Chapter 1263 - 1261 Jack Lee
Chapter 1263 - 1261 Jack Lee
After listening to Lin Feng’s explanation, the four women finally began to somewhat believe that the Locke Group might really not have stolen Cloud Fund’s research data. Thinking of this, Chu Meng couldn’t help but ask, "Junior Brother, is it really like this?"
She asked hesitantly. If it really was as her junior brother said, then this truly had nothing to do with the Locke Group, and they had indeed wronged them before.
"It’s really like this. Actually, verifying it is quite simple—just send someone to investigate. Their approach is completely different from ours. As for what to do with our R&D team, my personal suggestion is, if our research still holds value, then continue; if it doesn’t, just abandon it altogether. Research and development are inherently a race against time. It’s just that this time, the opponent moved a bit faster."
Then, Lin Feng spoke to Chu Meng, intending to comfort her. Encounters like these were unavoidable; it was a matter of bad luck. If Cloud Fund had worked a little faster, the outcome would have been entirely different.
"If it’s true that their technology was developed legitimately, then our failure is a natural outcome. I’ll think of other ways to make up for this loss. However, the Locke Group operates so radically—now that they suddenly possess such extraordinary technology, it will probably throw the entire world into chaos."
Chu Meng nodded, expressing her thoughts. If it was mere coincidence, then failure was just failure—it wasn’t a big deal. She could afford this loss! However, the Locke Group’s control over such a technology was certainly not good for the world. If they were to create a robot army, it might spark global turmoil.
But to her, it was no big deal. Cloud Fund had influence worldwide, and no matter how outrageous the Locke Group became, they wouldn’t dare touch Cloud Fund. She genuinely paid these matters little mind.
As if on cue, just as this thought crossed her mind, her phone began to ring. The caller was one of her friends, immediately bringing up the Locke Group’s press conference and suggesting they team up to oppose the Locke Group. To this, Chu Meng politely declined.
But no sooner had she ended that call than another phone call came in, this one with the same content as before. The Locke Group had become so unsettling to everyone that some were even mulling over hiring mercenaries to take down the Locke Family...
After dealing with that call, Chu Meng set her phone to silent and tossed it into her bag, paying it no further attention. She really had no energy to listen to calls like these. She wasn’t interested in targeting anyone—her focus was wealth creation; everything else was secondary.
"Lin Feng, who do you think it could be? There are only so many top-tier scientists in the world working on new energy sources."
"I’m not sure either, but maybe you can try investigating. If you can’t figure it out, I’ll think of something."
"Alright, I have agents inside the Locke Group. Taking a few pictures shouldn’t be too difficult."
"Senior Sister, what kind of corporation is the Locke Group, really?"
"It’s a military-industrial complex, a Prominent Family in the armaments business. That’s not the point, though—the point is that this family has no bottom line. In earlier days, leveraging their status as an arms family with their own equipment, they robbed countless banks. Laws were looser back then, and that’s how they managed to grow."
"They’ve done such things? And what are they like now?"
"They don’t consider consequences—profit is all that matters. It’s said that many terrorist organizations now source their supplies from the Locke Family."
"..."
...
Later, Lin Feng and the women began casually chatting. No one could guess who the Locke Group had brought in to develop such a revolutionary energy source. With Chu Meng’s explanations, Lin Feng, along with Ding Wan’er and the others, finally understood what kind of family the Locke Family truly was. A family with no moral bottom line whatsoever—it was no wonder so many influential figures were thrown into a frenzy after the press conference and started blowing up Senior Sister’s phone.
But as they were chatting, suddenly another phone in Chu Meng’s bag rang, instantly causing her to freeze. This was her private phone, and fewer than ten people knew its number—including Lin Feng, Ding Wan’er, and the rest. Outsiders would have no way of knowing it. Why was it ringing now? It was truly strange.
"Hello? This is Chu Meng. Who’s speaking?" With the call connected, Chu Meng spoke politely. Right now, she was genuinely curious about who would call her on this number.
"Miss Chu Meng, I’m Jack Lee. Do you remember me?"
On the other end of the line was a very young voice. Judging from the voice, he wasn’t very old, but Chu Meng couldn’t recall him at all, so she responded casually, "I’m sorry, I’ve been too busy to remember. Who are you again?"
"It’s normal for you not to remember, Miss Chu Meng. Let me remind you. A year ago, I proposed a deviation theory for new energy development and approached you, hoping to join your research team. But I was rejected. Recently, I was recruited by the Locke Family, and the RT Energy Box you’ve seen? I was the one who developed it."
