Chapter 121: Just Seventeen Days
Chapter 121: Just Seventeen Days
"Junior brother, how long has it been since you last saw our master?" The last time Chen Guisheng parted from Lin Feng, he only remembered that their master hadn’t changed in appearance. He forgot to ask everything else. This time, Chen Guisheng immediately seized the opportunity to ask Lin Feng, eager to know about their master’s recent condition.
"It hasn’t been three months since Master and I parted ways." Lin Feng answered calmly, his mind still tangled with the question of just how old his nominal master was.
"What! You just separated from Master less than three months ago?" Upon hearing Lin Feng’s words, Chen Guisheng’s eyes widened in surprise. Having parted only three months ago meant that Lin Feng should have an idea of where Master was by now. Three months wasn’t exactly a long time, but neither was it short. He probably hadn’t left that place yet, which meant Chen might have a chance to find Master and see him once more.
"Then, junior brother, please tell me, where was Master three months ago? I wish to see him." The thought of possibly meeting their Master again excited Chen Guisheng greatly. Nearly 60 years had flown by, and if he missed this chance, he might never see Master again, especially considering he was almost 80 years old himself.
If he could see Master again, he could die in peace!
"I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. Master was living with me on an island before. After he sent me away, I never found that island again." Lin Feng answered seriously. He was fully aware of his senior brother’s current thoughts and why he was so emotional. But if Lin Feng himself couldn’t find the island, how could he return and ask Master about various matters? Would he really have waited until today?
"Oh, that’s too bad. I really thought I might be able to see Master once again." Hearing Lin Feng confirm this, Chen Guisheng accepted that it must be true. Although he was very disappointed, it was an unavoidable reality. If even his junior brother couldn’t find it, he certainly wouldn’t be able to, no matter how much he wanted to.
That’s not right, though. Junior brother said he used to live on an island with Master. How long did they stay together?
I knew from before that Lin Feng, my junior brother, was the only disciple formally acknowledged by Master, which was different from nominal disciples like myself. But having lived continuously with Master on an island—that’s significant. I only spent about ten days with Master, and that brought me to my current level as a national hand in the medical arts.
If junior brother had lived with Master all this time, how powerful must he be?
Just how long did he stay with Master...
"Junior brother, how long did you stay with Master?" Unable to contain his curiosity, Chen Guisheng asked, fearing he might suffocate from his own envy. Junior brother’s medical skills were already impressive, not to mention Master’s ring. Exactly how long had he been with Master?
If Lin Feng had spent a long time with Master, then surely he must have mastered all of Master’s medical techniques and would be a peerless genius. Only that would explain why Lin Feng was so extraordinarily talented!
Master was such a legendary figure. Any person who spent time with him would become powerful, and I am a living example of that. My junior brother here is an even more fitting example.
Just how long...
"Not too long, I suppose. It was about five years." Lin Feng mentioned offhandedly, remembering the life on the island that was deeply etched into his memory. If it weren’t for his good fortune, he probably wouldn’t have made it back. He couldn’t understand why his senior brother was so fixated on how long he’d spent with Master, but it wasn’t a secret, so he might as well tell him.
"What! Five years? Oh my heavens!" Chen Guisheng couldn’t control his emotions anymore. Five years! The junior brother had stayed with Master for five whole years. Good grief, that was utterly unfair. He had only been with Master for little more than ten days and achieved what he had today. And yet, Lin Feng had spent five years with their teacher! Didn’t that imply that Lin Feng had learned nearly everything the old man knew? To what extent had this junior brother mastered Master’s skills?
Ah, if only Master had allowed me to stay by his side back then, I would surely be more skilled than Lin Feng is now by a huge margin. I remember once asking Master about it; he said there were several senior brothers and sisters like me who had spent just a few days with Master and were then made nominal disciples.
But this junior brother named Lin Feng managed to live with Master for five years! It goes without saying, he must be Master’s true sole disciple. Otherwise, Master wouldn’t have let Lin Feng stay with him for so long, let alone give him that ring.
Spending five years with Master, one can imagine how powerful he would become. If he weren’t amazing, it wouldn’t make sense.
Because who was their Master? He was a man who could do anything!
"Senior brother, how long did you spend with Master?" Hearing Chen Guisheng’s astonishment, Lin Feng felt curious himself. What was the big deal about spending five years with Master?
