Chapter 329: The Holy Maiden's Departure
Chapter 329: The Holy Maiden's Departure
Hearing these words, Siriv immediately broke out in a cold sweat!
Having been in a high position for a long time, and faced with Carolyn's soft tone, he had suffered from a delusion, thinking she was still just that orphaned girl from back then.
Why hadn't he realized that the person he was facing was never Carolyn the "orphan girl," but a "Holy Maiden" of The Church?
Even the previous Church was not an entity his Olsen Family could afford to offend!
America could afford to ignore the Pope because of its sheer massive scale and its power as the world's number one superpower, coupled with the fact that The Church's influence did not lie in politics.
But as for families like theirs, how could they possibly have anything capable of withstanding the pressure of The Church?
The current Church seemed to have lost much of its power—since many people had been directly purged by The Church—but bathed in the radiance of the Era of the Extraordinary, their hidden strength had actually grown even more formidable.
Those embezzled assets and transferred wealth had now fallen back into their hands one by one, allowing the tentacles of The Church to truly reach every corner of the globe.
No matter what official or family it was, none would want to offend or oppose a Transcendent faction possessing over a billion believers, Transcendent Power, and top-tier backing.
And in California, in Luo City, and in San Diego, it was even more impossible, because this city was now America's Catholic Holy Land!During the mere six months Angus spent in this city Preaching, offering blessings, and presiding over funerals, he had perfectly merged The Catholic Church with the city.
And because of the threat from the Original Inhabitants of The South, Nuland had repeatedly elevated The Church's status, even raising it to the level of the city's sole religion. Other immigrant religions were suppressed purely to establish its absolute orthodoxy.
Under such circumstances, if news of the Olsen Family "offending" The Church leaked out, those families who already found them an eyesore due to Carolyn's existence would band together to wipe them off the map!
This was an undeniable reality, and the root cause that snapped him wide awake.
The person standing before him was no lonely girl, but a "Holy Maiden" whose dignity was far more important than some people's lives. As long as Carolyn willed it, the Olsen Family would face Clan Annihilation today!
"I sincerely apologize. I will not disturb you again in the future!" Siriv declared, drenched in cold sweat as he hurriedly retreated out the door.
At the doorway, he also spotted Angus approaching. "Mr. Siriv, you made a very correct decision!" Angus stated.
Siriv was utterly terrified, his voice turning completely hoarse. "I apologize, Cardinal Bennett. The Olsen Family will properly respond to this matter!"
Angus merely nodded silently, watching as the sweat-drenched man stumbled away from the church.
Before leaving, Siriv took one final glance back into the room. That once timid and blank-faced orphan girl had already grown to a point where the entire family could only look up to her in awe!
Inside, Carolyn finally stepped out and faced Angus. "Teacher... I don't know if I went a bit overboard..."
"You did nothing wrong, my child!" Angus comforted her. "Your greatest virtue lies in your kindness, but your greatest flaw is also your kindness!"
"Aimless kindness is simply a form of self-harm! You guarded your bottom line, proving you have grown considerably!" Angus chuckled. "Compared to that young girl who used to cry her eyes out to me, you have made immense progress, haven't you?"
"Teacher!" Carolyn blushed. She recalled her first meeting with Angus, and their first candid conversation.
At that time, the Garden Cathedral incident had just passed, and only she and Angus remained in the entire cathedral.
To prevent her from feeling afraid, Angus deliberately locked himself in the Confessional, having a deep conversation with the girl through the closed door.
Back then, they were not the Cardinal and the Holy Maiden they were today. They were merely a Small-Town Priest and an Unaffiliated Nun at the church.
It was during this very conversation that Angus learned about Carolyn's life story.
She was a member of the Olsen Family. However, during a family upheaval where her parents and relatives tragically died in an accident, she lost her inheritance rights despite being a direct descendant. Thus, she was exiled to San Diego.
But Carolyn didn't actually think this was a terrible fate. On the contrary, she felt it was quite nice.
