Chapter 246: Heartbroken
Chapter 246: Heartbroken
"And I never would have returned to this city had it not been for my cousin’s wedding, but I never expected to see you again. I had people look everywhere, but I couldn’t find you until I saw you at the wedding."
Natalia could see the boundless sincerity in his dark eyes.
"When you couldn’t remember me, I was deeply hurt, but I felt like I deserved it. I regretted not coming to you immediately until you left, and I didn’t want you to hate me if you remembered everything, so I decided to build new memories with you. I wanted to fulfill the promise I made to you even though you don’t remember it."
Her eyes clouded with glistening tears once again, but she let out a sigh.
"So what do you expect from me now?" she asked calmly.
"Please, allow me to make it up to you," he pleaded softly.
She looked up at him but didn’t say anything.
"Please?"
Natalia moved backwards from him. Turning around, she wiped the tears in her eyes before uttering coldly, "I’ll need to think about it."
She had grown to like him very much even without remembering all the things that had happened in the past between them. He was kind and sweet, and every time she spent with him, she’d completely forget about the heartbreak that plagued her heart with Peter.
And that night on their date, she had felt a sweet warmth being with him. Time passed by without her realizing it. She had been the one to give him the time limit, but she had felt a deep reluctance to part with him gnawing at her heart. And when he’d kissed her...
It was unlike anything she’d experienced before, and it wasn’t just about the fact that he was a great kisser. She’d felt her heartbeat drumming in her chest, her legs had gone weak, and she felt strangely dizzy in the heart-fluttering sensations that filled her heart. She was more than aware of what these feelings were.
She had always thought she was still hung up on Peter, unable to forget him. She thought her feelings for Peter were still very strong, that no one would be able to pierce through her heart. Christopher had just asked her for one date, just a single date, but little did she expect he’d not just make her heart flutter but sneak his way into it as well.
She’d begun to fall in love with him.
With him, whatever she’d felt for Peter faded away like a wisp of smoke.
Perhaps it was the subconscious part of her heart that used to have feelings for him in the past that recognized him and quickly evoked feelings for him. She wasn’t certain, but she’d been very certain of letting go of Peter because her heart now beat for someone else. However, after recalling everything, she no longer knew what to think.
In the past, she had really liked Christopher. He was a guy whom she had a silent crush on but had never voiced, someone she always looked forward to seeing every day coming into school, and she had been hurt that day he’d turned his back on her and left in the library.
"Natalia..."
"Please leave, Mr. Grayson," Natalia uttered coldly.
Christopher opened his mouth to speak but then decided against it. He lowered his head and turned around to leave quietly. He understood that recalling everything might leave her in a state of confusion and she’d need to sort her thoughts out, so he didn’t insist on staying. He’d give her the time and space she needed.
As she heard the sound of the door, Natalia shut her eyes, letting the tears stream down.
She went over and sat by the edge of the bed, letting out slow breaths to calm herself before wiping her face.
Her gaze fell onto the breakfast tray he had brought with him while coming in. There was a glass of sobering juice that’d also help her with the hangover from all the alcohol she’d had the day before, along with that a soft and mild breakfast.
Natalia stared at the tray for some time before looking away.
Actually... she was scared. Not long ago, she’d gotten over the pain from losing a man she really loved, only for the one she’d found anew to have been someone who’d hurt her from the past as well.
Internally, she knew that the reason she cast Christopher away wasn’t because she was still upset about their past, but because she’d found herself realizing that she wouldn’t be able to stand the hurt of another heartbreak. Perhaps she had suddenly realized his importance in her heart; she had realized that he was someone she was falling deeply for.
She was deeply afraid of giving her heart to him completely. Perhaps the past was just an excuse for her to avoid getting hurt again.
However, she couldn’t help but recall his words and the sincerity in his eyes as he said them.
And feeling the flutter in her heart again, she knew it would be dangerous for her heart if she let herself fall for him even deeper.
She knew she was being a coward for not giving him a chance to make things up to her, but the memories had triggered a fear of hurt in her; she wasn’t able to see it in a carefree manner anymore.
If by any chance he left her again, she would be left painfully heartbroken.
As the disappointed look in his eyes flashed in her head, she felt a pang in her chest.
Natalia got up from where she was sitting and headed into the bathroom to freshen up.
After some time, she emerged with a towel around her waist. Her hair was slightly damp as she continued to wipe it dry when her phone suddenly rang piercingly in the silent room.
Natalia looked over at her phone lying on the table by the bed. She strode over, and her face lit up immediately she saw the name of the person calling her. She quickly picked up the phone.
"Guess who’s back?" the familiar female voice came from the other end.
"Celine!" Natalia exclaimed happily.
