Chapter 185 : What Is OT to a Black Company? (2)

What Is OT to a Black Company? (2)

As befitted a composite game streamer, Genome had played a wide variety of games. Among them, "Dead by Exorcist" was a title he had enjoyed often since its release—and still played from time to time.

"Sss, why do I feel so uneasy?"

Even while decoding the barrier, Genome was scanning his surroundings every chance he got.

― Are you scared, dude?

― A seasoned player getting spooked by a newbie!?

― Hyung? Is your playtime just for show?

― It's still early on, what's so scary, lol

At the viewers' teasing, he muttered quietly.

"No, if it were anyone else, I wouldn't bother with the barrier and would just start toying with them. But it's the boss!"

-lol that's so Matjji

― Newbie (Purple)

― Ah! I'm so scared!

― Hyung? Don't you even know what we want to see?

― Ah lol hurry up and get caught in an embarrassing way

― If it's occult, isn't it busy setting traps right now anyway?

Looking at chat, Genome refocused on breaking the barrier. In his experience, things usually kicked off properly once at least one barrier was removed.

However, that assumption only applied under normal circumstances.

["Skullkim" has been sealed.]

With a deep sound effect, a system message appeared before his eyes.

At the same time, just like the exorcist's vision, the location of the sealing array was revealed through obstacles.

"Eh?"

-?

― Already sealed, really?

-omg wtf

― King Genome's got the god hand right off the bat, lol

― Didn't Golcho move with him?

Both Genome and the viewers all sported question marks in their minds. But unlike the viewers, Genome didn't just stop at being surprised.

"Ha, kids these days only pick up the bad stuff."

His remark directed viewers' attention to him. As question marks filled the chat, he clicked his tongue and continued.

"You can't let yourself get caught on purpose, just to be nice. I mean, you know what kind of person our boss is, right? He can tell if it's real or an act. If you try too hard to read the situation, it actually backfires, backfires."

― Gene-logic ON!

― He's losing it, lol

― Isn't that basically Genome's story?

― Hyung? If you can't even do fake banter right, you won't survive at the company!

When the viewers tried to tease him, Genome snorted.

"C'mon. You guys say that even after seeing this skin? If you know the unlock conditions, you wouldn't be talking like that."

― Tbh, the Black Reaper skin is legit

― Seriously, who can do 5,000 successful possessions in a season?

― You didn't aim for that, you just got it by being toxic, right?

― Isn't being extra toxic the whole point?

The "Black Reaper" skin Genome wore was proof of his mastery of the Earthbound Spirit's checking ability, "Foldergeist."

Any veteran player practically had to have this skin.

"Just you watch, I'll go save Skullkim. I'll show you how Dead by Exorcist is really played."

Right as Genome proudly declared this while finishing the barrier—

["Bakjapcho" has been sealed.]

A new system message flashed on screen.

"What...?"

His eyes widened in disbelief.

How long had it been since Skullkim was caught, and now Bakjapcho too?

"What is this? Are they actually just letting themselves get caught?"

He was genuinely flustered, because he knew both were actually skilled at the game.

He thought Skullkim getting caught was just lucky, but if Bakjapcho got caught as well, something else was going on.

― What was that Golcho insta-down

― He's already perfectly "adapted"—that's what I'm saying!

― Hyung? You're saving both, right?

― Ah lol just go save them already

― Surely you're not going to embarrass yourself by backing out, right?

-???: "I'll show you how it's done." (Actually said)

The viewers pounced to tease him further. Genome replied with feigned seriousness.

"I told you, I'll save them. But let's just watch the situation. Can't do anything until the boss goes somewhere else, right?"

He gauged the positions where the two had been caught and stepped out.

"First, I'll need to meet up with Deputy. He's good at the physical stuff, so if he can lure the boss, that'd be nice..."

Going alone was too risky. Attempting a rescue alongside Eclipse was the smarter plan.

-2525, are you throwing your senior under the bus now?!

-???: If only Deputy wasn't there, I'd be the next to get promoted!

― Lol this whole scene, lol

-???: Did you really trust him? Get Genome-kicked!

― Rapid-fire betrayal!

"Come on, it's not betrayal. I just break seals faster, that's all!"

Genome defensively explained as he set his sights on the 1st floor's barrier room—Eclipse's original objective.

"Haaa, what can I say? Deputy will understand, I'm sure."

As he grumbled and headed down the stairs—

["Eclipse" has been sealed.]

He stopped dead in his tracks at the third system message.

"... Huh?"

-?

― What is this? A group act for the boss?

