Chapter 202: Two sides of the hall
Sebastian used his authority in no time to make all the elders agree to the law change, even when many of them found it ridiculously absurd and sudden, considering it had been something that had been in place since the beginning of time to make she-wolves aware of the need to control their heat and to not tempt the males or distract them, unless they wanted to offer themselves willingly.
Many were against it, but with the supreme Alpha’s commanding authority and his aura pressing down on the room, there was no way any of them could dare say no.
Sebastian sent the signed documents of his agreement and the elders’ agreements to Viola that night, along with a text message that he wouldn’t be able to make it to her place tonight as something important had come up.
With the rumors circulating through the building, he had decided to keep his distance until things settled back into place. People were well aware of how difficult it was for mates to stay away from each other, especially when they lived in the same building, and if Sebastian was seen staying away from his wife, they would naturally begin to believe everything was nothing but rumors and his mate would be safe from falling victim to any kidnapping or poisoning attempts.
Rather than go to her and follow every instinct inside him that was pushing him toward her, Sebastian arranged an Alphas meeting that night with the visiting guest Alphas and had dinner with them while they discussed important matters, making sure they could all see plainly that he would rather spend his evening with them than go to his Luna.
Viola on the other hand was disappointed that he wasn’t going to come, but she had already started to practice being unaffected by him and whatever he did, even when it was hugging another woman and sending her out through back doors like something he needed to hide.
She hadn’t married Sebastian to be possessive of him or to keep him tied to her and suffocate him the way she had suffocated Evan until he grew tired of her, and she hadn’t come here to let her heart fall into another love she hadn’t asked for. She was here for Ivy, to live a better life, one without selfishness and desperation pulling her in directions she couldn’t afford to go.
Not having him around was in fact good for her. She told herself that firmly, even when her heart and body didn’t agree with her in the slightest. She pushed all of those feelings down anyway and kept them there. The only truly disappointing part was the fact that his presence and his intimacy were the very things that would help her wolf surface, and she couldn’t afford to forget that.
Viola had wondered all afternoon what had caused her eyesight to suddenly heal so completely that she could see without her glasses, but now that she thought carefully about what Sebastian had said regarding Doctor Gilbert’s analysis, it must have been because of Sebastian’s temporary mark or the intimacy between them on their wedding night that must have begun helping her in ways she hadn’t yet fully understood.
Who knew, perhaps if she found Ivy, everything would naturally begin to fall into place and they would both finally have their wolves and find where they truly fit into this world.
Rather than beat herself up over the fact that she was growing feelings for the man she had married, feelings she hadn’t wanted and hadn’t planned for, Viola put all of her time and focus into leading the she-wolf council and preparing to announce the law change to them within the next two days.
On the day she was going to meet the she-wolves, while there were still guests who had come for the wedding present in Silver, she didn’t dress too fancy but she made sure everyone would be invited, including the remaining Moonwillow guests and the North Pack members who were still in Silver.
"Many will appreciate the change, I am sure." Zoe assured as they left Viola’s penthouse and made their way to the meeting hall. "But I hope you are ready to face those who won’t appreciate it."
Viola raised her hand and tucked strands of hair behind her ear as she looked at Zoe. "Any she-wolf who wouldn’t appreciate the change is one of the ones who made the belief stronger every time."
Viola was well aware of those kinds of she-wolves. Leni had been one of them, though unfortunately for Leni, she didn’t have the privilege of joining the council now. From what Viola had heard, she had been locked in the dungeon along with her mate for pulling that scheme to seduce the supreme Alpha. She and Evan and Eliot would be sitting down there for the next three months, and Viola couldn’t find it in herself to feel sorry about that.
"You will be surprised." Zoe said with a serious frown settling over her delicate face. "There are some who genuinely wanted to be taken when in heat. Who believed it was simply the natural order of things and never questioned it."
Not being one to experience an intense heat herself, and her scent sitting only a little above that of an omega after the bullet she had taken for her brother, Zoe still strongly believed every other she-wolf deserved to be protected regardless of what they had been taught to accept.
But then no one had ever truly raised the case before, for many of the she-wolves in positions of power wouldn’t want the change any more than the males did. It was a system that had worked in the favor of those with power for far too long.
"I am glad you are coming with me to the council even when you have an important fashion show happening today." Viola remarked, and Zoe waved her hand in easy dismissal.
"Don’t worry about it, my manager and assistants will take care of everything. It’s my first time stepping into the she-wolf council anyway. I might as well start showing up for something that actually matters, and what better way to begin than campaigning for something good as the Alpha’s sister."
When they arrived at the hall, every she-wolf who had attended the wedding in Silver was already seated. Many of them weren’t happy to see Viola, while some were genuinely happy about the rumors of the law change and immediately crowded around her, telling her how much they appreciated what she was trying to do for their world.
Viola even got to meet many she-wolves who had been victims of rape during their heat, and she was surprised and heartbroken to find that many of them had been rejected by their own mates for it. While many were present, Sofia was not among them. She noted briefly.
In no time, the hall automatically divided itself into two sides, the she-wolves separating themselves without being told. On one side were those who supported the change, and on the other were those who were against it. Laila and Ember stood at the front of the opposing side, and standing among them were Viola’s adoptive mother and sister, who looked at her with open resentment and undisguised bitterness.
"A nobody like you cannot just crawl out of nowhere and suddenly want to change our world’s belief." Said Ember from the other side of the hall. No words could describe the anger and hate she held for this bitch who had snatched away her place right under her nose.
"When a she-wolf doesn’t have control of her own heat, what happens is up to her. Do not sentence innocent males to death for something as natural as instinct. Our males are not made to control themselves around a female in heat. They were made to claim her and get her with a pup. That is how we are made. We are not humans, we are werewolves!"
