Chapter 385: Must Have Seen it Wrong
Chapter 385: Must Have Seen it Wrong
"You old rascal, let Lin Feng come and sit down. What’s he doing standing over there?" Seeing Qian Rong blocking Lin Feng, Ding Yi quickly called for him to let Lin Feng come over and take a seat at the table. It’s so much better to chat sitting down; talking while standing just doesn’t feel right.
"Right, right! Lin Feng, please sit down." Upon hearing Ding Yi’s words, Qian Rong also realized that it had been somewhat improper and immediately gestured for Lin Feng to join them at the table. However, his eyes kept sweeping over Lin Feng, leaving Lin Feng feeling quite speechless.
During the New Year, Qian Rong had even called his granddaughter to ask her what she thought of Lin Feng from her last visit to Tianhai. Unfortunately, she had pegged Lin Feng as a capable but untrustworthy "pretty boy" scammer, good with his hands but nothing more, which utterly frustrated Qian Rong. It seemed that there was no spark between his granddaughter and Lin Feng, but since that was the case, he just needed to find a way for them to interact more. Lin Feng was a great catch, and Qian Rong would regret it on Duoduo’s behalf if she missed out on such a formidable son-in-law.
Sometimes, Qian Rong even crazily thought of luring his granddaughter over, getting her and Lin Feng drunk, and then let nature take its course to seal the deal... This shows how anxious he was.
"Elder Ding, Elder Qian, my year has been quite satisfying, thank you for your concern." Lin Feng walked over to the table and casually took a seat near Ding Yi, greeting both of the elders. Having not seen the two old men for a while, Lin Feng felt a sense of closeness seeing their warmth towards him.
"Lin Feng, how have you been lately? Why haven’t you come to visit us two old codgers for a drink or a game of chess? It would’ve been nice," Ding Yi said, increasingly pleased with Lin Feng. Over the past half-year, having gotten to know Lin Feng, Ding Yi had firmly decided that he would do whatever it takes to ensure Lin Feng married his granddaughter. And given that she had developed quite a fondness for Lin Feng, it was better to clarify their relationship sooner rather than later to avoid complications.
If it weren’t for the fact that his granddaughter didn’t know how to handle emotional matters and was too shy to explain things to Lin Feng, Ding Yi wouldn’t have needed to go to such lengths to help her. Anyway, now that Lin Feng was here, all it would take was a simple conversation at the right moment for Lin Feng to understand. Thinking this, Ding Yi’s enthusiasm towards Lin Feng grew.
"I’ve really been too busy; ever since after New Year’s, there has barely been a day without something to do, and you know, Elder Ding, I have to teach classes at the French Department. I’ve missed quite a few French classes, so how could I have had the time to join you two for meals and chess?" Lin Feng briefly explained his situation to Ding Yi. He indeed hadn’t had the time or energy to spend leisure moments with the two elderly men after the New Year as he had been constantly busy.
And Huang Shi stood obediently behind Lin Feng, dressed exactly like a typical henchman, while Lin Feng
"Lin Feng, when you’re free, I’ll prepare something and have a meal with my granddaughter Qian Duoduo, alright?" Qian Rong looked at Lin Feng and put forth his request without any hesitation. Thinking to himself that Duoduo was merely a bit hot-tempered and there wasn’t much else to criticize, Qian Rong hurriedly planned for Lin Feng and Qian Duoduo to meet. Once they saw each other in person, Duoduo might genuinely start to like Lin Feng, and since there was no chemistry yet, he had no choice but to use his old face to invite Lin Feng to a meal. For Duoduo’s happiness, Qian Rong was willing to do anything.
"Of course, but I’m not free all the time. Let’s talk about it when it comes to it," Lin Feng responded upon hearing about Qian Duoduo. He immediately remembered the formidable lady at the villa who hadn’t been intimidated by him and was quite intrigued by her. Since Qian Rong had brought it up, there’d be no issue in having a meal if he was free, although he wondered how Qian Duoduo would react upon seeing him.
"You old rascal, don’t just think about your granddaughter; today is my granddaughter’s birthday. Lin Feng, how are your parents doing these days? Let’s have a casual meal together sometime when you’re free," said Ding Yi, finding Qian Rong’s immediate mention of Qian Duoduo somewhat ludicrous. He knew that Qian Rong had been eyeing Lin Feng for a long time and that Lin Feng was indeed the most suitable for Qian Duoduo. However, today was Wan’er’s birthday, and since Lin Feng was Wan’er’s intended fiancé, it seemed a bit much for Qian Rong to bring up such a topic at this time.
But Ding Yi’s suggestion was just an offhand remark, not something he was seriously invested in. On second thought, after today, the engagement between Lin Feng and Wan’er would be clear, so it would naturally be appropriate to invite Lin Feng’s family out for a meal and for the elders from both sides to meet. With that in mind, he also invited Lin Feng to eat.
