Chapter 196: Change of law
Chapter 196: Change of law
Viola stared into Sebastian’s eyes, seeing him in a slightly different light than she ever had before, understanding now why he had never interfered in Sofia’s situation or stepped in against his cousin, and knowing that now that she had done exactly that, if Javier ever decided to retaliate, things between the two of them could get far worse.
"Then you should have let him punish me earlier..." She whispered softly, genuinely meaning every word of it. "If Javier had gotten the satisfaction of hurting me, he wouldn’t feel insulted enough to want to retaliate against you. It is not like it would have been the first time I have been punished for something."
Sebastian let out a laugh at how utterly serious his hellcat looked telling him he should have allowed his senseless cousin punish her, and unable to help himself, he reached out and pinched her cheek, squeezing it lightly.
Viola hissed and swatted his hand away, glaring at him. "I am being serious, why are you laughing? It really wasn’t my intention to cause any more conflict between you two."
"I know." Sebastian said, still smiling. "You didn’t mean to, you just can’t help but attract trouble wherever you go. Did you think I swore off my own limb if I ever hit you, just to turn around and allow another man to hit you?" He questioned, his amusement fading as his eyes settled seriously on hers.
"Viola, nobody touches my people, especially not my Luna. You are a Luna, wolfless or not, and he had no right to lay a hand on you. If anyone ever does that again, I will cut off their hands. Do not allow anyone in this pack to treat you poorly because your wolf hasn’t surfaced yet. You are their Luna and you have to make them understand that."
Viola saw the seriousness on his face as he said it and felt something soften and warm inside her. It started as a flutter in her chest that moved down to her stomach, and she looked away from him, breaking whatever spell had been building between them as she said,
"I can’t force anyone into submission if they defy me, so how do I make them respect me?" She mused quietly, looking down at their interlinked fingers. Something about how he held her hand just felt remarkably right. So right that it stopped her from her impulsive behavior of peeling the skin of her nails when anxious.
Sebastian reached out and lifted her chin to make her look at him. "I don’t want you to ever feel less than anyone in this pack, and I hate that I can’t simply tell you I will force everyone to respect you. The more I do that publicly, the more you will become a target, and your life here will be put in danger. But know this, whoever touches a single hair on you will suffer for it."
Viola absorbed his words, and with them came the realization that pack structures were the same everywhere, if an Alpha had a weak Luna or mate, that person would inevitably be used as a weapon to get to them. Which was precisely why she still found it so difficult to understand why Sebastian was giving her any real attention when she had nothing to offer him in return, no family background, no wolf, nothing. She was the most useless Luna to a supreme Alpha...
She felt his fingers touch her cheek, stroking it slowly, and she moved her chin gently away from his hand and said, "If I am going to make this place safe for myself and for every other vulnerable she-wolf here, I need your help with something."
She had thought about this ever since Sofia first told her what had happened to her and why Javier had turned against her, and she had come to a clear conclusion about what needed to be done. And having Sebastian remind her that she still held real authority over his pack members and was not just a Luna in name alone had made her realize that she could still act on it.
Not only for someone like Sofia, but for the sister she would soon be bringing here to live with her.
"What is it?" Sebastian asked.
"I want to change a rule and a law across the entire werewolf world. I want that belief, that any she-wolf who lets her scent loose during her heat season is asking to be fucked, removed entirely. I want a law put in place that states any male who touches a female without her consent during her heat season is punishable by death. That way, she-wolves will feel protected during their heats rather than afraid of them."
Viola still clearly remembered the day she had almost been attacked and raped in the forest during her heat, and how Sebastian had arrived in time to stop it, her pheromones had been the very thing that drew the danger to her.
Sebastian saw the determination burning in her eyes, and though part of him wanted to tell her that changing such a deeply ingrained belief would earn her more enemies than she was ready for, from the male especially, he also recognized that this new law would keep her safe, and he would no longer have to be worried every time she forgot to take her suppressant. With a law like that, no male would dare take his woman and get away with it.
It wouldn’t sit well with many male werewolves, and even some women who had used that same belief to set others up would push back against it, but Sebastian understood that protecting her would sometimes mean displeasing his people.
He still needed to manage the situation with the people who had witnessed him carrying Viola on his back and were now drawing conclusions, particularly his aunt Camila, and whoever else was quietly watching and wondering whether the new Luna could be used as leverage against the supreme Alpha.
Muffin had not cared in the slightest about what anyone thought, because his wolf’s approach to problems was to bite the head off whatever caused them, but Sebastian had learned from enough experience that cleaning up after his wolf form was rarely simple.
"Will you sign the agreement papers giving me permission to move forward with changing that law? I can’t take a single step toward changing anything without your name on it first." She looked at him with quiet, sincere hope in her eyes.
Among all his Lunas, Sebastian thought, looking at his wife, Viola was the first to want to make a good change. Most of his Lunas had only wanted the title and never used the position for anything positive.
Sebastian parted his lips to say yes, and then stopped himself, knowing the moment he agreed, she would likely jump up, thank him, and go straight back to her own penthouse. And he genuinely wanted her to stay a little longer, not only because spending time with her would help her wolf, but simply because he wanted her there.
So instead of saying yes, Sebastian looked away from her with a long, heavy sigh. "It will take a great deal of convincing with the elders, those stubborn old geese, and that kind of thing takes energy. Right now I am running quite low." He leaned against the back of the couch.
"Oh..." Viola murmured, not quite sure what to make of that. "But will you speak to them once you have rested?" She turned to look at him.
"Hmm." He hummed thoughtfully. "I will. The only thing that truly restores my energy is a good massage, it settles the nerves completely. But now that I am a married man, I don’t think my wife would appreciate me going to another woman for that, so I have been thinking." He looked at her with a perfectly nonchalant smile. "How about you massage me? Give me a good oil massage and I will go to the elders straight after. What do you think?"