Her mother had been a devout Catholic, and this devout faith to serve The Lord had been passed down from her.
Her initial thoughts had been extremely pure. She harbored no desire to exact revenge on her family, nor did she even entertain the thought of returning. She merely wished to worship devoutly—just like her mindset when she first picked up that fragment.
Later, under Angus's guidance, Carolyn came to understand her Divine Faith and Mission. Knowing her responsibilities shaped her into who she was today.
Back then in the Garden Cathedral, Carolyn had asked Angus a few very interesting questions.
"Father, is this what a church is truly like?" Having just experienced an Angel-led Judgment, she appeared somewhat terrified. This was entirely different from the church she understood and completely at odds with her perception of The Church, as if they existed in entirely different dimensions.
"What kind of place do you think a church should be?" Angus asked gently.
"A kind place. Everyone should be kind, helping others out of the goodness of their hearts, and offering blessings to The Lord..." Carolyn mumbled blankly.
"Yes, it is supposed to be such a place. Everyone should harbor goodwill, and everyone should harbor kindness. That is what a church truly is!" Angus nodded. "But my child, in this world, there are not only The Faithful and ordinary people. There are also Infidels, heretics, Unbelievers, and apostates!"
"Perhaps some will disguise themselves as Believers, telling you that this is exactly what a Believer should look like!"
"Some will masquerade as messengers of The Lord, telling you that this is The Lord's Will!"
"There will also be those who were originally The Lord's shepherds, yet descended into Depravity, taking on the guise of a Demon..."
"But there will always be those who hold steadfast to their Divine Faith, and there will always be kindhearted people. The kind should not be buried by Evil, and malicious apostles ought to face judgment! Even more people should spread The Lord's Divine Glory, scattering it across the entire world!"
"Only then can more people experience this kindness and warmth, and only then will those filthy atrocities diminish."
"This is Divine Faith. This is the very meaning of our existence!"
Angus's words flowed into Carolyn's mind like streams of clear spring water, pulling her out of her ignorant, dazed stupor.
"Then what should I do?" she asked blankly.
"Go and converse with The Lord. The Lord will tell you what you must do..."
...
"Teacher, this is all thanks to your excellent guidance!" Carolyn said softly as the memory flashed through her mind. "Then can you tell me what I should do now?"
Angus's voice echoed slowly, "First Corinthians says: But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one."
"The Church is holy. Before the final judgment, there will always be a situation where the wheat and weeds grow together. This is not surprising!"
"But in the end, the weeds will have Nowhere to Hide beneath the holy radiance, and we must ensure the wheat is not mistakenly uprooted!"
Carolyn nodded. Cupping the Crystal Stone at her chest, she whispered, "It tells me that you came this time because you wish for me to step forward, right?"
"Yes, I wish for you to step forward!" Angus declared. "Every Saintly Figure of The Lord should walk out into the Mortal Realm, rather than studying endlessly within the church. It is time for you to go out and see the world!"
A hint of panic surfaced in Carolyn's eyes. "Can you come with me?"
Although she appeared completely composed, she was ultimately still a young woman who had just reached adulthood. Every action she took had been under Angus's guidance, so the sudden prospect of venturing out alone naturally made her panic.
"Do not be nervous, my child. You are The Lord's proxy. You are His Walker on earth. As you travel your path, He will be watching over you from the heavens!"
"Go and do what you must. Just like Joan of Arc, go save the suffering masses, reverse those tragedies that should never have happened, and scatter The Lord's Radiance across the entire nation!" Angus's words seemed to echo and drift far away in her ears.
The young woman nodded gently, fully aware that she could not possibly refuse such a task.
She was a Holy Maiden—The Church's Holy Maiden, The Lord's Holy Maiden. It was her absolute duty to make this journey!
Soon, the entire world received the news: The Catholic Holy Maiden, the Emissary of Precepts, The Lord's proxy, Carolyn Olsen, had stepped out of the church!