"I was with Master for only seventeen days. Can you blame me for being surprised, for envying you for having five whole years with Master?" Chen Guisheng felt particularly wronged. Why hadn’t Master allowed him to follow? If he had, things might have turned out very differently!
"Ah, just seventeen days?" Upon hearing Chen Guisheng’s answer, Lin Feng suddenly thought of Senior Sister Chu Meng. She seemed to have spent very little time with Master as well. Could it be that Chen Guisheng and Chu Meng were both nominal disciples like Master had once mentioned?
"Brother, you must be a titular disciple of Master too, right?" With this thought, Lin Feng asked to confirm whether it was as he suspected.
"Yes, wait, what do you mean by ’you must be too’? Have you met other people?" Chen Guisheng suddenly grasped the implication in Lin Feng’s words. He must have met other senior brothers or sisters; otherwise, he wouldn’t have used the word ’too’. After all these years, no one had contacted him. Had it not been for meeting this junior brother, he wouldn’t have known anything at all.
"Yeah, I have met... a senior sister!" Lin Feng replied calmly. He had a vague feeling that the siblings listed on the business card Master gave him might all be his titular disciples; otherwise, it wouldn’t be such a coincidence.
Moreover, he was puzzled about what his nominal Master was thinking—why didn’t he let these titular disciples contact each other?
The more Lin Feng thought about it, the more confused he became. He couldn’t figure out why!
"Ah, this..." Chen Guisheng didn’t know what to say. Hearing his junior brother’s words, there seemed to be other senior brothers or sisters, but the question was, why hadn’t anyone contacted each other? What was the reason for this? Was it Master’s decision, or what was going on?
Now he was completely baffled too, just like Lin Feng, totally clueless about the matter.
Lin Feng let his gaze wander, casually observing the bustling crowd outside, hoping to find some inspiration.
But just as his eyes shifted in another direction, towards the emergency department treating ordinary people, he unexpectedly saw a familiar figure stepping off an ambulance. Then, she threw herself onto a stretcher, crying. The doctors couldn’t pull her away no matter how they tried, leaving her to her grief, creating a scene of utter chaos.
Lin Jie! What was she doing here? And who was on that stretcher?
Although surprised to see Lin Jie following the ambulance to the emergency department of this hospital, Lin Feng had a favorable impression of this young woman with the same surname. He immediately took out his phone and dialed Lin Jie’s number to find out what was going on. It took a long while before he heard Lin Jie’s crying voice on the other end.
"Brother Lin, Brother Lin..." Lin Jie managed to utter ’Brother Lin’ twice before she broke into uncontrollable sobs and couldn’t continue.
"Don’t worry, Lin Jie. Take it slowly, what happened?" Lin Feng saw that the scene across from him was really chaotic and that Lin Jie was in a state of panic, unable to speak normally. What could have happened to make Lin Jie cry like this?
Last time they met, Lin Jie was a bright and cheerful person. How could she have turned out this way today?
And more importantly, who was it on that stretcher?
"Disciple, what happened?" Chen Guisheng, standing beside Lin Feng, was extremely puzzled by Lin Feng’s behavior. Why had his demeanor suddenly changed, and why did he make a mysterious phone call out of nowhere? Had there been some urgent matter? Otherwise, his junior wouldn’t be acting like this!
But what could possibly make his very capable junior brother so nervous?
"It’s nothing. I just saw a relative of mine being brought here by an ambulance to the ER, and I called to ask what was happening. It seems the situation is quite serious," Lin Feng responded briefly to Chen Guisheng’s questions and refocused his attention on the phone, listening to Lin Jie’s voice, which was filled with sobs and nothing else.
What? His disciple’s relative had been brought to this hospital by ambulance, and he had seen it with his own eyes?
Thinking about this, Chen Guisheng looked through the glass wall towards the entrance, where he could barely make out an ambulance. The people looked like tiny black dots, and it was impossible to discern any faces or details.
My eyesight is still very good; I haven’t had any problems. So why can’t I see clearly when my junior can?
From such a distance, even if one used an electronic telescope, it might be difficult to make out facial features. Yet, my junior says he could personally recognize his relative, which means he could see their features. Good heavens! Are those even human eyes? To see faces so clearly from such a great distance? That’s even better than an eagle’s vision!
"Disciple, could you really see them clearly?" Chen Guisheng asked again, not willing to give up. He couldn’t believe that a normal human’s eyesight could be that sharp; it was simply beyond comprehension. People might believe in superheroes from TV shows, but encountering such a person in real life? No one would believe it.