The young voice on the other end sounded calm and confident, emanating immense pride. And he had every right to be proud—his energy project had solved Earth’s energy crisis, something no one in history had accomplished before. His achievements were unprecedented, and he had the credentials to boast!
"What? It was you! How is this possible? How could you have succeeded? Back then, my expert panel concluded that your theory was unachievable!" Upon hearing this, Chu Meng let out a startled cry. She had never expected the person on the other end of the line to be the one who had created the energy box!
Now she finally remembered. About a year ago, a man under thirty had approached her asking for investment to build a laboratory. At the time, she had consulted her experts, who deemed his energy project impossible, and thus she had dismissed it. But how could it have turned out to be a success now? It was beyond belief!
"Miss Chu Meng, your research group took the path of using antimatter to generate energy, which is indeed the mainstream direction. My research, however, focused on ultramicro particle fusion. Being unconventional doesn’t mean it’s impossible. On the contrary, I succeeded and even produced a finished product. From this perspective, I am far ahead of you."
Jack continued speaking confidently, his tone dripping with arrogance. It was as if he’d called specifically to taunt Chu Meng, mocking her for overlooking such a remarkable talent once upon a time.
"If you keep talking like this, I’m going to hang up." Chu Meng was enraged by his tone, her face visibly changing in color. She angrily rebuked him. Jack might be a genius, but calling her just to say such trivial things? There had to be more to it; surely he wasn’t just reaching out to brag.
"Don’t hang up, Miss Chu! I do have something important to discuss with you." Hearing her threat to end the call, Jack quickly panicked and pleaded. His voice suddenly turned somber, filled with regret. "Miss Chu, although my project succeeded, there’s now a problem. I’ve already fled, and I’ve made it to Tianhai. I need to meet you to discuss what’s coming."
"Where are you right now?" Chu Meng, intrigued, immediately asked. She also wanted to meet Jack to get a better understanding of the RT Energy Box and the situation.
"I can’t meet you yet. The Locke Family is still after me. Once I find a safe location, I’ll contact you again." Jack Lee briefly explained before hastily hanging up, sounding as though he feared being discovered.
After putting the phone away, Chu Meng found Lin Feng and the other three women all looking at her, their expressions curious. They wanted to know who had just called her and what had transpired.
"The caller was a Chinese-American scientist named Jack Lee. He’s the one behind the Locke Group’s energy box project. He’d approached me earlier, but the experts in my group dismissed his work as impractical, so I ignored him. Who would’ve thought he’d later be recruited by the Locke Family and actually succeeded? What a mess!"
Speaking to Lin Feng and the other three women, Chu Meng’s tone was one of helplessness. If she had known Jack could truly succeed, how could she have let him slip away and give the Locke Group such an edge, creating so much trouble for herself?
After venting, Chu Meng turned her gaze to Lin Feng and asked, "Junior Brother, Jack said he wants to meet me and discuss matters with me. What’s your take?"
This was Chu Meng’s primary question. Logically, with Jack’s success, Locke Group should be treating him as an invaluable asset. Why had he fled, and why was the Locke Group pursuing him? Something about this didn’t add up.
Ding Wan’er, Leng Mei, and Shen Yao also shifted their attention to Lin Feng, curious to hear his thoughts. This situation certainly defied normal expectations, and they were eager to hear Lin Feng’s analysis.
"Actually, it’s quite simple. For the sake of confidentiality, high-value individuals like Jack would often be placed under heavy surveillance, leaving them with no personal freedom. Considering what you’ve told us, it’s easy to deduce that Jack’s situation within the Locke Group must have been terrible. Perhaps his research hit a bottleneck he couldn’t resolve, and it forced him to flee. Or maybe he uncovered something he was never meant to know, which led the Locke Family to target him."
"As for why Jack reached out to you? That’s even simpler—Locke Group is a formidable organization. Most people wouldn’t dare cross them. But you’re different. You are the Sect Leader of Cloud Fund, an organization even stronger than Locke Group. Even if they find out Jack is with you, there’s nothing they can do about it."
Lin Feng calmly answered Chu Meng’s questions. All evidence suggested that Jack was in a precarious situation. His reasons for defecting from the Locke Group likely stemmed from one of the above scenarios—though determining which one would require meeting Jack in person and getting the full story.