― If I'd known, I would've watched the Godple channel!

― Why is he so good from the start!

Amid Genome and the viewers' confusion, new viewers arrived.

― Came to watch the last sacrifice, ^^

― The last hope of escape (lol)

― Even Eclipse got insta-caught, so will Genome follow next?

― Seeing people getting caught is the funniest part, lol

Eclipse's viewers had jumped over to Genome's channel after their streamer had been sealed.

― What happened? Why did Eclipse get caught?

― Got greedy trying to save Golcho and got wrecked, lol

― What's wild is Eclipse actually backed up, but there was a trap!

― Prediction sense was nuts!

Apparently, Eclipse tried an immediate rescue, and got caught in the process.

― Didn't overthink it and just acted—unlike a certain someone

― The model of chivalry...!

― He's a boomer, but cares for interns more than anyone else, our Deputy ㅠㅠ

The viewers admired Eclipse's valiant effort—but only briefly.

― Ah lol, now it's time for the real player to step out

― For real, the stage is all yours now

― Hyung! Now you're going to save everyone and be Matjji, right?

― Time for Genome's redemption!

― Who said it? Who made the embarrassing sound?

― These Genome fans, always egging him on

― Student, don't you understand the situation? (knife meme)

― All viewers now pray for Genome's success^^

They teasingly cheered him on. In response, he spoke with determination.

"Right, for the sake of the Staff Team's win, it's time for me to step up!"

Genome started to run—but not in the direction the viewers expected.

The other Earthbound Spirits were sealed on the 2nd floor, but he went instead downward.

-???

― Not that way, dude?

-lol straight to the basement?

― Instant sneaky escape, lol

― Said he'd step up—meant step out of the mansion, lol

-???: "Time for me (alone) to step up!"

― How does he never hesitate for even a second?

― Because that's just how Gnome is (nod)

There was a so-called "sneaky exit" that only opened when an Earthbound Spirit was left alone.

That location was the mansion's basement.

"This isn't embarrassing, it's just the best option! No one's been sealed separately—they all got caught together."

Genome answered the viewers' teasing with confidence.

― Bundled together?

― Confucius!

― Get that local-only joke outta here!

― I'll survive by myself

― So betrayal is the only path to victory?

― How to survive in a Black Company: note to self...

― If you want to win, this is the way, lol

― Dead serious, even if it's embarrassing, as long as you win!

― Ah lol, whatever happened to "team building" you talked about at the start!

― The other three will probably get close excluding Genome, lol

Even the viewers admitted it.

Using the emergency exit currently gave him the highest chance of winning.

* * *

Lee Gyeongbok cocked his head slightly.

'Is he really not going to attempt a rescue?'

Through his divine energy, Lee Gyeongbok could sense Genome's position and movements precisely. But those actions had nothing to do with rescuing anyone.

'The basement?'

And in that basement, he detected something odd—a new structure that hadn't existed before.

'Something else down there, huh.'

Smiling faintly, Lee Gyeongbok moved without hesitation. As he slid smoothly down the stairs, viewers wondered aloud—

-???

― Where is he going?

― That's toward the basement, right?

― Huh? Did he know about the sneaky exit?

― What, lol, first time playing Godple!

― How's he heading for the basement right away?

― Oh? True?

Moving on without pause, Lee Gyeongbok answered the curiosity.

"Looks like there's a sneaky exit in the basement. No wonder Mr. Ji wasn't doing anything in response."

This prompted more question marks in chat. What did doing nothing have to do with anything?

"To rescue the other staff members, he'd have to lure me first, right? Best way is to try breaking another barrier, but he didn't touch anything."

After arriving on the first floor, he sprinted toward the entrance across from the central hall.

"I was watching the 2nd floor corridor, and had traps set at the stairways for both the 3rd and 1st floors. He didn't deactivate those either? So I figured, maybe he's taking a roundabout route somewhere else. Must be the sneaky exit."

-lol that does make sense

― True, you save Godple first!

― Oh? So the traps on 3F and 1F were to check the route?

― He processed all of that instantly?!

― Truly the "PerG-physical" owner, lol

-lol sneaky exit isn't secret passage, it's emergency escape

― Genome instantly decided to make a break for it, right?

At their admiration, Lee Gyeongbok smiled warmly and flung open the basement entrance.

Old wooden stairs, black brick walls, and shelves crammed with boxes and supplies for storage appeared before him.

And beyond that—

"Mr. Ji, you still need to clock out, you know?"

He spotted Genome crouched on the floor, fiddling.

