Chapter 188 - 186: Endless Resentment
Chapter 188 - 186: Endless Resentment
Even the slow movements of the ridiculously colossal beast felt apocalyptic to the insignificant mortals who witnessed it.
Observing the Desolate God’s arrival up close left Westheid feeling a little numb. He knew the Devourer’s true power lay in its Desolate God form, unleashed after releasing its Chaos essence. But knowing the concept was one thing; facing it head-on was another entirely.
"This thing is at the Legendary Tier, isn’t it?"
Westheid clicked his tongue. The fierce winds whipped at his face, and he could actually feel the sting of pain.
"A fully unleashed Desolate God is indeed comparable to a Legend."
The battle intent in Mivana’s golden-red eyes intensified. The Wolf-eared Maiden panted heavily under the dense Chaos aura, but she was still managing to hold on to her sanity. In the past, she would have lost her mind long ago.
BOOM BOOM BOOM—
The behemoth, hundreds of meters tall, began to move. It was a walking mountain range—no, something even more terrifying. An ordinary mountain could at least be blasted through, but this Desolate God seemed impossible to stop.
The only good news was its extremely slow speed. For now, they didn’t have to worry about being instantly crushed.
Mivana started, "Teacher West, maybe if I go all out, I can..."
"Don’t even think about it. The Desolate God is certainly a problem, but it’s not so dire that you need to sacrifice yourself."
’No way! My Mask of Fallen Heaven doesn’t have enough charge for another major battle. If Mivana really went berserk, I wouldn’t be able to knock her to her senses again.’
"In any case, this is all part of the plan."
The complete form of the Dirt World Desolate God was certainly terrifying. Rationally speaking, however, while it was said to be at the Legendary Tier, its power was deceptive. A Desolate God’s main threat is its corrupting nature. If you possess an immunity to Chaos Erosion, its raw stats don’t actually measure up to those of a Legendary Powerhouse.
Besides, even if it is at the Legendary Tier, that doesn’t mean it’s absolutely invincible against those of a lower Tier. It’s not like we can’t even scratch it.
And as long as we can deal effective damage, it can be defeated.
Reiya, holding her Sword Spear wreathed in Dragon Thunder, gazed at the Desolate God and frowned slightly.
"It doesn’t feel as... intense as Scorching Wings."
"True. But you no longer have the power you gained from the Secret Realm Trial. As for me... I’m stronger now than I was then."
Westheid sighed in agreement, then took out his communication terminal. Due to the Chaos Erosion, even transmissions across the same battlefield were disrupted. Fortunately, Duke Qinghui had been repeating the retreat order nonstop, and the Qinghui Army was finally beginning a swift withdrawal.
The Desolate God’s manifestation had devoured all the Chaos Creatures on the field, so with no enemies to block their path, the army retreated with incredible speed. Even under the protection of the Army of Light’s aura, the Chaos Erosion was so dense that Low-tier Transcendents struggled to maintain their combat readiness.
Numbers had lost all meaning. Only a select few were qualified to remain on the battlefield.
Yolanda’s Army of Light, Shamuel’s Mechanized Corps, and the Ring of Clear Skies Casters brought by Hecate.
"Brother, what should we do about this Desolate God? Do we avoid a direct confrontation?"
Yolanda asked as she saw Westheid and his group return to the front line.
That was one option. Once the Dirt World Desolate God unleashes its essence, it enters a self-consuming state. It will eventually burn itself out; it’s just a matter of time.
In fact, experience fighting the Chaos Hundred Forms had produced a special tactic: force it into its Desolate God form, then run. Since Chaos Creatures always acted so predictably, this baiting strategy worked like a charm every time.
Westheid, however, rejected the platinum-haired young woman’s suggestion. He shook his head.
"And let this thing run rampant across Qinghui Territory? The contamination from a Desolate God is no ordinary corruption. I can handle listening to the Pure Holy Spirit’s whimpering, but I cannot accept our grand restoration being delayed for so long."
"Besides, why do you think the Devourer chose this as the battlefield? It’s right on the border of Qinghui Territory. Plus, after absorbing so many Chaos Creatures, it would take at least a month for it to burn out on its own."
"That’s what’s so vile about this beast."
The red-haired Miss Witch spoke up, her bewitching eyes fixed on the Desolate God as it commanded storms and thunder, radiating a thick miasma of filth.
"Even in its final moments, it can’t help but unleash its greatest malice on mortals. Duke Qinghui, we will now give it our all to destroy this Monster."
"Ah, then I’m counting on you all."
Westheid said with a slight smile.
Hecate bore a deep-seated hatred for the Devourer, a blood feud born from the destruction of her homeland and family. The reason she hadn’t moved against the Devourer all these years was partly because she wasn’t certain of victory, and partly because she was busy developing a specific counter-Technique.
And after decades of tireless research, she finally had a significant breakthrough.
When Duke Qinghui first heard the name of the Technique from Hecate, he immediately recalled that this would one day become the Great Witch’s signature ability.
Endless Resentment
A Barrier Technique developed by the Witch, a Combined Magic that incorporates damage, imprisonment, restriction, and curses.
I shall strip thy soul, dissolve thy flesh, evaporate thy blood, and grind thy bones... to nourish my own body. Drink deep of this sweet hatred!
O thing of Chaos Undivided, know the malice of the Creatures of Order!
It was an incredibly powerful Domain Magic. Despite its various restrictions, once deployed, it would inflict continuous, percentage-based damage on all Chaos Creatures within a wide area, while providing equivalent healing and buffs to Order Creatures.
’Glorious percentage-based true damage! It was the perfect counter to a "stat-stick" monster like the Desolate God, and it was the very reason Duke Qinghui wasn’t afraid of the Dirt World Desolate God.’
Westheid asked, "How long will it take to prepare the Technique?"
Hecate shook her head. "We already completed the basic preparations beforehand, but we’ve never deployed it on such a large scale. I can’t give you a specific time."
"Don’t worry about it. Just do your best. We’ll buy you all the time you need."
Westheid waved his hand dismissively, then turned to his companions.
"Stall the Desolate God for as long as you can," he said. "Anyone below the Hero Tier, stay put. Don’t get close. Just provide covering fire from a distance."
Despite what he’d said, there were only four people present who were above the Hero Tier. With Hecate needing to prepare Endless Resentment, that left the task of stalling the beast to the three of them: Westheid, Reiya, and Mivana.
They were the only ones who could. The others could barely even remain in the Desolate God’s vicinity.
Thus, the battle shifted from a structured confrontation between two armies—king against king and general against general—into a united crusade against the Desolate God.
All ranged firepower—from the Floating Battleships in the sky, to the Crown of Banquet Fire on the ground, to the Holy Guns of the Army of Light—was aimed at the slowly moving Desolate God.
There was no need to aim. The Desolate God, a walking cataclysm, was simply too massive. It took the full brunt of every attack without its movements slowing in the slightest. At this rate, it seemed it would simply trample over everything in its path.
But when Westheid and the other two stepped forward, the situation changed completely.
