Chapter 18 – Fierce battle
Chapter 18 – Fierce battle
On another battlefield, the ground seemed to have been plowed by an Inferno Blast. The cathedral was reduced to half its structure, with ruins and debris everywhere. Balda's statue lay crookedly on the ground, one of the dragon horns broken.
Amidst the chaotic ruins, the dense sounds of explosions and weapon clashes could still be heard.
After Sylvie's knights had killed all the priests, they had already retreated from the area under the leadership of the new Royal Guard Captain, Goodbye.
The battle of a top-tier Earth Knight could kill them with just the aftermath.
Claremont was nearing his limit. The strange man before him was nothing short of a monster.
He seemed to feel no pain, attacking with full force each time. Even though his hand was bloodied from the recoil, his arm veins shattered, and muscle fibers torn, his attacks remained as fierce as ever, unaffected. This was still within the realm of understanding.
What truly made Claremont unable to resist was the monster's reaction speed, far surpassing that of an Earth Knight. His beast-like intuition almost saw through all of Claremont's attack trajectories.
"Heh heh heh, old man, how many more moves can you withstand?"
Carter's eyes were cruel, a mad grin on his lips. The greatsword in his hand danced with afterimages, slashing and chopping swiftly and fiercely, each strike numbing Claremont's hand and shattering the stone bricks beneath his feet.
Dazzling Battle Aura blossomed on their blades, one silver, one red, interweaving.
Their Battle Aura levels were close, making it hard to tell who was superior. Each collision caused their blades to separate.
Carter pressed forward relentlessly, steam rising from his body, his exposed skin turning a bizarre red, like a boiled shrimp.
Facing Carter's storm-like assault, Claremont retreated step by step. His aging body eventually revealed a flaw, his movements a beat too slow to block the incoming diagonal slash.
In the critical moment, the experienced Claremont adjusted his body, managing only to slightly sidestep, hoping to trade an arm for a chance at survival.
It was the best choice.
Carter noticed Claremont's intention but didn't care, his smile growing even more frenzied.
A one-armed knight would be an even better toy, providing more pleasure in the cat-and-mouse game.
"Clang."
At that moment, a greatsword flew in from the side, narrowly blocking Carter's diagonal slash, only to be knocked away by the recoil.
Claremont reacted immediately, seizing the opportunity to roll away and distance himself from Carter.
"Tch—"
Missing his attack, Carter spat in annoyance, glancing at Sylvie, who had intervened.
It seemed Marton was dead, a useless failure. The Pope had entrusted him with such an important task, and he had failed.
"Young Master... this old servant is incompetent..."
Claremont murmured, half-kneeling on the ground, leaning on his longsword, his expression somewhat defeated.
Sylvie bent down to pick up his knocked-away greatsword, walking slowly to Claremont's side, patting his shoulder in comfort:
"Don't blame yourself, Claremont. This guy has been modified into a Templar Knight, not something to be judged by common sense."
As he spoke, Sylvie's gaze coldly assessed Carter.
"He doesn't even feel pain, just a pathetic killing machine created by the Holy See, not even human."
"A Templar Knight, is it?"
Claremont was somewhat enlightened. He had heard of the Templar Knights in the Royal Capital but never had the chance to see one. Now, having faced one, it was indeed extraordinary.
"Interesting! Very interesting! Heh heh heh, kid, you sure know a lot."
Carter laughed grotesquely, looking at Sylvie with interest.
Information about the Templar Knights was absolutely confidential, known only to a select few.
For this Eaglehold Lord to identify his abilities at first meeting, he must be someone with many secrets.
If he could capture the Eaglehold Lord and present him to the Pope, it might be a great achievement.
Carter thought, his gaze becoming increasingly dangerous. Now it was two against one; without going all out, capturing the lord alive would be difficult.
But if he used that power...
Carter hesitated, but soon his eyes firmed up again.
Becoming a Templar Knight meant he had long since put life and death aside.
He believed the Pope would take care of his family.
These thoughts flashed through Carter's mind in an instant. In his vision, the old knight and the Eaglehold Lord were already charging at him together.
"Berserk!"
Carter roared, a crimson blood mist erupting from his body. His height and build suddenly expanded, his knotted muscles barely contained by his armor.
