Chapter 192: A ride with the Alpha wolf
Chapter 192: A ride with the Alpha wolf
Viola had thought Sebastian would carry her on his back to her penthouse, but she was surprised when he dashed out of the High Tower entirely through a sliding wall window on the fourth floor that opened at the press of a button.
Her heart lurched violently with the leap of the mighty wolf through the opening, and for one genuine, terrifying moment she was completely certain they were falling to their deaths and she squeezed her eyes shut, but the mighty wolf astonished her when he landed silently and smoothly on all four paws without so much as a stumble, and then broke into a full run through the quiet afternoon streets.
Had it been anyone else, Viola would have been in a full panic at being carried away from the pack’s main building, but this was Sebastian, and he was among the very few she was beginning to trust. Even so, she couldn’t help the curiosity that grew inside her as he changed direction away from the city streets and turned toward the rural edges of Silver.
Though Silver City was advanced and strikingly beautiful at its heart, beyond the edges of the city the land gave way to rolling hills, cliff sides and dense forests, and the wolf ran straight toward them, running and leaping with a power that felt boundless beneath her. The wind rushed against her hair and face, brushing over the bruises on her cheeks.
"Where are we going?" Viola leaned down to ask as the city fell further behind them and the woods began to close in around them.
’Good question. Where the fuck are we going, Muffin?!’ Sebastian demanded internally as his wolf form had taken full control and no matter how hard he pushed, Muffin had absolutely no intention of shifting back to human form.
’I am taking us to our favorite place, the one we always went to when we got angry in the past. I want her to see it!’ Muffin replied with a brightness and excitement that clashed spectacularly with Sebastian’s fury.
’We don’t have time for this, Muffin. Shift back to human form right now. I need to speak to her, and she needs to understand the danger you have put us in by letting her ride on our back in public. Stop this right now!’ Sebastian growled, but his wolf only picked up his pace in response, and Sebastian suddenly thought he heard something and realized with a jolt that it was coming from his wife on his back.
She was giggling.
’She likes it when I leap!’ Muffin rejoiced, and launched them over another tree just to hear the sound of it again, and was rewarded immediately.
Her giggles seemed to reach right into Sebastian’s chest and quietly melt the block of cold fury that had been forming there. He was furious with her, furious that she had interfered in Javier’s business, that she had missed an important gathering that could have earned her more respect among his people and made her position more acceptable in their eyes even to those who didn’t like her, and she had missed all of it just to get herself into trouble with his psychopathic cousin.
But then she giggled again, and he leaped higher than was strictly necessary just to hear it once more.
Viola had never been this high up, that was how enormous the wolf was, and leaping over the trees carried them even higher each time, the wind rushing across her face, and she couldn’t stop the laughter that kept bubbling out of her. The ticklish sensation of the wind, the smell of trees and earth beneath them, the wild and intoxicating scent of pure freedom that came with running at this speed, she couldn’t contain it.
No wonder werewolves loved to run through open fields and had entire festivals dedicated to it. If she had a wolf of her own, she would run like this every single day without exception. There was a sense of freedom to it she hadn’t felt in awhile now. It almost felt like she had been choked in a cage and was suddenly freed.
When Sebastian’s wolf began to slow, Viola looked ahead and saw why, they had arrived at the edge of a cliff, and the wolf’s powerful run eased into a slow, careful walk until he came to stand right at the very edge of it. She instinctively tightened her grip on his soft fur, as if she feared being tossed down the cliff. Why were they standing so close to the edge?!
Viola wondered fearfully until the fierce wind hit her face full-on. She looked up, and her panic immediately disappeared as her blue eyes took in the magnificent scenery.
The sky above was the deepest blue she had seen in a long time, scattered with soft, full clouds drifting slowly across the glimmering sun, and the warmth of it settled against her cold skin like something she hadn’t realized she had been missing. She closed her eyes and drew it in, her hands moving without thought, stroking slowly over the soft thick fur of the wolf beneath her.
"This feels so nice..." Viola whispered softly as she opened her eyes again.
Below the cliff edge the land dropped away into more trees and a dense, dark forest, but above it the horizon stretched out in every direction, open and breathtaking.
"I want to get down," she told the wolf, and it bent down for her to do so.
She slowly slid down from the wolf’s back, his height still towering over her even when she was standing on her own feet while it was sitting down, its tail swishing on the ground. His head was turned toward her, silver eyes glimmering like polished steel catching the afternoon sun.
She hadn’t noticed it before, the wolf had dark fur ringing his eyes that made the silver color of them stand out even more brilliantly. It was striking, and there was something almost cute and adorable about it, though there was absolutely nothing cute about a wolf large enough to crush a person beneath a single paw without effort.
"I never knew you were this big in your wolf form, Sebastian." Viola mused softly, reaching out and pressing her hand to his nose before trailing it slowly down into the thick fur of his neck.
He leaned into her touch immediately, like an enormous, overgrown puppy, and she smiled at it. "Every Alpha I have ever come across before was not even half your size." She tilted her head, looking into his eyes. "Do you have a wolf name?" She asked softly, because she knew every werewolf carried two names, one for their wolf spirit and one for their human form, even though the two existed as one and the same. Surely the supreme Alpha’s wolf would carry a name worthy of what he was.
With such size his name would be enormous and great.
