Chapter 186 188: Rescuing Alerie
Chapter 186 188: Rescuing Alerie
"What do you mean no one saw anything?! Did she just leave on her own? If anything happens to my mother, prepare to hang!"
The usually refined Willas had fallen into a frenzy, pointing at the guards and maids and raging thunderously.
At this moment, all of Highgarden was plunged into panic. Torch and lantern light illuminated every corner as if threatening to set the castle ablaze. Cries calling for Alerie were endless, their urgent tones pressing heavily on everyone's hearts.
Watching this scene, Jon was also baffled. Leaving aside how Euron took Alerie, why would he take Alerie?
Snatching the bride was not uncommon, but snatching the mother-in-law was a first!
Jon quickly hurried over to ask what had happened.
"Jon, my mother said she felt dizzy at the banquet and left early. The maid clearly said she was in her bedroom, but when we checked about an hour later, she was gone. We can't find her anywhere."
"Which means Lady Alerie has been missing for at least an hour."
"I've already ordered the castle gates closed."
"Are all the people in the castle still here? Is anyone else missing?" Jon asked calmly.
"Jon, at a time like this we should be looking for my mother first. What does it matter if other people are here?" Loras said impatiently from the side.
Willas suddenly realized Jon meant that perhaps there were still Euron's men lying in ambush within the castle. He hurriedly ordered an investigation, and it was quickly discovered that a bastard girl named Falia was also missing along with Alerie.
She was the daughter of Ser Humfrey of the Shield Islands.
This Ser Humfrey was naturally brought before the gathered Tyrells and Jon for questioning.
Ser Humfrey was an old knight over fifty. Although his hair was sparse, his body was robust. The moment Jon saw him, he thought of Rickard Karstark.
However, his mental state was clearly poor right now.
Because their mother was missing, and very likely taken by an extremely evil individual, the three Tyrell brothers were all manic.
As soon as Humfrey arrived, they surrounded him, hoping to find clues from him, leaving the old knight at a loss.
"The guard said your daughter was chatting with that Euron. What is going on?" Willas asked with a frown.
"When did your daughter disappear? Why didn't you tell us?" Loras was even more suspicious.
"Where was your daughter when my mother went missing?" Garlan's brain was working at peak speed for the first time in his life.
Although Ser Humfrey seemed to be a victim as well, the three frantic brothers couldn't care less.
Finally, Jon stepped forward to mediate: "Ser Willas, Ser Garlan, Ser Loras, let me ask." Saying this, he separated the three brothers from Ser Humfrey: "Ser Humfrey, your daughter is a bastard. Where is her mother from?"
Seeing Jon, the only one who remained calm, the trembling knight relaxed a little and stammered, "Falia's mother... I met her... I met her in the Free Cities. She was a silver-haired woman—"
Free Cities. Blackfyre! Targaryen!
Jon instantly figured out Euron's purpose. He wanted someone with Dragonlord blood to perform some kind of ritual.
Euron had seen the Dragon Mother. Combined with the dragon egg, this guy most likely wanted to hatch a dragon by sacrificing blood relatives, just like Daenerys.
Most likely, he intended to impregnate Falia and Alerie, then sacrifice the children in their wombs.
Since it was confirmed to be Euron, there was no need to keep searching here.
"Willas, order the port blockaded. Maester Lomys, send a message to Casterly Rock, tell Ser Brynden to intercept all ships coming from the south!" Jon ordered loudly. "Ser Loras, Ser Garlan, we go to the port!"
Soon, a large group prepared to leave Highgarden in a mighty contingent. Hearing of the matter, Oberyn joined them.
A fully armed elite cavalry unit rumbled toward the port. Ghost led Willas's hounds in the front, while Jon released a raven to fly quickly toward the port on the Mander.
However, Jon knew clearly in his heart that with Euron's speed, he certainly wouldn't be at the port by now. So he controlled the raven to fly toward the river mouth leading to the sea.
Sure enough, Jon soon saw a black-sailed ship drifting at the mouth of the Mander. The figurehead was an iron-cast naked woman.
It was Euron's ship—the Silence.
The Silence was at least ten leagues from the shore. It would be impossible to catch up if they started chasing now. However, the Silence hadn't left, nor had it entered the Mander. After all, he was wanted at this moment. Judging by the ship's state, it seemed to be waiting for something.
Just then, through the raven's eyes, Jon saw a fishing boat slowly approaching a few leagues away from the Silence. Jon sent a raven closer to investigate, but the person on the boat suddenly turned his head, revealing a triumphant smile.
In his view, the purpose of this trip to Highgarden had been achieved. No one could stop him now.
"Come and chase me." The eye-patched Euron smiled faintly at Jon's raven, and the connection between Jon and the raven was instantly severed!
"So strong!"
Jon was startled, his wariness of Euron rising again.
