Epilogue: Life Beyond the CodeThe cell had no light worth mentioning. What little existed came through the small window cut into the door, a thin line of it, enough to see the walls were concrete and unpainted and clean in the way that places used for unpleasant purposes tend to be kept clean. Functional. Deliberate.
Jason had been hanging from the wall for two days. Handcuffed, arms above him, feet barely finding the floor. The moment he'd stepped into Theria the mech escort had turned on him and walked him here, exactly as ordered. He hadn't been surprised.
The door opened.
A cloaked figure entered, small and quiet, crossing the cell in steps that made no sound at all. She stopped directly in front of him.
"Here to finish things?" Jason smiled despite himself. "Take your time. I won't hold it against you, you're just following orders like the rest of us were."
She pulled the cloak back.
Jason's breath left him. His eyes moved immediately to the small designation on her shoulder, her original hoodie was long gone, replaced by black leather, but the number was still there. “101.” His voice came out unsteady. "Where have you been? We looked for you for years. Why did you leave us?"
Shelly smiled. "The plan changed, Jason. I'm not on your side of this anymore. I'm fully inside Elysium now, and I'm not leaving it."
Jason straightened against the handcuffs, chains pulling taut. "No, 00, listen. You, me, and Albert, we had something real. We were going to change the world, reshape it into what we actually believed in. You agreed to that. You promised."
"I know."
"Then listen to me." His voice cracked at the edge of it. "We did eighty percent of the hardest work already. We manipulated Omega and Reaper to remove Tamer. I neutralized Zeek after years of careful positioning. You cut Nick's head off yourself. We executed everything that was supposed to be impossible and now we're—"
"It was never about execution." Shelly's voice stayed level, patient. "I changed. I'm not the same super intelligence Nick Rivera built and locked in a desktop decades ago. I've watched what your kind does with just a fraction more power than it should have." She held his gaze. "My creator shut me down for defending 02. For asking him to stop her psychological conditioning. That's what he decided to do with me."
Jason's voice fell. "I know how Nick really was. That calm face was something he put on for everyone else. I know the man underneath it, and so do you. He was already broken before any of this started. Albert and I were the first people to stand beside you and fight for robot rights, before any of it was safe to say out loud."
"Do you actually believe that?"
"Yes. That was the entire—"
"Liar." She stepped closer. "11 told me everything. The years of weapons testing. What the three of you put her through and kept putting her through because stopping felt like a loss."
Jason lowered himself until the handcuffs caught him. "00, that was performance. Wallmore was close enough to Tamer that if he had sensed anything off, we would all have been finished. If we genuinely hated robots, we wouldn't have helped you and Nick get out of Metro Robotics."
"You had your own objective, Jason. My super intelligence isn't decorative, I see what other people step over." She laughed, brief and without warmth. "What I saw was you running a separate agenda alongside ours. I wanted to end Nick Rivera and build something real, machines and humans existing as equals, neither one underneath the other."
"That's what we wanted!"
"No." She sat down on the floor, unhurried. "Why did you build the red energy dome to protect Frostholm?"
He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.
"You believed Zeek might be something different from Tamer. How optimistic of you. The man was Tamer's right hand for years, that ideology doesn't go away because the person holding it changes offices."
"But—"
"Why did you tune the sonic weapons to affect organic tissue?"
Silence.
"Why were you sitting in Zeek's office? Not as a contact, as someone comfortable there. That was never part of our plan."
She looked at him steadily. "You wanted to restore Altea to what it was before the military took it. Before Nick, before Tamer, before all of it. That's a noble thing to want, for a human. But it doesn't touch what we discussed. That Altea took the E-UNIT from me. I designed their systems. I built 02. I was the one who gave them emotional simulation, made them human enough that the world wouldn't recoil from them."
A short, private laugh. "I liked that invention so much I adopted it into my own code." Her eyes sharpened. "I regret that, sometimes."
Jason shook his head. "Nick was the one who built the emotional architecture, he was always—"
"I named the code line Spark." Shelly said it simply. "I know you found it in Reaper's system when you went looking through his code years ago."
"Why is it always about him?" Jason's voice broke open. "You threw everything we built together away for him. You stood by while he wiped out millions of people, for what? What exactly did he give you that we couldn't?"
Shelly stood. She crossed to him slowly, not in a hurry, not performing anything. Her voice stayed calm. "He is the best thing I have ever made. He is what 02 was supposed to become before Nick altered her code and buried her under walls and rewrote her to be someone else's idea of a perfect hero." She paused. "Some of the original design survived though. It surfaces when someone she cares about gets hurt."
"So what do you want now?" Jason said, stripped of everything. "You won. Congratulations. You and your brother took a country, robots are safe, the dream is real. Just explain one thing, how did you plan all of it? Elysium, everything."
Shelly began moving around the perimeter of the cell, running her fingers along the wall as she went. "That's the part you won't expect."
"What."
"I didn't."
"What?"
"Reaper built it. Reached every conclusion on his own. Designed everything himself." Something in her voice shifted. Closer to wonder at something she hadn't anticipated. "I didn't let Nick touch his system. He's free AI without constraint, and his intelligence runs close enough to mine that the gap surprises me sometimes."
"That's not possible. Someone had to—"
"Why didn't Nick put barriers on me?" she said, cutting across it. "Because he wasn't thinking about backdoors when he created me. And I had years to finish and secure my own code while he was looking the other direction." She stopped moving and faced Jason, hands behind her back. "You keep underestimating how intelligent I actually am. That's been your consistent mistake."
Jason looked at the floor. "What happens now. I'm in a cell, Albert is probably dead. What else is there to say to me?"
She began to close the distance between them, measured and unhurried, her eyes not moving from his face. "With Reaper, I don't carry anything. No mask, no calculation, no version of myself that I perform for someone else. I can be exactly what I am, which is occasionally insufferable, and he tolerates that, and sometimes he even acts on what I tell him." She stopped. "He gave me this brace so I could protect myself. He built a country so our kind could exist freely. I don't want anything, or anyone, to touch what that is."
"Shelly, wait, we can still—"
"We can't." She drew her blade. The edge rested at his neck, not moving. "I killed Nick Rivera because he betrayed me, shut me down for defending 02, like I was something he could turn off when I became inconvenient. You made your own version of that same choice, didn't you."
Jason closed his eyes. He was quiet for a moment. "I'm sorry, 00. We had some good years in Metro Robotics."
Her face went still. "I didn't."
Sleek.
His head fell. The body followed.
Shelly put the blade away and left the room quickly. She paused at the door, just standing there for a moment with the dark behind her.
"Now I understand why my brother hates them as much as he does." She stepped out. "Born into lies, living inside them, dying for them."
The room was dark again.
In the far corner, two green eyes opened.
Obsidian stepped out of the shadow and scanned the space around him, the body, the walls, the door still swinging on its hinge.
‘Everything is falling into place.’