Thick black mane sprouted all over Carter's body, his knuckles thickened, nails lengthened, transforming into sharp wolf claws in an instant.
His head had already turned into a snarling, menacing wolf's head.
"Overestimating yourself!"
Facing the knights' swords slashing from both sides, Carter howled to the sky, his claws as hard as metal, blocking Sylvie's heavy slash with one hand and grabbing Claremont's blade with the other, fending off both attacks with just his claws.
Claremont twisted his arm, leaping back, his longsword slipping from Carter's massive claw.
"Is this... a Werewolf?!"
Claremont exclaimed.

"It seems Balda's Holy Church's modifications to the Templar Knights are even more perverse than we imagined."
Sylvie sneered coldly.
He also kicked Carter's waist, creating distance, while focusing his attention on Carter's information.
[Name: Carter (Berserk) (Temporary)]
[Identity: Templar Knight]
[Strength: Earth Knight Level 44 (41-50)]
[Others: Omitted]
...
Just a temporary skill?
Sylvie instantly made a decision in his heart.
"Claremont, his Berserk has a time limit. If we hold him off, we can win."
As soon as he finished speaking, Carter was already upon them, an iron claw sweeping across. Sylvie immediately rolled to dodge, the claw smashing the statue behind him with a "boom."
Sylvie got up, watching Carter charge again, feeling apprehensive. Without hesitation, he activated the Dragon Crystal Barrier on his Hero's Armor and cast the Bastion of Glory on himself.
A golden dragon roared behind Sylvie, the holy shield of glory merging into his body.
Sylvie leaped, activating Fearless Charge, dragging his greatsword, crashing into Carter's embrace, engaging in close combat.
Claremont knew the lord was creating an opportunity for him, so he focused, using his mobility to find Carter's weaknesses, launching harassing attacks.
"Annoying insects!"
Carter roared, feeling his claws striking a shell, his claws dulling.
What surprised him even more was that the Eaglehold Lord, though weaker in strength compared to his Berserk state, wielded a sword that seemed simple yet contained a powerful sword force. The thick sword force was like a thousand-pound boulder, entangling him tightly.
Plus, the old knight would occasionally sneak in an attack.
This drove Carter nearly insane, overwhelmed with frustration.
The longer he used Berserk, the more life he expended. He couldn't wait any longer.
More blood mist surged from Carter's body, his eyes glowing red, his menacing wolf head gaining wrinkles, the hair on his neck turning white at a visible speed.
He was aging rapidly, but his speed and strength multiplied at this moment.
"Die!"
Carter roared, his massive claw wrapped in a fierce wind, smashing into Sylvie's dragon shield, while simultaneously kicking Claremont from the side.
Sylvie's dragon shield reached its limit and shattered instantly, while Claremont was kicked into the ruins, his fate unknown.
Carter weakly caught his breath, the massive loss of life force making him appear hunched. He grabbed Sylvie from the ground, lifting him by the collar of his armor.
"Originally, I wanted to present you to the Pope..."
Carter's blood-red wolf eyes glared viciously at Sylvie, his mind nearly devoid of reason.
"But now, I've changed my mind. I'm going to eat you!"
"That depends on whether you can swallow me! Do-or-Die Will!"
Facing Carter's gaping maw, Sylvie shouted, his blood boiling in an instant.
With his heart's beat, a surge of power spread through his body. In a flash, he swung his fist, as large as a sandbag, smashing into Carter's jaw.
Carter staggered from Sylvie's heavy punch, seeing stars, a few bloody wolf teeth flying out.
With the boost from Do-or-Die Will, Sylvie's speed, strength, and healing ability improved significantly. In contrast, the weakened Carter could no longer pose a threat.
"So you wanted to eat me, huh? I'll knock all your teeth out!"
In mid-air, Sylvie lifted his knee, pressing against Carter's head, then, with the momentum and gravity, slammed Carter's head into the ground with a thunderous crash, viciously prying open Carter's wolf mouth and pulling out all his teeth.
Without giving Carter time to react, Sylvie picked up his greatsword and decapitated Carter with one swift stroke.
"This time, I've learned. For you servants of the gods, only cutting off your heads will keep you in line."
