Evading the Hero’s Party with Full Effort

Chapter 94

Chapter 94

Ch.94 The Capital Is in Danger!

I boarded a passenger ship with Scarlet’s group and Nekhuf’s party, heading toward the Old Continent.

Now was the time to discuss the real plan.

So I called everyone to my cabin—but…

Ugh, just look at the atmosphere.

Based on Scarlet’s previous talk and the letters they sent, they don’t seem to hate me…

Then why do they all look so displeased?

“Brother… what’s going on?”

Nekhuf bravely broke the tense silence—and instantly, every gaze in the room locked onto him. Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead.

Scary, isn’t it? Terrifying?

Feeling sorry for Nekhuf—now getting a taste of the constant glare I endure—I cleared my throat and spoke.

“Ahem… I gathered you all here to deal with the King of the Dead.”

I unfolded the map as all eyes turned to me.

“First, the King of the Dead will attack the Imperial Capital.”

The main reason players suffer so much in the ‘King of the Dead’ scenario is this: you must defend both the Capital and the Seal Stones simultaneously.

If the endless waves of undead and spirits overwhelm the Capital—game over.

If you fail to stop the destruction of a Seal Stone—also game over.

“So… what should we do?”

Scarlet asked, worry flickering in her eyes. I replied casually:

“If Cecilia stays in the Capital, it won’t be a major issue. Of course, she’ll need protectors.”

The King of the Dead’s minions are weak to divine power.

With Cecilia’s buffs, allies’ attacks will land critical hits—making her presence essential.

Without her, the difficulty would skyrocket into hellish territory…

Which is precisely why I didn’t just loiter around the convent for nothing.

Every move was a setup for this moment.

“Wait… Father Hans? Then what about me?”

Her pupils trembled violently, as if she couldn’t believe her ears.

“You’ll stay in the Capital. I’ll go and guard the Seal Stones.”

Everyone nodded in agreement.

“Master, so I’m going with you, right?”

“No? You need to stay in the Capital too.”

Leah’s face twisted in shock. “Whaaat?! Why?!”

“You specialize in fire magic! Even if undead are weak to divine power, nothing melts them faster than your spells.”

She opened her mouth to protest—“But it can’t be helped, Leah. Your magic is the best for crowd control.”

Scarlet’s words made Leah scowl.

“Well… I guess that’s true…”

“Then I’ll be guarding the Seal Stones?”

At Mia’s question, I nodded.

“Yes. You and Nekhuf. Nephert stays in the Capital.”

“A wise choice.”

“Right?”

Nephert glared at me, eyes wide.

“Hold on! Why do I have to be separated from Nekhuf?”

“Well… you’re weak. And you’d only get in the way when we fight the King of the Dead.”

“What?! I’m not weak!”

She puffed up her chest, but her expression betrayed her anxiety.

“If you’re as strong as a Hero, I’ll let you join.”

“Forget it! Just let me stay somewhere safe with Nekhuf!”

“Sorry, that’s not happening. Nekhuf is a true hero now.”

Defeating Set, the Desert King, means Nekhuf qualifies as an exceptionally powerful character by game standards.

I couldn’t let someone like that sit idle.

“Ah… I’m a hero…”

Nekhuf’s mouth hung slightly open—he clearly hadn’t expected that.

Was he touched?

I couldn’t see his expression clearly since he’s blind, but his stunned silence suggested he might’ve been moved.

Just then, Scarlet spoke up with a wounded look.

“And… what about me?”

“You’ll protect Cecilia.”

“Huh?”

Her eyes widened in disbelief.

“The Capital already has holy knights and Leah. Do I really need to stay too?”

“Yes—because of the liches. Even if Cecilia’s divine power is strong, you’re the only one who can intercept liches attacking from long range.”

In truth, the sheer numbers of death knights and liches are extremely threatening.

“B-but… why would liches even appear? What’s going to happen?!”

I understood their shock completely.

Liches and death knights are famously elite dungeon bosses.

Even if their numbers are limited, the idea of multiple such powerful enemies swarming humans defies common sense here.

But everything changed the moment Lord Roy, the God of Death, appeared.

Now, anyone who dies—or falls into death—becomes the enemy.

I stated this fact plainly:

“We’ll be fighting every being who has experienced death. First, we must purify the Capital’s cemetery—because the resurrected dead there inflict massive damage.”

A heavy silence fell.

Their expressions were stunned—except Cecilia, who remained calm, likely because she knew the prophecy. Everyone else looked grim.

“What? Every being who’s died? Brother, is that really true?”

“Master… really?”

“I can’t believe it… that means…”

I answered their horrified stares calmly:

“Yes. The calamity brought by the King of the Dead and the God of Death is a war against the dead themselves.”

An absurdly massive scale of disaster…

That’s the final DLC: ‘King of the Dead.’