― Ah lol, gotta respect the attendance system

― Black Company clock-out = start of overtime

― Clock out = no OT pay

― Ah lol, if you still have work, clock out first then finish it

― True, if you get recorded for overtime, the labor office will catch on!

― Why do the Troopers know this so well, lol

Viewers were satisfied, but the person involved was not.

"Urk!"

Genome jerked around in shock.

He was in the middle of unlocking the basement's emergency hatch that led toward the sewers.

"Boss!? H-how did you—?!"

― A face like he's seen a ghost, lol

― But he IS the Earthbound Spirit!

― Pure panic, lol

― I'd be freaked out too, honestly, lol

― This is hilarious, for real, lol

Genome sprang up in alarm.

Now that Lee Gyeongbok had arrived, there was almost no way he'd open the emergency exit in time.

'There's still a chance, though!'

Genome's eyes darted.

The basement was a prime spot for the Earthbound Spirit's checking skill, foldergeist—the so-called "innate zone."

'Even if my reflexes lose out, my mind games won't.'

Multiple shelves stood between Lee Gyeongbok and Genome. If he tried to approach, Genome could drop objects on him with Foldergeist.

'Just need to hit once!'

In "Dead by Exorcist," just one hit from those objects would stun the exorcist. During that, he could escape, maybe even rescue the others.

'A full reversal might be possible!'

Genome watched Lee Gyeongbok closely, on edge. Seemingly intent on blocking a retreat, Lee Gyeongbok laid a trap, then weaved between shelves toward him.

'Gyeongbok's a newbie after all.'

Genome suppressed a cheer.

Traps were meaningless in the innate zone. If the exorcist was stunned, you could just walk right by.

'Now!'

He confidently stretched out his hand toward the rushing Lee Gyeongbok.

Objects tumbled from a shaking shelf, crashing down on Lee Gyeongbok. Certain of success, Genome charged to meet him.

"Huh?"

But he let out a baffled gasp.

Clang—one after another, metallic noises sounded as all the falling objects were deflected, tumbling off to the side.

-?

― Insane lol

― He blocked all of that?

-(Kemalcon)(Kemalcon)(Kemalcon)

Lee Gyeongbok was standing right in front of him, unharmed. He smiled lightly and said,

"Knew there'd be some kind of trick. So right was the answer."

At that, the viewers caught on.

― Insane, he set up the trap on purpose

― Yup, put the trap on the left, to block the route

― He went right to use his dagger?

― This is wild, crazy

― Genome's so shocked, thought he was all hyped and then just froze, lol

It had all gone according to Lee Gyeongbok's plan. Raising his dagger, he spoke.

"Mr. Ji, you weren't seriously trying to clock out alone, were you?"

-lol, failed to clock out!

― Ah lol, would you really clock out while others are still working?

― Boss has to clock out before you can leave, you know

― Can't pay you OT if you clock out, lol

Genome retorted with exasperation.

"No way! Who even plays like this?!"

Swinging the dagger, Lee Gyeongbok replied lightly,

"Right here."

In the end, all Earthbound Spirits were sealed, and the game ended in Lee Gyeongbok's victory.

Back in the lobby, no one could hide their admiration.

"Seriously, the boss is on a different level."

"Who would've thought it was his first time playing Dead by Exorcist?"

"He really is my lord."

"Ah... should've set up for the basement from the start."

The chat burst into laughter. But their joy wasn't over yet.

― Hurry up and settle the points!

― No one missed out on Purple Coins, right?

― Point duplication ON!

― As if there was ever gonna be an upset, lol

It was time to reveal the results of the pre-game point betting.

With a smile, Lee Gyeongbok operated the interface.

[The winner of the first orientation is?]

[1. Exorcist (98.7%)]

[2. Earthbound Spirit (1.3%)]

The displayed results had everyone laughing.

― Insane, more than 1% even bet on the underdogs?

― People with the hearts of beasts, wow

-lol, seems like the Payout Manipulation Squad was at work

― I'm cashing out thanks to you!

The winners couldn't contain their delight. Unexpectedly, some winners included Skullkim and Bakjapcho themselves.

As the two celebrated, viewers were puzzled, before realization dawned.

-lol even the interns were betting!

― Betting on the opposing team, are you for real?

― Ah haha, this is what you call pampering the boss

― These guys know how to survive in society

― Top-tier variety skill, lol

They had bet on Lee Gyeongbok's victory as well.

"Come on, is this work or a joke?!"

Genome suddenly raised his voice, catching viewers off guard.

"Our company revolves around the boss, and that's the level of belief you had in him?!"

