Chapter 1304 - 1303 - Armies are Overrated

"Ha ha ha! The Frey Clan is finally off its high and mighty pedestal!" Wine was spilled as a young man drunkenly shouted in a room full of people smiling with strained looks. While there were women and men to entertain the guests, even they felt nervous.

He was clean shaven and had long black hair loose over his shoulders. His fine robes were now stained with wine but it was clear he had been drunk for far too long as even the most slovenly person had sobered up and wanted to leave.

They could not as the young man was the young master of the Silver Crow Sect. They also had no idea why he was so happy with the news that arrived earlier. Their spies had relayed that something had gone grievously wrong with the Inheritance of Death.

It was only once he was drunk that they were horrified to learn the young master had orchestrated an attack on the people trying to go through the trials. While within an Inheritance such actions could be acceptable, external assault was heavily frowned upon.

Part of it was that some Inheritances could completely expel all survivors and prevent any future attempts. It could also self destruct and with the power of Divine Realms, it could literally devastate the entire layer!

Only a supreme fool would take such actions.

Compounding the fact was that the Frey Clan was well known for their power now. They had successfully overcome the threat of a Sovereign Tier all on their own!

Still, he was the young master of the sect. They could not oppose him even in his idiocy. No one there would stand up to him nor betray him as their Oaths would prevent it.

Some tried to distract themselves when all froze. The feeling in the air had changed and then many summoned jade stones from their storage treasures. Messages were being relayed as weapons were quickly brought out.

They were under attack.

The drunken young master seemed annoyed by their enthusiasm to leave his celebration.

"Where are you all going? Our forces are not only unrivaled, but we have peak grade 7 formations! There is nothing to fear!" His words were not entirely wrong. Their alliances allowed them to procure more powerful formations but Law Grade eluded them.

It was simply too expensive.

Maintaining formations took intensive resources as the grade increased. Thus, they employed a robust army to support it. It was the standard practice of every power.

The people in the hall, however, really wanted to leave. Some were about to try and give an excuse when the flow of Qi drastically changed. Screams were suddenly clearly heard as shockwaves shook the walls.

The young master finally seemed to sober up. His disheveled appearance only became more pathetic as he panicked.

"What is that?! What are those idiots doing?!" Everyone was on the same page but before any could leave, the double doors at the top of the stairs shattered into kindling! Why were the formations not working?!

The hall was not a simple gathering place for the sect but a special building for the inner and core disciples to use. In times of crisis, the formations should trigger to reinforce and secure the building.

Yet, they just saw the doors break as if they were simple wood.

The sound of 2 pairs of steps were heard as the dust kicked up slowly settled in the pin drop silent room. Some had splinters in their bodies from being too close to the doors but it was hardly an injury.

Eventually, 2 figures were revealed and many had their eyes go wide in terror.

A voluptuous woman in pristine white robes with hair of gold looked at them with eyes that shifted color but were so cold that everyone felt their spines freeze.

The other woman was in golden robes tinged in black with molten gold eyes that looked at them all like they were food! The aura on her made it clear she was a beast but the most shocking thing was their condition.

There was not a scratch on them! The fact they were in front of the group in the hall meant they had breached the outer defenses, crossed several open yards with training fields, and under the noses of the Radiant Tier overseers as well!

The highest cultivation in the room was only high Crystal Tier but they were sweating as they felt the aura of the pair.

"Radiant Tiers!" Someone said the obvious but it still mystified them as to how the pair was there. Even if they personally were unharmed, they should have needed an army to breach their barriers!

"Ah, there he is. That is the one, Sister Qing." The beastly woman suddenly pointed at the young master and he felt his heart leap into his throat.

"I see, so it was him. It seems he really is a petty bastard from over a century ago. I think he gave up after being humiliated time and time again but I always remember that face." Qing sneered at him and he suddenly recalled waking up in the medical ward of the Frey Clan.

It was before the cipher had been granted to Lind Frey.

He awoke in a comfortable bed and the various women and men attending to the injured cultivators made it clear where he was. He had failed back then!

He had been ordered to get a legacy or powerful artifacts for the sect and instead he had been turned away at the barrier! He had not even gotten inside!

He tried to stir up trouble. He tried to make it seem like the mismanagement of all the people led to the various injuries and deaths. It was not an invalid statement as the Frey Clan could not tell no to everyone trying to get at the Inheritance.

Despite the harsh conditions of the Icy Path and the acknowledged land granted to the Frey Clan, the Inheritance was beyond their lands and ability to monitor all paths.

The implication would be dismissed by most but it was an opening he knew he had created. He felt proud of his quick thinking only to be slapped in the face by the Inheritance itself!

It issued an artifact that allowed the Frey Clan to prove they were the final say on admittance! Why had the spirit waited until he tried his stratagem?!

His anger had festered until his father had told him of the discovery of another Divine Inheritance! That one under their control!

No one knew about it because it was inside the special realm of their cliffs!

The instant he understood the nature of the Inheritance, an idea took root. He could not dismiss it but he needed someone totally loyal to him to pull it off.

It took over a century and a lot of planning to finally pull it off.

He had been overjoyed when the news began to spread. He heard that Lind Frey had not been heard from in days too! Had the spirit taken its anger out on him or being tied to that artifact caused damage?

It would have been a massive bonus and he wanted to celebrate!

Now, he found the very wives of Lind Frey calmly staring him down like he was a bug!

"How dare you come here?! My army will reduce–" Qing broke into laughter that looked enchanting while Kora merely looked amused at him.

Why were they laughing?

The other people in the room were also looking at him as if he was especially dim.

"Armies are overrated, you spoiled brat. Your defenses are impressive but it seems you scorned the lessons the demons learned fighting the soulless. Were they beneath you or simply too expensive to employ?" His face twisted in irritation and confusion. What were these wenches talking about?

"That is impossible? You are not Fiends nor like the soulless! You cannot consume that energy!" One of the women who was almost an elder of their sect stood up. Her well muscled form revealed she was a warrior but Kora merely summoned an artifact.

Instantly, emerald Qi filled the room and array after array broke.

"My husband is fond of saying that the greatest weapon is knowledge. Thus, your defenses, while not bad, were built on faulty assumptions that no one could replicate the effects of the soulless. The demons do not assume that at all." Qing walked slowly as many weapons, artifacts, and even the lighting arrays collapsed!

How were they doing that?!

"It is not consumption! The Qi is being converted!" The young master was not able to keep up. How could conversion ruin their arrays? How was any of it possible?

"Your actions have consequences, and your father has washed his hands of you for various reasons. It seems the Inheritance spirit reclaimed the artifact from him." Those words brought a whole new level of shock to everyone.

They lost the Inheritance artifact key?! Why?!

"W–w–we outnumber them! We are Crystal Tiers! We can take–" He was about to bring his people under him when he was struck from behind! Normally, his robes would protect him better than any armor but now a sword was coming out of his gut!

"You killed us all you fool!" The same elder from before now stood behind him. Her sword was only metal now but it was more than enough. She had struck true into his crystal!

It was not only his body but his soul was dying! Without an intact crystal, his soul had no anchor to convert itself for escape!

Why? Why was the world against him? The darkness closed in as he cursed the world for not simply bowing at his feet as it should.