“Is such a thing even possible?” Cecilia added quietly.

“Our enemy is a god.”

“Ah…”

Silence filled the room—and I inwardly winced.

Did I reveal too much truth at once?

To me, it’s just a familiar game scenario—no big deal. But to them? It’s terrifying.

“Don’t worry too much. It’s still better than ‘Dragon War,’ where undead dragons appear.”

My ultimate reason for saving Aria was this: if ‘Dragon War’ triggers, humanity must win—or it’s instant game over.

And what happens to slain dragons?

They return as undead dragons.

Though weaker than their original forms, they’re still far stronger than liches or death knights.

“Aaah…”

Everyone looked utterly devastated, as if their souls had left their bodies.

“B-but… he’s still weaker than the Demon King, right? Father Hans?”

Cecilia tried to sound cheerful, forcing optimism into her voice—but everyone else remained despondent.

“Not really. The main story’s Demon King was basically a tutorial.”

“What’s a tutorial?” Leah asked curiously.

I grinned.

“You know, like a demo opponent—just to give you a taste of how the game ‘Destiny’ works.”

“Ah…”

Seeing their despair, I smiled reassuringly.

“Don’t worry. I’m here. I’ve killed the King of the Dead so many times in-game, I’m sick of it. Just follow my lead, and we’ll be fine.”

Straightening my shoulders with confidence, I began issuing detailed orders.

***

One month later, the Old Continent.

On a clear, bright day, dozens of robed figures gathered in a forest, chanting in unison.

—“O Death! O Death! You who are equal to all mankind! ♬”

Deep-voiced men intoned.

—“O Just One who rights the world’s wrongs~ ♪ Save us!”

Women’s high notes joined in chorus.

—“Save us!”

Their hymn neared its end—when Davinus and Selena appeared.

Dressed in black cardinal robes, Davinus surveyed the crowd with arrogant pride and began:

“My beloved brothers and sisters! Today is a day of glory!”

—“O God!”

—“O King!”

Some fanatics wept at the sight of Davinus and Selena.

—“Sob… The time for vengeance against those cursed wretches has finally come!”

—“Bring them ruin!”

—“Avenge my family!”

“Our King—the one chosen by God—shall descend into her body today. Speak not of vengeance. Today is a day of celebration.”

Davinus gave a slight nod—and a robed woman stepped forward from the crowd.

She carried a red velvet cushion, upon which rested a dark violet orb.

As she knelt, Davinus approached slowly and lifted the orb.

“Selena, I ask you: by God’s command, will you permit the King to dwell within you?”

Selena closed her eyes gently and bowed her head.

“Use me for this sacred task, for the sake of God and King.”

Her quiet but resolute voice made Davinus’s nose sting.

What Selena was about to do… was utter personal annihilation.

After all, surrendering one’s body to another is terrifying for anyone.

“I understand your will.”

He stepped closer. Selena remained kneeling, head bowed, hands raised above her head.

“May God’s blessing be with you…”

As he placed the orb onto Selena’s palms, a powerful violet light erupted, flooding the surroundings.

For several seconds, radiant violet beams shot in all directions.

As the light slowly faded—a sudden gale blew, and the sky darkened rapidly.

“Hahahaha…!”

A harsh, grating voice rang out.

Selena rose and shouted fiercely:

“Fwahahaha! I have returned, my people!”

The voice emerging from her lips was unlike any before.

No—it wasn’t even a woman’s voice anymore.

It was deep, raspy, and unmistakably male.

“By God’s decree, I, Roy de More, shall command the specters of this world!”

He raised his hand toward the sky—the violet energy coalesced into the shape of a sword.

A long blade, too heavy for one hand to wield comfortably.

Slowly, Roy turned the sword upward—and a beam of dark violet light shot into the heavens.

Thus… the King of the Dead had returned.

***

On the ship’s deck, the wind blew against my face as the continent finally came into view beyond the horizon.

Not much farther to the Imperial Capital now.

We were so close I could almost see the grand palace with the naked eye.

Good. I’d have been exhausted if we’d arrived late.

If I had to name the single most crucial character at this moment, it would be Cecilia.

Had she not been in the Capital when the King of the Dead resurrected, the damage would’ve been catastrophic.

Perhaps it was relief that made me lower my guard—when suddenly…

—“Look at the sky!”

—“Seriously? Is it going to rain?”

The clouds weren’t just overcast—they were unnaturally dark.

It was as if daylight were turning into night.

—“Is a storm coming?”

—“Even so, it’s way too dark!”

—“And there aren’t even any clouds!”

“This… could it be?”

The sky, clear and bright just moments ago, had plunged into sudden darkness.

It was the omen signaling the dead’s resurrection.

And if that was true…

“The Capital… the Capital is in danger!”
