Chapter 57
Chapter 57
As the early morning rays leaked through the sheer curtains of his hotel suite, Alexander awakened from his sleep, slowly waking up from the deepness of a peaceful sleep.
The delicate sheets stuck to his body, unwilling to free him from their warm hug.
He flickered his eyes open, adjusting to the gentle glow that danced upon the room's graceful decor.
With a languid stretch of his arms, he took satisfaction in the pleasant feeling of his muscles awakening, slowly dispelling the remnants of sleep's enchantment.
His hand went off to Camilla's side on the bed, his fingers brushing against the cool sheets.
His brows creased slightly, a glimmer of confusion and longing passing through his eyes.
"Camilla..." he called out softly, but his voice was met with silence.
He sat up, his hands moving up over his face, rubbing his fatigued eyes.
As they finally opened fully, he sighed, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed and standing up.
He moved toward the balcony, pulling back the curtains in hopeful anticipation, expecting to find her standing there, gazing out at the captivating city skyline.
However, to his disappointment, the balcony stood empty, void of her presence.
With a sigh of resignation, he gently closed the curtains once again.
He then proceeded to the bathroom, hoping to find her presence within its tiled walls. But, just as before, there was no sign of her.
Returning to the bedroom, he looked around, desperately seeking some clue or answer for her sudden disappearance.
The fact that she was nowhere in their hotel suite only deepened his perplexity, causing his chest to tighten as an unknown fear crept over him.
In a rush of panic, he reached for his phone from the bedside drawer, intending to call her.
To his surprise, the sound of her ringtone echoed from the nearby drawer, on her side of the bed.
His breath caught in his throat as he hastily wrapped himself in a comforting robe, its cloth embracing him like a reassuring touch.
As he moved through the suite, his footsteps echoed lightly on the glossy floors while he pondered his next move.
Thinking if he should go out into the hallway to search for her or head to the lobby for clues to her whereabouts.
Just as he reached out to twist the doorknob, it turned on its own, and the door swung open.
And there she was, holding two wooden sticks of grilled meat skewered on a stick.
For a moment, time stood still as she froze, surprised to find him waiting there, their gazes locking in an incidental meeting.
Like a deer caught in headlights, she hesitated, the aroma of the sizzling delicacy permeating the air between them.
The surprise on her face slowly transformed into a warm and genuine smile as she approached him.
"Morning," she greeted, her voice filled with affection.
With a slight stretch of her toes, she leaned in and planted a gentle kiss on his lips.
A sharp exhale escaped him as a wave of relief washed over his body.
"Where have you been? Why didn't you take your phone?" he asked, his voice tinged with worry.
His eyes fixated on her, apprehension lingering in his gaze, as if afraid she might disappear into thin air if he allowed himself to be distracted even for a moment.
"I just went out to check out the hotel... and I completely forgot to bring my phone. I'm sorry," she apologized, extending a stick of grilled meat toward him.
His brows furrowed in a mixture of puzzlement.
"And where did you get this?" he inquired, accepting the skewer from her hand and casting his gaze upon the delectably grilled meat.
"I took a little stroll around town and stumbled upon one of the local shops. They call it 'souvlaki' here," she explained with a hint of excitement in her voice.
"Want to give it a try?" She asked as she was about to take a bite of her own skewer when Alexander swiftly seized it from her hand, causing her mouth to drop in surprise.
"Hey!!!" she clamored, a mix of surprise and annoyance in her tone.
"That's mine!" She groaned, reaching out in an attempt to reclaim her skewer from his grasp.
"Give it back," she protested, her determination evident in her voice.
However, Alexander remained unshakable, holding the skewer just out of her reach.
"No, it's not good for you," he stated firmly, his tone a mix of concern and care. Her eyes rolled in exasperation.
"You're not a doctor, and you don't get to decide what's healthy for me. Just give it back," she puffed stubbornly, her arms folded across her chest in defiance.
But Alexander shook his head, resolute in his decision.
"Sorry, I can't do that. We don't even know how it was prepared or what ingredients were used," he explained, watching her pout.
"But I'm hungry," she grumbled, her frustration evident.
Folding her arms and pouting, she looked up at him, waiting for an answer.
"Then I'll order something else for us to eat," Alexander suggested, trying to find a midpoint.
However, she crossed her arms and gave him a flat look, her decision unwavering.
"No, I don't feel like eating hotel food," she replied, her answer leaving no space for negotiation.
Alexander let out an exasperated sigh, rolling his eyes at her persistent defiance.
"Fine, then let's go out and find some breakfast. Is that okay?" he suggested, hoping to find a middle ground.
Camilla's face lit up with a victorious smile at that, nodding her head enthusiastically in agreement.
"I'll go get changed," she said, trying to move past him
However, he gently held her wrist, halting her in her tracks.
"What?" she questioned, turning back to face him with raised eyebrows, waiting for an explanation.
He released her wrist and placed his hands on her shoulders, looking deeply into her eyes.
"Next time you feel like taking a stroll, no matter where it might be, please let me know so we can go together," he said, his words laced with seriousness.
But instead, a sluggish, playful smile slowly spread across Camilla's face as she gazed at him.
"But you looked so tired, especially after all the things we did last night... I wanted you to have your rest," she replied, her words dripping with flirtatiousness.
Playfully batted her eyelashes, as she leaned forward slightly, captivating him with her seductive charm.
Alexander's heart missed a beat, his cheeks flushing.
"Fine... but we're not in Los Angeles anymore, so please remember to take your phone with you in case of any emergency," he said, trying to retain a serious tone but Camilla chuckled, finding his concern endearing.
"Emergencies like getting kidnapped by a psychotic villain?" she joked with laughter in her voice.
However, her laughter lessened when she saw Alexander's serious and concerned expression.
She licked her lips and nodded. "I'm sorry... I promise to always remember to take my phone with me, just in case, although I trust nothing will happen," she reassured him.
Alexander relaxed slightly, his face softening as his gaze turned tender.
He reached out, gently pulling her closer and planting a gentle kiss on her forehead.
"Thank you," he whispered tenderly before releasing her and Camilla turned and walked away to get dressed for their outing, while Alexander watched her, his eyes fixed on her until she vanished into the bathroom.
His mind couldn't help but think about the irony of her playful remarks and how they sometimes reflected real or impending situations and shook his head at her cluelessness.
If only she knew that there was a real threat, a psychotic villain who posed a danger to his family and, by extension, to her.
Perhaps then she would understand his concern.
Suddenly, the beeping sound of his phone broke his train of thought.
He glanced at the screen, finding a message notification from an anonymous sender which read, "You should have let her have the souvlaki, it's really good."
Shock washed over him as he immediately recognized the sender to be Red Saint.
How did he possibly know about him not letting her eat the souvlaki she brought in a while ago?
Swiftly scanning the hotel suite, he scoured for any sign of surveillance cameras, his mind racing with a sense of urgency.
"We need to get out of here," he mumbled to himself, his voice filled with determination.
"Camilla... hurry up, we need to leave now." His tone firm and urgent.
