Chapter 511: Return to Beijing
Chapter 511: Return to Beijing
Lin Feng finished making breakfast, and after eating with his parents, he said goodbye to them, saying he was going to Capital City with a friend to take care of some business, and that he would be back in two or three days. Lin Yiwen and Zhang Lan didn’t find this too strange. Ever since Lin Feng returned to Tianhai, he always seemed to have endless things to keep him busy. However, they were very confident in their son’s character; they knew he wouldn’t do anything reckless, so after reminding him to be careful, they said no more.
After leaving the house, Lin Feng went straight to Shen Yao’s villa. As soon as he entered, he saw several women sitting on the sofa chatting together. They had opened up to each other the previous night and now had no reservations, so Lin Feng walked over naturally.
"Leng Mei has told you, right? We’re heading to the Capital City in a bit," Lin Feng said casually as he sat down next to Shen Yao.
"Yes, Sister Leng told us. Yaoyao and I were planning to take you to the airport later," Ding Wan’er promptly responded to Lin Feng. Hearing from Leng Mei that General Meng Ping was ill, she too was quite anxious. Thus, she wholly supported the idea of Lin Feng and Leng Mei going to Capital City to see the doctor.
"Yaoyao, we don’t know how many days this trip will take, and I won’t be able to keep you company. You should go back to Yuegang first. When I’m free, I’ll definitely come to see you. If not, you can spend a few more days here during the summer vacation, how does that sound?" Lin Feng took Shen Yao’s hand, feeling very helpless. He hadn’t expected such a sudden turn of events. Shen Yao had come a long way to see him, and after only one night, they had to part. It was indeed regrettable, but he had no choice since he had to accompany Leng Mei to Capital City for medical reasons.
"It’s okay, I don’t mind. I’m planning to go back tomorrow. It’s not easy to come to Tianhai, so I’ll stay one more day before heading back, to chat with Sister Wan’er and Senior Sister Chu Meng," Shen Yao replied, satisfied with Lin Feng’s concern. She didn’t want to be a burden to Lin Feng, especially because he was dealing with an emergency this time. Although unlucky, she didn’t mind since Ding Wan’er and Senior Sister Chu Meng were here; chatting with them also made her happy.
"That’s good then," Lin Feng said, relieved to hear Shen Yao’s response. It seemed she got along well with Wan’er, which meant he could save himself a lot of worry and effort in managing their relationship. This outcome was the best possible.
"Senior Sister, after I get back, we’ll look into how to deal with the situation below," Lin Feng turned to Chu Meng and said, referring to issues he needed to discuss with her. He had been away in the Golden Triangle for over half a month and had intended to consult with his Senior Sister upon return, but the sudden trip to the Capital City meant the discussion would have to be postponed.
"Junior Brother, don’t worry about it; Senior Sister isn’t in a hurry. We can talk after you’re back," Chu Meng smiled at Lin Feng, thinking to herself how busy her junior brother was. But since he was busy with important matters, she didn’t mind waiting for him to return before making any solid plans.
"Leng Mei, let’s go," Lin Feng said, turning to Leng Mei who had already stood up, and then got up himself, ready to leave.
"Be careful on the road, and don’t drive too fast," Ding Wan’er said as she stood up, straightening Lin Feng’s clothes in a gesture typical of a caring wife, admonishing him with concern.
"Call me when you have time," Shen Yao also stood up and said to Lin Feng with a smile. Being the farthest from Lin Feng, she cherished any phone calls from him and was contented with just that.
"Alright, we’re off," Lin Feng said, turning around to lead Leng Mei out of the villa. They got into a car and headed toward the airport. Leng Mei hadn’t said a word all morning, and Lin Feng knew she was anxious, so after checking his watch, he started to gradually increase the speed of the car.
...
The plane landed smoothly at Tianjing City. Leng Mei and Lin Feng both traveled light, bringing no luggage except for the handbag that Leng Mei carried, a common accessory for women. Once off the plane, they followed the crowd and headed straight for the exit.
"Sister! Over here!" Leng Mei’s younger brother Leng Hao caught sight of his sister coming out and excitedly waved his hand to signal her. Leng Hao was only eighteen years old, but despite his youth and being just a young man, he had already grown to over one meter eighty, exceptionally tall and burly, looking so honest and simple-faced that people who didn’t know him might think he was a man in his twenties.
