Chapter 1954 Expectations
“Since Miss Du insists, then I have nothing more to say.” Fang Zilan said, turning to the door and announcing loudly, “What you are looking for is right here…”
Before she could finish speaking, Du Ruohan lunged at her to cover her mouth. "What are you doing?"
"Every wrong has its perpetrator, and every debt its debtor," Fang Zilan said coldly. "What they're looking for is on you. Why should I be detained here with you?"
Du Ruohan paused, "I'm telling you not so you can tell others..."
"Why is that?" Fang Zilan interrupted Du Ruohan, her expression shifting. "I'm just afraid..."
She didn't continue, but Fang Zilan interjected, "What's there to be afraid of? To die a violent death like Miss Fu Mingyue?"
Du Ruohan remained silent, seemingly in agreement. Fang Zilan, while using her plum blossom sword to pry open the door of the Buddhist hall, said leisurely, "Miss Du, you shouldn't have left your last words to me."
"If I die, you..." Du Ruohan began, but Fang Zilan interrupted her, "No."
Du Ruohan asked in surprise, "Do you know what I'm going to say?"
"No matter what it is, I will not agree." Fang Zilan glanced at Du Ruohan. "If you die, I will just pretend that nothing happened and that I know nothing."
“You…” Du Ruohan gritted her teeth, but Fang Zilan raised an eyebrow. “I’m just like this, what can you do about it?”
Du Ruohan turned her head away and heard Fang Zilan say, "I'll count to three, then the door will open and someone will come. I won't care what you say or do then."
"I know." Du Ruohan's voice was very soft. Fang Zilan stuffed the outer garment into her hands. "But I will protect your life and let you walk out alive."
Du Ruohan looked at Fang Zilan in disbelief, "Why?"
"The Zhuge family is not innocent; in fact, they are deeply involved, aren't they?" Fang Zilan abruptly changed the subject. Du Ruohan opened her mouth, but before she could say anything, Fang Zilan said, "Ayu will likely have many sad things to do in the future, and I don't want you to be one of them."
"Didn't you say you weren't interested in Lord Zhuge?" Du Ruohan blurted out, but the moment the words left her mouth, she vaguely sensed something was amiss.
"Believe it or not, Ayu and I have a life-or-death bond," Fang Zilan said calmly. "As a friend, if we were in each other's shoes, I think he would do the same for me."
Du Ruohan's expression was complicated. Fang Zilan drew her sword and counted in a low voice, "One, two, three."
Before she could finish speaking, the door shattered into pieces and collapsed with a crash. Although Du Ruohan was prepared, she was still shaken and staggered a few steps, almost falling to the ground.
The monk Fang Zilan had just encountered at the door was now holding a knife, followed by a group of menacing figures surrounding the entrance.
“It seems I was right. Master, these hands of yours are indeed not for copying scriptures or sweeping.” Fang Zilan smiled slightly, and the monk pointed his knife at her. “Likewise, Miss Zixiu.”
Du Ruohan, who had slowly walked behind Fang Zilan, stared blankly at the purple figure in front of her. "Tell me, who is she?"
When she saw that Fang Zilan had her face covered with a veil, she assumed that it was because she was the wife of the heir and had many inconveniences when traveling, so she was just trying to hide her identity. Who would have thought that she was actually Zixiu?
"Miss Du, you've never even heard of Zixiu's name, yet you dared to spend so much time alone with her in a room?" The monk burst into laughter, and the crowd behind him joined in the jeers. "There's nothing I can do, Miss Du is just that easy to fool." Fang Zilan said with a smile, but the smile on her face, hidden behind her veil, had long since vanished.
"Is the rumor true?" Du Ruohan stared intently at Fang Zilan, as if trying to discern something beneath her purple robes, but Fang Zilan replied, "I know where what you're looking for is. In exchange, I want to know who the person who contacted me is."
“Naturally, it’s that lady from the Fu family.” The monk said matter-of-factly, “You saw Fu Mingyue’s body the day it was sent back to the Fu family.”
“A monk does not lie. If you, Master, are unwilling to tell the truth, I can only play along.” Fang Zilan’s expression turned cold. The monk smiled and said, “If you want me to tell the truth, Miss Zixiu will have to show some sincerity.”
Li Shengxuan put down the memorial in his hand and said calmly, "It was Qi You who requested to stay in the southeast."
"Your Majesty..." The Empress Dowager couldn't help but erupt, but was stopped by the Grand Empress Dowager. "I only have one question for Your Majesty: what exactly are Your Majesty's intentions regarding the case of Prince Rong'an?"
"We'll do what needs to be done," Li Shengxuan said casually, but the Empress Dowager's expression changed. "The case of Prince Rong'an has far-reaching implications. The southeast is no different from a den of tigers and wolves. Qi You is still young. How could he possibly handle it?"
"Still young?" Li Shengxuan repeated the four words, with a half-smile, "When I was the same age as Qiyou, I had fought bandits and guarded the northern border. Back then, no one said it was impossible."
The Empress Dowager paused, thinking that Li Shengxuan was going to bring up old grievances. Before she could refute him, she heard him say to himself, "If Qiyou wants my position, then nothing is impossible."
"What did Your Majesty say..." The Empress Dowager looked at Li Shengxuan in disbelief. Even though they all shared the same sentiment, the way he said it carried a completely different meaning.
He allowed them to have such ambitions, and even didn't care that they had such ambitions.
Li Shengxuan looked with interest at the Empress Dowager, whose face had turned pale, and the Grand Empress Dowager, who remained as steady as a mountain. "Did I say something wrong?"
"If Qiyou cannot..." The Empress Dowager heard her own voice, deep and still, "What will Your Majesty do?"
"The Empress Dowager seems to have far too little faith in Qi You." Li Shengxuan composed himself. The Empress Dowager took a deep breath and asked again, "If Qi You is incapable, what will Your Majesty do?"
"Although I've allowed Qiyou to remain in the southeast, I haven't abandoned him completely," Li Shengxuan smiled slightly. "If Qiyou can't manage, then I'm still here, aren't I?"
He paused for a moment, then said, "As long as I am here, Qiyou will always be the Jade Emperor of Dajing."
For some reason, the Empress Dowager suddenly felt relieved, as if as long as Li Shengxuan's words were there, no matter what happened in the southeast, Li Qiyou would be safe.
As long as I'm alive, that's enough. As for whether I'll become King Yucheng or the future ruler of the world, there's plenty of time.
However, before the Empress Dowager could even breathe a sigh of relief, Li Shengxuan said, "However, if the case of Prince Rong'an involves the Pei family and the Dugu family..."
He didn't continue, and the Empress Dowager's face turned cold. "Do what needs to be done. Now that things have come to this, does His Majesty expect him to punish everyone equally to maintain appearances?"
"The Empress Dowager understands me." Li Shengxuan's smile widened. "I will certainly not disappoint the Empress Dowager."
