Chapter 741: Why Not Give It a Try?
Chapter 741: Why Not Give It a Try?
Zhang Xing’s brothers couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw Mike right in front of them. It wasn’t until Zhang Xing confirmed that this was indeed Mike that they realized the truth. They had come to the racetrack this evening specifically to see Mike, but upon arrival, they were told by the track management that even they had little chance of seeing Mike, as his whole team was in lockdown at the circuit, completely inaccessible to outsiders.
So, after they arrived, they could only stand outside the track, watching the race cars zooming by on the course. They never dreamed they would actually see Mike. How could this not excite them? Mike was their idol, all of them. Unable to contain their excitement upon seeing Mike, they all rushed over to him with clothes and pens they had prepared beforehand, hoping to get his autograph.
Some couldn’t even control their tears. In their eyes, Mike was the Immortal of racing. Though currently ranked top three in the world, Mike was still young, only 22 years old. In a couple of years, becoming the world number one was highly possible. Besides, it was common for the top three to alternate victories, so Mike’s future as number one was destined. Having Mike’s autograph was a supreme honor for them!
Seeing his peers so thrilled, Huang Shi shook his head speechlessly. He reflected that, had he not met the Boss, he would have probably reacted the same way. But now, he knew that in front of the Boss, these so-called world number ones and twos amounted to nothing, leaving Huang Shi utterly unexcited.
Mike initially wanted to chat with Huang Shi but was suddenly surrounded by Zhang Xing and his group. He quickly signed autographs for these fans, then made his way out of the crowd to where Huang Shi was still casually leaning against the railing, piquing Mike’s curiosity.
Anyone else would have reacted differently; coming to the racetrack at such a late hour would mean they were either reporters or die-hard racing enthusiasts. Clearly, this person wasn’t a reporter. Why wouldn’t he show any excitement at seeing him? And taking into account what Huang Shi said earlier, Mike became intrigued by Huang Shi.
"Kid, do you still believe that sort of driving won’t result in a crash?" Mike walked up to Huang Shi and said with a smile, a smile that bore no hint of ridicule. He sensed something extraordinary about the young man before him—a young man of such calm and composure was certainly not like those who had eagerly asked for his autograph. And for some reason, Mike was especially interested in this peculiar young man.
"If I say it won’t, then it definitely won’t," Huang Shi maintained his belief without a hint of doubt and responded coolly, looking into Mike’s eyes without any ulterior motives. Huang Shi felt a measure of respect for Mike too. He could see that Mike was a pure racer, which was indeed something to be respected.
"Interesting, I’ve never heard of anyone able to drive like that without flipping the car. Can you do it?" Mike, upon seeing Huang Shi’s composed demeanor, realized the other had such confidence; otherwise, he would not make such a claim. Now Mike himself was baffled. Could this young man in front of him truly drive that way?
If it was really possible, then one lap could shave off at least ten seconds. What did that mean? It meant if he could do that, he would become an unsurpassable world number one. The gap between him and the first and second ranks had never been more than one and a half seconds!
But upon this thought, Mike again deemed it impossible. If such driving were feasible, why wouldn’t other racers do it? Besides, even when slowing down on those curves, he felt how strong the lateral centrifugal force was. Without slowing down, a car would surely flip. So, what’s going on here?
Mike was now filled with doubt and looked at Huang Shi with a baffled expression, hoping to get an answer from him.
"Why not give it a try?" Huang Shi saw the puzzled Mike and let out a slight chuckle, speaking indifferently. Huang Shi found such a reaction quite normal. Before witnessing the Boss’s driving, he wouldn’t have believed it possible either. But having seen the Boss drive in such a manner, he was convinced it was attainable.
"Alright, let’s try it. I’m looking forward to seeing." Hearing Huang Shi’s proposal, Mike immediately laughed and led Huang Shi toward his team. He was eager to find out how Huang Shi would drive and to dispel his own doubts.
Zhang Xing and the others watched in stunned silence, hardly believing what was unfolding before them. Huang Shi actually dared to stand his ground in front of Mike and even suggested a test. What was going on? To them, Mike was the Immortal, and if he said it couldn’t be done, it couldn’t be done. Was Huang Shi challenging Mike’s authority?