As he continued, chat exploded.

― Wow, what's this?

-lol Genome, you bet 50k points on the Exorcist?

― Dude, why bet against your own team!

― Is this the difference between interns and permanent employment?

― Lol, planning betrayal from the very start!

― Surviving in a Black Company is way too hard!

Before betting closed, Genome had participated as well—purely for entertainment value of course.

"Vibes are great. Let's move on to the next game right away."

Lee Gyeongbok happily kicked off another round.

* * *

Several more games went by.

But the PerG-Day Five could no longer enjoy themselves like before.

There was one reason for this.

'... Time's not passing nearly as slowly as I expected, is it?'

Each round was much shorter than expected. Because Lee Gyeongbok's exorcist skills were so strong, there was still a lot of streaming time left.

'If I go easy, it isn't any fun, though.'

Lee Gyeongbok realized this and considered going easy, but that killed the mood. So he played seriously, and became increasingly proficient with the exorcist through constant gameplay.

― Looks like Godple's fully adapted now, lol

― Seriously, it's a straight speedrun meta now

― Never seen more than two barriers broken in a round, lol

― From the Earthbound Spirits' perspective, it's just a beatdown, lol

― If you watch the non-Godple streams, it's so intense

The time per round kept shrinking. The viewers were still having fun for now, but it was clear that wouldn't last.

"Ahem, everyone?"

Lee Gyeongbok decided to revise the plan and spoke up. Both viewers and the other team members focused on him.

"It's great to encourage teamwork among employees, but if it's always senior staff versus regular staff, the shareholders might get the wrong idea and think there's internal strife."

Genome's eyes sparkled.

"I was thinking it might be better for the execs and regulars to mingle more, too. Honestly, putting all the villain roles on the boss didn't sit right."

He quickly caught Lee Gyeongbok's drift, then glanced around at the others.

"So, who should fill in for the boss's spot next, folks?"

Wherever he looked, he met everyone's gaze—they were all looking at him.

Genome exaggeratedly avoided their eyes.

― Lol, you know you're up, don't pretend

― Even a savvy guy like you can't feign ignorance here, right?

― Come on, they wouldn't put the villain role on the actual seniors, right?

― Duh, what would an intern know about being the villain?

― Biting his lip and dodging looks, so funny, lol

The viewers cracked up, and even Lee Gyeongbok smiled.

"Mr. Ji?"

"Yes? Ah, well... Sure, I'll do it."

"There's no one with company loyalty quite like you, Mr. Ji."

And so, Lee Gyeongbok and Genome swapped roles. The viewers voiced their satisfaction.

― Corporate Spy OUT!

― Chu-nome's ousted, is this good news?

― Ah lol Earthbound Spirit's got a clear win lined up, right?

― Time for Genome's comeuppance!

― Look at all those karma stacks popping!

Seeing their chance, the chat started teasing Genome even harder.

"Hey, I'm good at exorcist, okay?!"

― There anything you can't say, lol

― I'm good at it!"

This is the real comedy, lol

― About to get teabagged as the exorcist

― Bullying ON!

-???: Games aren't about winning. They're about making the other guy mad.

― Selfish bastard, lolol

― Really creeping in like wet concrete, lol

Genome added one last word to the jeering.

"You want to see me play for real? I'm all-in on myself for this bet?!"

The idea of Genome betting on himself only fired up the viewers even more.

― Please do it ㅠㅠㅠ

― Ah lol, today's a payout day

― No fool rides the Genome coin? (there really isn't)

― Don't be fooled! It's a scam coin!

― It's a point party!

Genome amped up the energy again, and Lee Gyeongbok clapped his hands to get everyone's attention.

"Alright, let's get started."

Lee Gyeongbok and the other Earthbound Spirits readied up. A beat later, Genome picked his character and the round began.

-?

-lol, he's picking the DLC character

― Wow, immediately going full embarrassment, huh

― He's really going all-in, isn't he, lol

― Using a collab character just to be sociable?

The character he chose was a top-tier from the DLC roster.

"Spirit Busters!"

A character from the movie where scientists catch ghosts with scientific gadgets: Spirit Busters.

But the viewers weren't worried.

"Oh? That character looks fun."

Lee Gyeongbok, eyeing the character, was intrigued.

And when he got interested...

― Fun = ready to destroy.

― Ah lol, if Godple's playing, he can win with anything

― If character picks won games, this would've been over

― Truly the 'special hire' from the wallet, lol

― Time to go bankrupt betting on Chu-nome!

It was always something new for the viewers to enjoy.