Leng Hao had been at the airport since early morning to pick up his sister, and now that he had finally waited for her, he was thrilled. As soon as he saw Leng Mei walk out, he immediately called out excitedly. Ever since they were little, his sister had been very kind to him, and he had always been closest to her. He had seen her in a rush over the New Year and hadn’t been able to see her since. He had been missing her for a long time, and had he not been tied up in Capital City, he would have wanted to visit her in Tianhai. So when Grandpa called him in the morning to pick up his sister, it made his day!
Leng Mei was always cold to everyone else, but she had never been anything but indulgent with this younger brother, so the bond between the siblings was very strong. Even though Leng Mei had left for Yingbo University and they had been separated, their feelings for each other had not faded but grown deeper with distance. That’s why seeing Leng Mei made Leng Hao so excited.
"Little brother!" Seeing her dearly beloved younger brother Leng Hao there to pick her up, Leng Mei felt a surge of happiness, but due to her usual demeanor, she appeared cool and detached, uttering only two words. Inside, however, she had been missing him dearly. Her busy work schedule left her no time to visit him and Grandpa in Capital City. It had been nearly two months since she had seen Leng Hao, and she had missed him greatly.
So, as soon as she stepped out of the terminal and saw her little brother there to meet her, she felt an immense joy. Right, it hadn’t been that long since she last saw him, yet he seemed to have grown even taller, and his frame looked even more imposing. He was no longer the little rascal who used to follow her around asking for sweets.
"Sister, you’re usually so busy with work, how come you suddenly came to Capital City? When Grandpa asked me to pick you up this morning, I couldn’t believe it. Sister, you’re always so busy, why did you suddenly come back? Oh, and look, Senior Brother came to pick you up too. When Grandpa told me to go to the airport to pick you up this morning, Senior Brother said he was free and came with me," said Leng Hao, pointing to the man next to him.
Leng Hao was indescribably excited to see his sister standing before him. Just the other day, he had been thinking about her, and then Grandpa sent him off to the airport to meet her. Yet, it was only after he arrived that he wondered why his usually hectic sister would come back to Capital City all of a sudden; could it be because of Grandpa Meng’s situation that she came to Capital City?
No matter what, her return to Capital City was a good thing, and that was what Leng Hao was most happy about. Thinking this, he quickly pointed to the Senior Brother beside him, excitedly explaining to his sister. Senior Brother, upon hearing she was coming back, had come along with him. Leng Hao knew all too well that Senior Brother had feelings for his sister and hoped to see her; he also wished for his sister to end up with Senior Brother, which is why he indicated that Senior Brother had come to the airport too.
"Leng Mei, that must have been a tough journey," said Yuan Kun, a tall and slender figure in a rather formal black suit, wearing gold-rimmed glasses that gave him an air of a scholar, looking pale but very approachable. Yuan Kun was tremendously happy to see Leng Mei, and when he heard Leng Hao speak, he expressed his care with elegance and brevity. After many years of being around his junior brother Leng Hao, he knew Leng Mei quite well and understood that less was more with her; keeping it simple was the best way to interact.
"Thank you." Leng Mei glanced at Yuan Kun beside her, feeling somewhat perplexed—how did he come to be here? Her little brother had always been obsessed with martial arts; after joining Yuan Kun’s school, Yuan Kun had become her little brother’s Senior Brother. When she had talked with her little brother over the New Year, all she heard was how good and powerful Senior Brother was, how he endlessly praised Yuan Kun. It was clear that her little brother wanted her to be with Yuan Kun, which made Leng Mei feel averse to him.
That was an impossibility, not only because she was now with Lin Feng, but even without Lin Feng in the picture, Leng Mei would not choose to be with Yuan Kun. Despite his appealing exterior and lack of obviously disagreeable behavior, Leng Mei always had a vague feeling that Yuan Kun had some special secret unknown to others. This strange feeling led her to be seriously vigilant around him.
"There’s no need to thank me. I didn’t have much to do, so I just came along with the junior brother," Yuan Kun replied with a smile to Leng Mei. He was well aware of Leng Mei’s character and wasn’t surprised by her cool response. However, inside he was very pleased. After so many years of knowing Leng Mei, this was the first time he had heard her say "thank you." This internal victory made him quite jubilant.
Thinking this, Yuan Kun felt very happy. No matter what, this was a promising start. In previous encounters with Leng Mei, she had never paid any attention to him; today’s interaction was already far better than ever before.
"Little brother, how is Grandpa Meng doing now?" Leng Mei didn’t want to engage in further dialogue with Yuan Kun. She was worried about Grandpa Meng’s condition and inquired urgently of Shen Hao. Grandpa had said over the phone that things weren’t looking good, and she was very anxious to know how Grandpa Meng was at the moment.