When they heard Mike agreeing to let Huang Shi try, their astonishment doubled. They couldn’t have imagined Mike responding so agreeably to Huang Shi’s words and even inviting him to give it a shot. Moreover, Mike led Huang Shi by hand towards the team area. What was happening? Since when did Huang Shi have such skills? It seemed impossible. If Huang Shi were that formidable, wouldn’t he have competed in world races already? What exactly was going on?
Their minds numb with confusion, they struggled to comprehend until Mike and Huang Shi had walked some ten meters away. Then they snapped out of it and hurried after them. They had to see for themselves if Huang Shi was as incredible as he claimed, capable of doing something even Mike couldn’t.
...
When they reached the team garage, Mike gave the word, and a backup car was prepared for Huang Shi to test. Huang Shi didn’t hesitate; he climbed into the car, strapped on the safety belt, put on the helmet, then familiarized himself with the vehicle’s interior. Giving his onlookers a wave, he drove the car to the starting position and got ready.
Huang Shi was very familiar with such professional race cars. He owned one himself and had competed in many events. To ensure safety, he took his time getting to know this unfamiliar car. He firmly remembered the Boss’s words: you must master the car, not let the car master you.
With Mike’s hellos, the track was now clear of other vehicles. Everything was set for Huang Shi to showcase his driving skills.
All set and ready to go, when the green lights at the starting point lit up, Huang Shi’s car suddenly shot out like a dragon entering the sea, zooming past the start line. With its bright yellow color standing out like a yellow arrow, it pierced through the crowd’s field of vision, disappearing from sight in the blink of an eye.
The spectators then looked up at the huge central screen on the racetrack, their eyes following Huang Shi’s car, but what they saw left them utterly astonished.
"Damn, is that Huang Shi!?"
"Are my eyes deceiving me?"
"This... How is this possible!?"
"How could Huang Shi possibly be driving so fast!"
...
Zhang Xing and the others stared at the yellow car on the big screen, each of them dumbfounded by Huang Shi’s driving skills. They couldn’t have imagined that after several months of absence, Huang Shi would suddenly possess such prowess—it was simply inconceivable! How could it be possible for Huang Shi to have such skills? This was way too exaggerated!
They truly couldn’t reconcile the Huang Shi they were witnessing now with the Huang Shi they knew before, as his current performance on the track was of a level only a professional racer could achieve. Huang Shi’s speed was incredibly fast; they were at a loss for words to describe their shock. Everyone was in disbelief that what they were seeing was real...
"Really interesting." Mike was also stunned by the sudden display of Huang Shi’s capabilities. Although he was the third-ranked racer in the world, he hadn’t expected such a young guy to produce such an effect. It was a surprising revelation, eliciting a murmur from Mike and a smile spreading across his face as he continued to watch Huang Shi’s car, curious to see how much more he could be amazed.
Inside the car, Huang Shi was also feeling great. After a chat with the Boss, his mindset had changed. Instead of just trying to drive well, he was now set on conquering the car. His world was now just about the car and the track, everything else was no longer of any concern to him.
The first lap was to familiarize with the track.
The second lap he began to accelerate.
The third lap was all about pushing the limits.
Soon, the three laps were completed, and after leisurely coasting for another lap, the car slowly returned to the team area. Once the car was parked, Huang Shi got out, took off his helmet, threw it into the car, and walked over to Mike.
Seeing Huang Shi approach, Zhang Xing and the others had an expression like they’d seen a ghost as they looked at him.
Damn, this was just too exaggerated!
Is this really Huang Shi?
Did Huang Shi really set this record?
...
As Zhang Xing and the others looked at Huang Shi’s last lap time on the big screen, and then at Huang Shi standing before them, they were at a loss for words. In their wildest dreams, they could not believe that what they were seeing was real. How could it be possible? Huang Shi’s last lap time was less than a second shy of Mike’s... This was just too extravagant. Was this still Huang Shi? Could it be that Huang Shi was now possessed by an Immortal? Otherwise, how could he have achieved such a result? If Huang Shi really had this level of ability, it’s possible he could rank in the world!
