain and exhaustion, his hair draped over his shoulders, reflecting his fragility and helplessness.
As I approached, I witnessed a scene that broke my heart. A small boy huddled under a dead tree, his back lonely and still. Almost instantly, I recognized the tiny figure as none other than the gentle older brother I remembered, Giovanni.
His shoulders were shaking slightly, as if he were suffering from great sorrow.
"Giovanni?" I called softly, walking towards him with gentle steps.
At the sound of my voice, little Giovanni raised his head. That once gentle face was now marked with traces of grief. His eyes were vacant, as if he were immersed in endless pain and memories. I squatted in front of him and tried to take his hand, but found it as cold as stone, devoid of warmth.
Giovanni heard a voice and looked up sharply, alarm and pain in his eyes. A flicker of mixed emotions crossed his face when he recognized me.
"Why are you here?" His voice was raspy and low, filled with undisguised sadness.
I stepped forward, knelt down, and gently took his hand. "Giovanni, I've come to take you home. We shouldn't be lost here."
However, little Giovanni slowly shook his head, the pain in his eyes deepening. "Home? Where is my home? I've been homeless for a long time."
I felt a stabbing pain in my heart and tried to comfort him. "Giovanni, it's not like that. You still have me, you still have us..."
Giovanni interrupted me, his voice filled with accusation and despair. "You know what? When I was a child, my pack was attacked, and my parents died in front of me. I was forced to become a Rogue and drifted around. Your parents adopted me, and I thought I had finally found something to fall back on, but then they kicked me out of the pack just because we were fated mates. They couldn't accept the fact that we were together."
It pained me to the core to hear that he remembered the bloody attack, when Giovanni's young face was filled with fear and helplessness. My parents took him home and provided warmth and shelter, yet fate made it fragile.
"Giovanni, I…" I choked out, trying to justify myself but finding no words.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I faced the tiny, anguished Giovanni, and my heart ached as I looked at the young Giovanni. "I'm sorry, Giovanni. I didn't realize you had endured so much."
A bitter smile appeared on young Giovanni's face as he continued, "The moment I knew you were my destiny, I swore to guard you for life. But when I was kicked out of the pack by your parents, you did nothing and didn't even show up. You abandoned me too, didn't you?"
I shook my head, tears sliding down my cheeks. "No, Giovanni, I didn't know that at the time. I always thought you left because you had your own choices."
Young Giovanni's eyes grew darker as he whispered, "And now, even Aurora has betrayed me. You must feel so satisfied, seeing me so miserable. Fate is full of malice towards me, and I am destined to always be a Rogue who will not be loved and abandoned by fate."
"I…" I held young Giovanni's hand tightly, trying to convey all the apologies and love I could. "I'm sorry, Giovanni, I'm truly sorry."
Giovanni's eyes flickered for a second but were quickly filled with despair. He stood up and turned his back to me, his voice trembling, "I don't need sympathy; I just don't want to continue being teased by fate. I've grown accustomed to being alone, struggling alone. Anyway, no one loves me."
My heart felt as though it had been pierced by a sharp sword. I took a deep breath, walked up, and gently hugged young Giovanni. "I know I didn't stand up for myself back then, didn't even bother to ask you a question, and I couldn't do anything about it when I saw you being kicked out of the pack."
Crouching down in front of Giovanni, I took his hand and felt the coldness of his fingertips. "But now you're not alone, Giovanni. I'm here, and I'm willing to walk with you through this wilderness, through every dark corner."
Giovanni's body shuddered, and his originally stiff posture gradually relaxed. A hint of hesitation and hope flashed in his eyes, but it was quickly overshadowed by deep despair. "But can you promise you'll never leave me again?"
I hesitated for a split second, understanding what this vow meant in my heart. And as werewolves, we can never betray our oaths.
Facing young Giovanni's expectant gaze, I nodded, my eyes firm and sincere. "I promise, no matter what happens, I will never leave you."
Giovanni fell silent for a moment, then he sighed deeply and slowly stood up.
"Let's go home, Giovanni," I said softly.
Giovanni nodded and gave a long overdue smile. "Okay, let's go home."
With Giovanni's firm response, the darkness around us receded, replaced by a soft glow. I felt myself slowly withdrawing from Giovanni's inner world as consciousness returned to reality. Opening my eyes, I saw Giovanni breathing steadily on the bed.