But what was certain now was that Alerie and the bastard girl were definitely on that small fishing boat.
Jon calculated the distance between Euron's small fishing boat and his Silence, as well as the time it would take for his group to reach the port. He found that Euron could easily transport the two women to the ship before they arrived at the port.
The Silence itself was fast. If Jon's group had to commandeer a ship, it would take ten to twenty minutes just to get it ready and moving—enough time for Euron to escape scot-free.
Jon knew he had to set off immediately upon reaching the port, and he needed a speed faster than ordinary sailing ships.
Realizing this, Jon spurred his warhorse, pulling ahead of everyone by a length. Soon, the group arrived at the port.
Highgarden was prosperous, and ships at the Mander port were endless. Even at night, the sails on the river were as dense as the waves.
"Quick! Blockade the port!" Loras pointed at the river ahead and roared.
"No need, Euron's ship isn't at the port, he's at the river mouth!"
"Then prepare a ship!" Loras said urgently, his voice cracking from anxiety.
"Use my ship!" Oberyn ordered his eldest daughter, acting as his squire, to prepare the ship.
But Jon saw the hatch at the bottom of the Silence had already opened.
"It's too late," Jon suddenly said. He clamped the horse's belly with his legs and rushed in another direction.
The Tyrell brothers were at a loss, simply following Jon subconsciously. But upon arriving at the spot, Loras couldn't help but despair. This was a place specifically for fishermen's boats to dock, and fishing boats were notoriously slow: "Jon, why did you bring us here? These are all fishing boats. Are you going to use a fishing boat to chase a sailing ship?"
"Exactly."
Jon answered decisively without explaining further. He dismounted and jumped directly onto a fishing boat, then hopped from one boat to another.
Ghost followed closely behind. With Jon running in front and Ghost chasing behind, everyone was shocked to find that Jon's movements and agility actually left his wolf behind.
But what's the use of running fast? He needs to chase a ship on the water!
They watched as Jon jumped onto a fishing boat that was preparing to enter the port. He took a gemstone from his person and gave it to the fisherman, then helped the fisherman dump the fish from the boat.
"He... does he really intend to use a fishing boat to chase a sailing ship? Is he an idiot?!" Loras, seeing Jon's incomprehensible behavior, was so anxious that tears were about to fall.
His mother's life was uncertain, yet here he was with this unreliable brother-in-law doing this kind of thing.
"Ship! Go prepare a ship quickly!" A bastard of the Tyrell family shouted loudly, and Loras turned to leave.
But Oberyn on the side was still staring at Jon. He believed Jon couldn't possibly be acting without purpose.
Since he could conquer Casterly Rock, there must be a reason for doing this! But Oberyn really didn't know what use it was for Jon to do this.
The next scene simply shocked him. Jon began rowing the oars. The fishing boat under his feet accelerated suddenly. The speed at which he rowed became faster and faster, so much so that a long white wake trailed behind the boat.
"Is... is this still human?!"
Oberyn had rowed a boat himself. He knew how strenuous it was to row oars through water. But Jon could actually row the oars into a blur, quickly surpassing one sailing ship after another.
Moreover, taking advantage of its small hull and ease of turning, his fishing boat darted across the water like a loach.
Meanwhile, inside Highgarden, Mace was uncharacteristically calm, though his chest heaved violently.
The Maester beside him knew that the Lord Duke was truly angry.
He might already be brewing a plan to attack the Iron Islands.
Catelyn was sitting with Olenna and Willas.
The current situation reminded her of when Bran encountered an assassination attempt shortly after Ned left Winterfell.
"Rest assured, Lady Olenna. Ser Garlan is a fierce warrior, Ser Loras's martial arts are high enough, and Jon is invincible. They will definitely bring Lady Alerie back safely," Catelyn said, then suddenly saw Oberyn's bastard lover. "And Prince Oberyn... Lady Alerie will be fine."
Catelyn tried hard to comfort her, but Olenna was still worried.
Alerie wasn't just a daughter-in-law. After so many years together, she had long treated Alerie as her own daughter.
"Mm, I know. I believe in the children." Olenna didn't say much, just held Margaery's hand tightly.
Margaery's face was also devoid of color.
Just a second ago she was about to have her bedding ceremony with Jon, and suddenly came the news of her mother's disappearance.
This rollercoaster feeling was truly unbearable.
"Alerie is your mother, and she will become my mother too. I will definitely bring her back safely."
Margaery suddenly thought of Jon's promise to her and felt the tightness in her chest ease slightly.
As long as Jon can really fulfill his promise, I definitely won't care about that Frey girl.
Seven Hells, why am I thinking about that right now!
Margaery's thoughts were chaotic, and for a moment she felt very ashamed. Shame, worry, unease... various mixed emotions poured into her stomach like waves of cold water.
