Chapter 267 - 257: Something’s Wrong with the Script
"They’re here," Wei Heng said slowly.
In the distance, a crowd of figures appeared at the edge of the light, standing silently outside the abandoned storefronts. Each one was gaunt and emaciated, looking like a desiccated corpse, but their eyes were utterly ferocious.
"Why do I get the feeling... they see us as food?" Qi Xiang whispered.
"Be a little more confident, Missy," Lin Jin said, secretly tightening his grip on his weapon, though his expression remained relaxed. "You can drop the ’I get the feeling’ part." ’The way these infected—if you can even call them human anymore—were staring, it was obvious they saw them as food.’
Qi Xiang subconsciously moved closer to Gu Xi. Being stared at by those things gave her goosebumps all over.
Gu Xi, however, found this strange. This batch of infected seemed different from what Li Ming had described before. Back when Ye Junhan and his group were found, they could still be saved by injecting a special serum. But these ones in front of her...
’Are they some other form of zombie?’
Gu Xi wasn’t sure. She had never encountered this type of infected before.
Just then, a figure suddenly stepped out from the opposing group.
Lin Jin and Zhao Li, standing at the very front, simultaneously tightened their grips on their weapons.
The newcomer stopped about fifty meters from the campfire. His eyes swiveled stiffly, his gaze finally landing on the man Gu Xi’s group had revived. "Betrayer. Die."
He sounded as if he hadn’t spoken in a long time, his voice strangely stiff and hoarse.
Hearing this, the man Gu Xi’s group had rescued struggled for a moment, as if trying to stand, but ultimately let his arms fall limply.
His expression, however, remained calm.
Gu Xi couldn’t help but take another look at him before her gaze slowly shifted up to the figure opposite them. "You say he’s a betrayer?"
The figure opposite them didn’t answer, merely shifting his gaze mechanically to Gu Xi.
He remained silent, as if his reactions were a few beats too slow, and simply sized Gu Xi up.
Gu Xi found this infected’s behavior quite interesting.
’Clearly, they’re different from the ordinary zombies of the past. They have rational thought, they can think, and it looks like they even have some of their memories, or they wouldn’t have used the word ’betrayer’.’
’Gu Xi’s intuition told her that they hated humans, and saw them as prey... or even food.’
"I don’t think they’re human anymore," Qi Xiang whispered to Gu Xi, covering her mouth.
Gu Xi nodded.
’One’s own kind does not eat each other.’
’But these infected clearly saw them as food.’
’In that sense, they really couldn’t be considered human anymore.’
Just then, the figure opposite them finally spoke again. "You... are very special."
He was clearly speaking to Gu Xi.
As soon as he spoke, the crowd of figures that had been standing silently in the distance began to advance on them in unison, as if they had received some kind of command.
They weren’t moving fast, but their approach was inexplicably terrifying.
Qi Xiang found the situation eerie and subconsciously glanced at the man they had rescued.
When the man noticed her gaze, he asked casually, "Do you have a spare weapon?"
He paused, then added, "Something seems to be wrong with my ability, but I’ll have no problem defending myself if I have a weapon."
Qi Xiang glanced at the shards of ice still clinging to his body, showing no signs of melting. He looked as if he were frozen, unable to move. But whether they should give him a weapon...
"You’re not going to shoot us in the back, are you?" Qi Xiang asked with a frown.
Nearby, Qin Yi muttered under his breath, "If you ask him that, of course he’s going to deny it, even if that’s exactly what he was planning."
Qin Shi calmly drew the dagger from her waist, gave it a casual flourish, and said with cold intensity, "I’ll be watching. He won’t get the chance."
The man was speechless. ’...Could the intel from my superiors be wrong? Why do I feel like... this isn’t how it was supposed to go?’
Just then, Gu Xi spoke up. "Give it to him."
The moment she spoke, the dagger in Qin Shi’s hand shot straight toward the man.
The man instinctively tilted his head and raised a hand, and the dagger landed securely in his grasp.
’So he’s got some real skill. No wonder he’s so confident.’
Qi Xiang glanced at him, just as the group of infected across from them suddenly threw back their heads and let out a long howl.
"AWOOOOO—"
Qi Xiang couldn’t help but mutter, "Did they evolve into the Werewolf Clan or something?"
The man, who had just caught the dagger and was about to show off a little to earn their trust, was once again left speechless.
Just then, Wei Heng swiftly raised his hand. The ground beneath the opposing group of infected suddenly turned to sand, causing them to sink. The quicksand instantly flooded their mouths and noses, cutting off their howls.
