Chapter 18: "Mother"
Chapter 18: "Mother"
Bai Yang was certainly not someone aligned with goodness. The moment he awakened his supernatural abilities and began using lies, his nature had already started moving toward chaos.
After all, only chaotic circumstances could allow him to obtain more Wish Force.
However, the things he had read from Caroline's mind still made him feel uncomfortable.
After all, places like churches should inherently be sacred and benevolent, serving as the source of human faith and the dwelling place of human light.
In this regard, Angus in distant Vespuchi Town handled things quite well.
As practically the most authoritative person in that small town, he had hardly used his power for any unnecessary purposes, instead applying it to youth education, town maintenance, and major festivals.
The church hadn't been renovated for twenty years, yet he never suggested using his authority to push for renovations.
He simply saved up money himself, thinking that if he could find a young monk to take over the church, that person could use these funds for minor renovations.
This was also why Bai Yang chose Angus as his first supernatural being.
He perfectly fit the definition of a clergy member "monk"—someone who practiced self-restraint and followed propriety. In Catholic definition, he represented the opposite of the seven deadly sins: loyalty, temperance, generosity, diligence, patience, tolerance, and justice!
But now, what appeared before Bai Yang was a church that embodied nearly all vices, which indeed made it hard for him to maintain composure.
The most criticized aspect was the current bishop of this San Diego Garden Church—Ken Burke—who had extended his hands to young boys and girls.
"Your Grace, you seem quite angry. Do you wish to vent this anger?" Alvin asked.
Bai Yang waved his hand. Of course he was furious. Through this church's information network, along the high-level spiritual pathway called "information," he had discovered even more things.
This was a pathway only superhumans could access, existing within the omnipresent information throughout the world.
Of course, Bai Yang could describe this ability in a more fashionable way—for instance, omniscience.
This was also a high-level application of the Divine Spark of Lies—he deceived himself into knowing this information, and then he truly knew it.
From this data, he learned about this bishop's practices.
During his ten years as bishop of Garden Church, he had committed multiple crimes through methods like "baptism," "christening," and "exorcism"!
And just this year, he was still engaging in such activities, long-term exploitation under the name of "exorcism."
These matters were even open secrets within Garden Church itself!
He would invade those poor victims under the pretext that they were possessed by "devils" and "evil spirits."
Meanwhile, those ignorant parents, trusting the church, would choose to bring their children back repeatedly, only to have them harmed again and again.
"No wonder... the suicide rate among children in this city is so high!" Bai Yang watched the news where the bishop shamelessly spoke about "too many city evil spirits"—words that seemed utterly absurd—and felt nothing but disgust.
Suddenly, when he saw one particular message, his hand trembled violently!
"Damn!"
...
San Diego County, Chula Vista area.
As an area adjacent to the city proper, the environment here remained relatively decent, though still somewhat chaotic.
After all, being a city bordering Mexico, the issue of illegal immigrants represented this city's biggest problem.
Of course, none of this really concerned the residents living in St. John's Community, since theirs was an affluent neighborhood with twenty-four-hour police patrols and comprehensive security facilities.
Therefore, the people of St. John's Community were all clean and tidy—except for one woman named Mona.
She walked along the road with vacant eyes, avoided by everyone in the community, who pointed at her behind her back.
A young girl looked at her curiously, "Is this your community's 'madwoman' Mona?"
Hearing the girl's words, the boy beside her nodded gently, "Yes, that's her! She wasn't like this originally. When I was little, I used to play with her daughter, but later... her daughter got possessed by an evil spirit, and I heard the exorcism failed and she died!"
"She and her husband went to the church to demand their daughter's body, but the church thought they'd gone mad and had people escort them back."
"Then her husband died too, and this woman went insane, surviving on community relief every day."
Hearing this, the girl grew even more curious, "Then why doesn't your community kick her out? Why still provide her relief?"
The boy shrugged, "Who knows? Anyway, my parents both said we're not allowed to speak ill of her or curse her!"
The girl nodded, "Alright then, are we going to church today?"
"Yes, but not Garden Church. We're going to the church in Los Angeles. Our family has always gone to the Los Angeles church..."
Watching the boy and girl's retreating figures, the woman named "Mona" turned her head, revealing a bizarre and terrifying smile.
"Hehehe... little Lina... Mommy's right here!"
She continued forward, stumbling, vacant-minded, staggering along.
Yet when all the adults in the community looked at her, their eyes held no disgust—only pity.
Two elderly women even prayed for her, "Lord... why must Mona suffer such torment... Lord, have you truly cast your gaze upon her?"
After praying, the two old women returned home.
Only Bai Yang remained standing on the road, watching the woman before him with complex emotions in his eyes.
"Your Grace, can you not bear to see this?" Alvin said.
"This isn't about bearing it—this is called respect!" Bai Yang said, "You should have seen her life too. This woman is incredibly strong!"
Alvin fell silent, only speaking again after a long pause, "Indeed deserving of respect. This woman actually bears dozens of different kinds of suffering upon her. She should have died long ago, yet she still lives!"
"Of course she must live. How could physical suffering compare to even one ten-thousandth of spiritual agony?"
"Her daughter died in the church, her husband died because of this matter, she survived by pretending to be mad, but now she's truly insane!"
Bai Yang said, watching this deranged woman while reading her information, "She's too suitable, and can even match some special designations!"
The two watched the woman as she entered her house, saw the goat horn she carried in her embrace, and then opened her villa's basement.
In the basement, a pattern drawn in blood—so old it had turned black—appeared before her eyes.
This thing was unmistakably a pentagram!
In Catholic culture, the pentagram symbolized demons and was particularly favored by various demonic deities.
Then the woman pulled up her sleeve, revealing her wrist covered with black blood scabs, and without hesitation pierced the scabs with the goat horn's tip!
Blood flowed from her wrist, spreading across the entire area.
As if feeling no pain, she knelt on this pentagram, her eyes filled with vengeful fury and resentment!
"Lucifer, King of Hell;
I pray to you here:
May my life, my soul, everything I possess be exchanged for my enemies' lives!
I offer my first breath a hundred years from now, and all the suffering in the abyssal inferno, in exchange!"
Her prayer lacked logic, but she couldn't wait any longer!
She could feel her life flickering like a candle in the wind, teetering on the edge.
So she chose to sacrifice herself in her final moments.
Her blood soon drained completely, her withered, emaciated body lying in the basement, awaiting death's arrival.
Then a hand suddenly appeared before her, holding a parchment that recorded her promises and costs!
The hand suddenly burst into flames, burning the parchment to ashes.
Finally, mysterious words reached the woman's nearly deaf ears: "Contract established!"
Only then did Bai Yang enter the basement, looking at the woman who had become a corpse, and without hesitation infused half a measure of Divine Power.
"Under Lucifer's contract, after death she will become a vengeful evil spirit!" Bai Yang said slowly.
And this corpse, through his words, gradually transformed into a semi-transparent existence.
"Your Grace, does this evil spirit have a name?" Alvin asked curiously, watching Bai Yang's actions.
"Yes, this evil spirit's name is Mother!" Bai Yang gazed up at the sky.
