Chapter 50: Old Soldiers Never Die, Treads Crush All
"My dear, I got promoted!" The man's delighted expression overflowed, "Hehe, I just helped the director deal with some small trash and successfully got a new position!"
"Ah, of course, we'll go to Hawaii this weekend. I just took a big chunk from two veterans' pensions yesterday, definitely enough for us to use!"
"What? Afraid of being investigated? Who in the entire bureau doesn't do this? The entire Department of Veterans Affairs has hundreds of thousands of employees with a total budget over a hundred billion dollars. What we're taking barely counts as money?"
"The director and deputy director take millions every year, and various hospital directors scoop up tens of millions. Haven't they all been fine?"
"Don't even mention them. A few months ago, the President wanted to disband our department, but wasn't it rejected by the federal judges?"
"My dear, you need to understand, this is America! As long as you have money and pay taxes, don't worry about where the money comes from. Once it's in our hands, it's ours!"
Hearing these words, Remus clenched his fists tightly!
Before this, he had actually believed their lies about "giving the money to more needy veterans." He never imagined there were no more needy people—only themselves!
These physically able individuals, relying on their own power, wantonly embezzled the money they had earned with their lives!
And they were so brazen about it, so utterly shameless!Or perhaps, in this country, shame never existed in the first place. There was only "profit." For such profit, these people had long ago sold their souls to demons!
Thinking of this, Remus suddenly understood, "So, I came here to collect debts for the demons!"
These malicious souls must be the demons' favorites. Remus had this feeling.
Therefore, he didn't stand outside the counter but walked toward a side door that led to the back office.
The speaking man naturally didn't notice this, still immersed in the thrill of promotion and fantasies about his girlfriend. Then someone grabbed him by the neck.
Remus glanced at his name tag. He was called Martin Tanat, a seemingly sunny white man who engaged in shady, crawling filth!
Martin gasped for breath before realizing his situation. This shabbily dressed man was gripping his neck and lifting him up!
"Security!" A shrill scream erupted, instantly turning the previously calm and somewhat boring Department of Veterans Affairs into chaos!
Several security guards rushed over with their electric batons. When had this man entered the back office? How didn't they know?
If this man really caused trouble in the back office, their jobs would be over!
Therefore, the security guards reached Remus's side almost instantly, pointing their electric batons at him. "Sir, we won't say it twice! Put Martin down and raise your hands!"
"You're already suspected of intentional assault. We have the right to detain you and hand you over to the police!"
After all, they were an institution related to the military, naturally having connections with military police and sufficient power to make a case ironclad.
In situations like this, the Department of Veterans Affairs would absolutely not allow such incidents, so they would definitely crush this man, regardless of the reason.
Of course, none of this was within Remus's considerations. His purpose here was simple—revenge!
He had done so much for this country, and he only wanted his pension. Was that so difficult?
"I've come here many times, but every time, you tell me my pension can't be withdrawn temporarily!"
"This isn't your money—it's my money, the compensation the federal government gave me!"
"I fought wars for so many years, asking for nothing. Now I can't even get my own money back?"
Remus roared loudly, tightly gripping the neck of the man named Martin as he questioned him!
"S-sorry!" Martin's face turned crimson as he struggled to speak. "Let me down... I... I'll approve your application right now!"
Remus released him, watching Martin stagger toward the security guards, already understanding the other's intentions.
Sure enough, this man had no intention of transferring money to him. Instead, he went directly behind the security guards, clutching his neck with a ferocious expression, saying, "Quick! Grab him!"
Remus knew he couldn't have any expectations for people with no moral bottom line. Fortunately, he never had such thoughts to begin with.
The group of security guards surrounded him, all holding electric batons. Just pressing the button would make even a rhinoceros tremble and convulse under the massive electric current.
This was their collective confidence and the reason why the surrounding employees hadn't left but were instead watching the spectacle.
But just a few dozen seconds later, these people wished they had two more legs to escape faster.
Because, within those few dozen seconds, this unfamiliar man, enduring the electric currents from five batons, used his fists—seemingly harder than steel—to knock down the security guards one by one.
These seemingly extremely robust security guards fell like infants under his fists, quickly "falling asleep."
Six security guards didn't last even a minute, gradually filling the faces of the onlookers with fear—except for Martin, who had just escaped danger.
His face remained flushed, and he kept coughing continuously, but he showed no fear. Instead, a sickly smile spread across his face. "Great, you actually beat them!"
"Then now, you should raise your hands and surrender!"
Martin raised his gun, released the safety, and aimed at Remus!
"Retired soldiers should properly find jobs and work! Coming here to beg like parasites—what's that about?" he shouted loudly. After such emotional swings, his mental state had clearly become very dangerous. "You disgusting parasites, costing the federal government so much money every year to support, yet you're all useless trash!"
"Now, raise your hands and kneel before me!"
Martin had already planned in his mind how to torment the other. Even if the man knelt, he would still shoot this man's arm joints and knees. He wanted to make this man permanently disabled!
Damn it, these inferior Marine grunts actually threatening them with fists and feet. When had he ever suffered such humiliation?
But he didn't know that Remus, who had already made a contract with Baphomet, gained his first ability: seeing through the layers of the underworld.
This ability, when facing humans, amounted to "surface-level mind reading"!
He had already read the other's malice—that utterly unconcealed, deep, terrifying malice that made Remus feel his actions were still too lenient!
"You're worse than demons! Clearly, you're the ones plundering our money, yet you blame us for not trying hard enough? And call us trash?" Remus scolded loudly, step by step walking up to Martin. "Now, aim at my eyes and shoot!"
Looking into Remus's eyes, Martin felt a wave of terror!
Because the other's eyes had no pupils, no whites—only black voids like abysses that could suck him in!
That fear made him completely collapse! He couldn't even lift his gun, screamed once, and tried to escape!
But he didn't have time to escape. With every step he took, his body emitted a strange sound like fire and water colliding.
With every step, his body seemed to shrink, making his footsteps even more unsteady!
Martin looked back in extreme terror only to discover he now had only a head left.
His calves, thighs, waist, and torso had transformed into four flames. On the four paths of his escape, they were ignited by black flames, burning slowly.
This "looking back" was literally turning his "head"!
Martin wanted to scream, but he couldn't make any sound.
"Wordless fire, that's what it means..." Remus nodded nearby, yet felt no sense of vengeance fulfilled.
He raised his head, looking toward the upper levels of this building. The real suffering came from there!