"That’s no problem at all; anytime is good," Lin Feng replied to Ding Yi, feeling a bit puzzled. Why the sudden insistence on inviting his parents for a meal? But he didn’t think much of it—it was just a meal, after all, and perhaps he was overthinking. He promptly accepted Ding Yi’s invitation.
"Lin Feng, Wan’er looks so beautiful today; you’ll see soon."
"Lin Feng, come visit us more when you have the time; otherwise, we’re just wandering around all day."
"Yes, do come and see us when you can."
"Oh, and by the way, Old Soldier mentioned that you should come to Capital City to see him when you’re free. He misses you too."
...
Ding Yi and Qian Rong were extremely happy next to Lin Feng, chatting incessantly with him, which rendered Lin Feng utterly speechless. He mused to himself how just after a single winter, these two old men had become so talkative, making him feel quite awkward. However, as the birthday party had not yet begun, he had no choice but to sit there grimly, enduring the two elders rambling on like an endless sermon.
Little did Lin Feng know, over the past six months, having seen how impressive he was, these two old men had grown incredibly fond of him, each scheming to push their granddaughters toward Lin Feng. The difference was that Ding Wan’er was Lin Feng’s fiancée, while Qian Duoduo was currently nothing of the sort. Nevertheless, Qian Rong didn’t care one bit; as long as Qian Duoduo could be with Lin Feng, it wouldn’t matter if she were a mistress, or even the fourth, fifth, or sixth woman—as in his eyes, a man as remarkable as Lin Feng couldn’t possibly be satisfied with just one woman.
Who on earth is he?
I don’t recall ever hearing of a Lin Feng.
How could he make Elder Ding act like this...
...
Seeing Ding Yi and Qian Rong behaving in such a manner, the other vice-deans and deans, who were sitting around, couldn’t help but grow curious. Just what kind of background did Lin Feng have? They heard he was supposedly some French teacher at the school, yet how could he have won such enthusiasm from Elder Ding and Elder Qian? This was utterly unprecedented; in the twenty years leading up to Ding Wan’er taking over, not a single young man had ever caught Elder Ding’s eye in the entire school, which spoke volumes about the high standards Elder Ding held for young people.
Yet today, he seemed genuinely fond of this young man named Lin Feng. What in the world was going on? There seemed to be nothing particularly special about this young man that could elicit such consideration from Elder Ding. This thought led everyone to closely scrutinize Lin Feng and Huang Shi, who was standing behind him, but no matter how they looked, they couldn’t discern anything out of the ordinary and were left filled with curiosity.
However, one of the elders suddenly recognized the man standing behind Lin Feng as the eldest son of the Huang Group, which sent shockwaves through his heart. If the heir of the Huang Group was serving as a lackey to this young man, then what could the young man’s status possibly be? Heaven! It must be a mistake, it simply had to be! That elder couldn’t believe it; the Huang Group was one of the richest and largest companies in Tianhai. It was impossible to accept that their Crown Prince would stoop to acting as a subordinate to a university teacher at a college. No one would believe such a thing!
...
After Ding Wan’er rushed back to the villa, she hid in her room, choosing her clothes and jewelry for the evening with utmost seriousness and the help of Leng Mei. Today was an important day, so she hoped to appear before Lin Feng in her most beautiful form, which would surely make Lin Feng happy as well. After repeatedly trying on different outfits and jewelry, which almost wore Leng Mei out, Ding Wan’er finally decided on the clothes and jewelry she would wear later.
Seeing Ding Wan’er so nervous, Leng Mei found it odd that the usually calm Ding Wan’er was making such a fuss today, but she didn’t think too much of it. Once Ding Wan’er was nearly ready, Leng Mei breathed a sigh of relief and walked over to the window to glance outside, wondering whether Lin Feng had arrived.
Ever since the drunken incident a few days earlier, Leng Mei had become somewhat reluctant to meet Lin Feng alone, feeling embarrassed and regretting having consumed so much alcohol, which led her to inadvertently shout out the thoughts buried deep in her heart. Not only had Lin Feng heard her, but also the neighbors had heard everything loud and clear, an outcome she never expected.
Yet, if she couldn’t see Lin Feng every day, Leng Mei felt as though something was missing. Seeing Lin Feng chatting with a few elders made her feel reassured; as long as he was there, it was all good.
But just as Leng Mei was about to turn away from the window, she noticed Ding Wan’er’s parents chatting away animatedly with a tall and handsome young man, which greatly puzzled her. Ding Wan’er’s parents were usually overseas conducting business and had only come back because Elder Ding was celebrating Ding Wan’er’s birthday. Otherwise, they would have been too busy to return. Thus, they shouldn’t really know anyone domestically—so who was this person talking to them?
Leng Mei had met all of Ding Wan’er’s friends and was very familiar with the teachers and leaders at the school. What was going on? With this thought, she vaguely sensed something amiss and turned to ask Ding Wan’er.
