Chapter 17
Chapter 17
Alexander's eyebrows rose in surprise at Camilla's threat, but he was not intimidated.
He let out a chuckle and shot Camilla a quick glance before returning his attention to the road.
"Is that so?" He said with a hint of amusement in his tone.
"I didn't know that your talents extend beyond heartbreaks, to physical harm as well," he said, his tone laced with sarcasm and a hint of amusement.
A smirk played on his lips as he looked over at her, noting the redness on her cheeks from anger. He gave her an innocent smile, waiting for her reaction.
"Stop the car," she said in a commanding tone.
He pretended to not hear her, "Pardon?" he asked, casting a quick glance in her direction.
Her frustration grew as she noticed the hint of amusement on his face.
"I said, stop the car Alexander!" she repeated, her voice now tinged with annoyance, her emphasis on his name indicating her growing irritation.
With a sudden jolt, he slammed on the brakes, causing Camilla to be jolted forward against her seatbelt.
"What the-" she began, but decided against finishing her sentence as she quickly stepped out of the car once he turned off the engine.
"Stronzo!(Asshole!)" She exclaimed, using an Italian curse word to express her anger.
"Solo perché ho detto che dovresti fermare la macchina, non significa che dovresti tentare di uccidermi.(Just because I said you should stop the car doesn't mean you should try to kill me.)" Camilla scowled as she walked away from the car.
Her heels clicked loudly against the asphalt pavement as she angrily stalked away.
"Camilla!" Alexander shouted after her, stepping out of the driver's seat to follow her.
"Wait up..." he called out, taking long strides to quickly close the distance between them.
He reached out to grab her arm to slow her down, but she pulled away.
"Non toccarmi!(Don't touch me!)" She exclaimed, her voice sharp and her tone clearly indicating her anger and frustration.
"What?" He said, his brows furrowed in confusion, trying to make sense of her statement.
"I said, don't touch me," she repeated, her glare growing colder as her anger intensified.
His expression softened as he realized his mistake and a sheepish grin spread across his face.
"Oh, ohh, yeah right. Sorry about that," he said, giving her an apologetic smile.
She huffed in response, about to continue walking when he called out to her again.
"Come on Camilla." He urged, gesturing back towards the car.
"What now?" She snapped, stopping then turning back to him.
"Can you please come back to the car ?" He pleaded, his tone filled with concern and sincerity.
"No." Was her blunt reply.
"Thank you for driving me this far," she said firmly. "But I'll call an Uber to pick me up. Now go home and rest or do whatever else you have planned for today." She stated curtly.
"I don't think you'll be getting an Uber." He said simply, a hint of a smug grin playing on his lips.
"And why is that?" She demanded. Her arms crossed stubbornly over her chest, her gaze piercing.
"If you're concerned about me being alone on this deserted road, then let me assure you that I'll be fine," she stated, looking at him closely.
"No...no, that's not it." He replied, his expression changing slightly.
She cocked her head slightly to the side, "Then what is it?"
"You left your bag in the car, which means you won't have your phone to call an Uber," he explained, his tone light and friendly.
"So..." he trailed off, letting the words hang in the air between them while he took in her appearance.
With a look of irritation, she muttered under her breath as she walked back to the car, "Bastardo presuntuoso...(You cocky bastard..."
After arriving at the vehicle, she retrieved her bag, slammed the door shut, and set off on foot once again, leaving Alexander standing there with a confused and concerned look on his face.
"Where to now?" he called out, but she simply replied with a terse "Home."
Come on, let's be realistic. It's unlikely that an Uber will come to this location. Why don't you just get in my car and let me give you a ride?" Alexander suggested as he walked up alongside her and maintained a comfortable distance between them.
"I appreciate the offer, but I'll just call my office and request a driver," She replied, not breaking her pace.
"That's a good plan, but it could take some time for the driver to arrive," Alexander pointed out, trying to be considerate of her situation.
She came to a sudden halt, turning to face Alexander with a look of anger and frustration.
"What's your problem?" She demanded, her fists clenched tightly at her sides.
"Can't you just let me be?" She added, her voice filled with annoyance.
"Ever since that morning with you at Houston Grande, my entire life has been in disarray," She said, her voice filled with rage as she glared at him with intensity.
"I've been struggling to put everything back together, and you think it's some kind of joke to make light of the situation?" She exclaimed, her tone growing increasingly agitated with each word.
Alexander realized that he had crossed a line, seeing the fury in her eyes.
He felt a weight in his chest, as if he had been physically struck, and a pang of guilt washed over him.
"Camilla, I'm sorry," Alexander said, his voice cracking with emotion. But his apology fell short for her.
"No, you're not," she retorted, her gaze hardening and her lips forming a tight line.
"I am. I deeply regret teasing you and causing you distress," Alexander insisted, his apology genuine and heartfelt.
Despite his words, she looked at him with suspicion, her eyes narrowing and her expression darkening.
"And...?" she prompted, waiting for him to say more.
"And I apologize for holding you by the waist, I only wanted to protect you from those crazy journalists," Alexander said, his voice low and apologetic. But she was not satisfied with his explanation.
"You are not my boyfriend, fiancé or husband that I would need your protection. Besides, I am perfectly capable of handling such situations on my own," She replied, her tone cold and dismissive.
"I understand," Alexander said, his gaze dropping to the ground, letting out a quiet sigh.
The tension between them began to dissipate, and she let out a sharp breath.
Alexander looked up from the ground to see her expression had softened and her eyes no longer held the same anger.
"Can we please get in the car now?" He asked softly.
She gave a stiff nod and they walked back together in silence.
"Can we talk about that journalist who kept shouting about me wanting to sue you?"
"Who do you think gave him that information?" Camilla asked, breaking the silence that had settled between them once they got in the car.
"I mean, the whole thing was private," She added, her eyes glancing in his direction, as she waited for his response.
"Yeah, that's true," Alexander nodded thoughtfully.
"But don't worry, I'll take care of it," He said, with a reassuring smile before starting the car.
"Are you sure?" Camilla asked, her tone filled with skepticism as she looked at him with a wary expression
"I give you my word," Alexander said, his voice filled with sincerity as he flashed a reassuring smile. He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, driving the car.
Camilla studied him for a few seconds, her expression still skeptical before turning her gaze away from him and looking out the window, watching the passing landscape.
"I just want my life back to normal," She whispered to herself, her fingers tapping restlessly against the window beside her.
Hearing her words, Alexander couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness. He cast a glance at her, and a melancholy smile graced his lips.
