Chapter 170 - 168: The Increasingly Unsatisfiable Beast-eared Maiden
Westheid had no idea how fast the White-haired Dragon Lady was progressing. Communication in the Mortal World was advanced in some ways, and backward in others.
Although a network-like system called the Magic Net existed, it was unfortunately all local, at best allowing terminals connected to the same Magic Pool to communicate with each other within a limited area.
Long-distance communication relied on Floating Battleships to ferry information back and forth, giving it a certain primitive yet advanced aesthetic.
Meanwhile, Westheid had been buried in work lately. While he was no longer at risk of being corrupted, the reclamation of the Qinghui Territory was far from over. The Chaos Army, commanded by the Devourer, was still entrenched in the Land of Qinghui, watching him like a tiger stalking its prey.
After discovering that the rampaging Mivana had been brought under control, the Chaos Creatures were no longer in retreat. They began stirring restlessly, ready to stage a comeback at any moment.
Westheid didn’t have a good solution for this. He had far too few troops and could only advance his defensive line with the utmost caution, relying on the Holy Land’s Barrier to build new forward bases.
With the efficient purification of the Flame of Extinction, their terrifyingly fast modular construction techniques could quickly establish an impregnable defensive line around the Holy Land.
Having learned his lesson the hard way, Westheid’s strategy had become quite conservative. He wasn’t going to give them any openings. In any case, a passive defense would be fine—he didn’t even have to worry about a surprise attack from the [Dirt World Desolate God]. ’That bastard of a Chaos commander is even more of a coward than I am.’
Westheid genuinely believed it had been a Pyrrhic victory; they had just barely held on by a stroke of luck, avoiding a major disaster. But his subjects didn’t see it that way.
Duke Qinghui’s command was masterful, his attacks like wildfire. A brilliant strategist who led from the front, in just a few months he had achieved results they had never even dared to dream of.
’What was this? This was the return of a king!’
The Purity People, full of praise for their wise and mighty Majesty, set foot once more on the soil of their Holy Land and promptly began what could only be described as performance art.
Gazing upon their devastated homeland, they couldn’t help but weep. Westheid had seen Roy leading a group of them, wailing to the heavens and beating the earth. They shuffled forward on their knees, kissing the ground as they crawled. Some even went so far as to recite verses from the Song of Purity.
Westheid was understanding, yet also deeply moved.
’This is the legacy of a thousand years of Qinghui!’
For him, the Clan Leader, to have his people show such devotion was an undeniable blessing.
Inside a room in the Lord’s Mansion, Westheid sat at his desk, speaking with a series of civil servants.
"...The key is reconnaissance and logistics. There can be no mistakes with either. Whether from Yuanshi Territory or White Rock City, I don’t care where you get the supplies from, but you must ensure the front line is fully stocked. Cost is not a concern. We’re lacking everything but money."
"We still need to forge Shadow Fire Equipment, but they don’t have to work themselves to the bone anymore. They’ve had it really rough recently. Focus on reinforcing the defensive fortifications. Leave no blind spots. Every extra second we can delay a Chaos raid is a win."
"Offer sacrifices and prayers at the Holy Land? Who has time for that right now? I’ve already visited the Pure Holy Spirit on everyone’s behalf. Everything is fine, so you can all rest easy."
"..."
Because he had urged his sister to go study Human Alchemy, Westheid had to take on Yolanda’s former duties, coordinating and arranging all sorts of miscellaneous tasks.
The Qinghui Territory currently had a population of several hundred thousand. As they continued to take in displaced Purity People, that number was expected to keep rising and would likely break the one million mark soon. Even with many skilled civil servants like Roy helping him manage, handling all the administrative affairs still took up a great deal of Westheid’s time.
It wasn’t that he found it tiring, just that he wasn’t used to it.
After all, the old Westheid never bothered with such things. He was only responsible for setting the general direction. The only things that interested Duke Qinghui were killing and fucking.
On particularly busy days, Westheid would be in his office from morning till night, only finishing his last task in the evening.
"Regarding the final piece of our regional defense, the Anti-Chaos Technique... We certainly lack the technical experts for it right now, but the Ring of Clear Skies might have a solution. We should talk to them. After demonstrating our value by retaking the Purity Forest, we should be able to win the support of the Witches."
"Yes, My Lord. We will contact the Ring of Clear Skies."
After the civil servant bowed and left, Westheid stretched and looked toward the only other person left in the room.
The Lady Knight was sitting primly on a sofa in the corner of the room. Her violet-black hair cascaded down like a waterfall over a throw pillow. She wore a long gray jacket over a form-fitting, high-collared black shirt of fine material, which did nothing to hide her exquisite figure, stretched taut over her ample chest.
Her slender waist was cinched by high-waisted leather shorts, revealing the pale, smooth skin of her upper thighs. Below them were black over-the-knee socks, her long legs displaying healthy, graceful lines. Her attire was sharp, yet possessed a stylish, casual flair.
As Westheid’s gaze fell upon her, Mivana was holding a large, juicy peach, taking small bites. The way she chewed slowly made it seem less like she was eating and more like she was just passing the time.
When her dazzling golden eyes met Westheid’s, she stuffed the rest of the fruit into her mouth in a couple of bites and said:
"Teacher West, are you free now?"
"Mhm, I’m pretty much done with work for today."
Westheid stood up and said, "Let’s start training after dinner."
"Okay!"
The fluffy beast ears on the Lady Knight’s head twitched back and forth as she nodded eagerly, an excited flush coloring her handsome face.
Ever since pulling Mivana back from her rampage, Westheid had clearly noticed a change in the Wolf-eared Maiden.
Specifically, she had become extremely proactive about their "Star Universe Therapy."
Before, while she never refused it, she also never requested it herself. Westheid had always been the one to actively seek out the Wolf-eared Maiden for "Star Universe Therapy."
But now, Mivana was the one actively seeking out Westheid.
First thing in the morning, the Beast-eared Maiden would appear at Westheid’s side. She wouldn’t say a word, just wait quietly off to the side until Duke Qinghui had a free moment, at which point she would suggest they train together.
This wasn’t just a one or two-day thing; it was every single day. Even Westheid, who was happy to see her affection for him increase, was starting to break a sweat trying to keep up.
’It wasn’t that he was tired of getting close and cuddly with the handsome and cute Beast-eared Maiden. Rather, Westheid felt that control over the "Star Universe Therapy," a method he himself had proposed, was quietly slipping from his grasp.’
’After all, in the beginning, Westheid had held all the cards. He had the innocent Beast-eared Maiden wrapped around his finger and could tease and deny her however he pleased. But now... it was getting hard to get off the tiger he was riding.’
Simple little games were no longer enough to satisfy Mivana. She could now handle even kisses with perfect composure, and had even managed to overpower Westheid at times, gaining the upper hand in their interactions.
And whenever Westheid showed the slightest bit of reserve, he would be met with a questioning head tilt from the Beast-eared Maiden:
"Teacher, isn’t your method supposed to be remarkably effective?"
"I think we need to strike while the iron is hot. Please, instruct me more!"
