Chapter 1920 Balance
"What are you thinking about, sister?" Murong Qing's voice pulled Fang Zilan back from her chaotic thoughts. She concealed her expression and said calmly, "Nothing. Why did you suddenly think of going to Mushan Pass?"
"For you." The three soft words were muffled by the creaking of the carriage wheels, making them barely audible.
Fang Zilan was taken aback, and subconsciously asked, "What did you say?"
Murong Qing pursed her lips. "After Mo Han passed away, have you seen him again?"
“Murong Qing…” Fang Zilan’s hand, hidden in her sleeve, clenched into a fist, her expression gradually hardening. “Don’t mention Mo Han in front of me.”
“That day in the Miluo Palace, I used you…” Murong Qing hesitated, then continued, “I’m sorry…”
Fang Zilan showed no appreciation, scoffed, and said, "What, is the young master trying to use me again?"
"That's not what I meant," Murong Qing quickly denied. Fang Zilan glanced at him. "Then what does the young master mean?"
“I…” Murong Qing took a deep breath, as if making a decision, and said, “When my mother passed away, you supported me, and I was very grateful. This time, it’s my turn to support you.”
Before he could finish speaking, Fang Zilan called out, "Stop the car."
Meng Tingyang, who was driving the carriage, reined in his horse. "Your Highness, Madam, is there anything you need?"
Fang Zilan stood up, lifted the carriage curtain, and jumped down. Meng Tingyang wanted to help her up, but she pushed him away, and he could only watch helplessly as she staggered a couple of steps before managing to steady herself.
“Your Highness, what are you doing…” Meng Tingyang was interrupted by Fang Zilan before he could say anything. However, she was not speaking to him, but to Murong Qing in the carriage, “I don’t need anyone to support me.”
She spoke each word with haughtiness and coldness, as if she wanted to shut down everyone else's words.
Hearing this, Awan, who was in the carriage following behind, jumped off the carriage and asked with a frown, "What's wrong with you?"
Fang Zilan did not respond to Awan's words, but said to herself, "If I can fight for justice, it will be the best tribute to Mo Han."
Upon hearing this, Awan suddenly realized what was happening, as if her suspicions had been confirmed, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
When she first heard that they were going to Mushan Pass, she had a vague guess in her mind, and now it was finally confirmed. Sure enough, their trip to Mushan Pass was to pay tribute to Mo Han.
However, after Mo Han died, he was mistaken for Xu You's son, Xu Yi, and buried in the Xu family's ancestral tomb, not the Mo family's ancestral tomb in Mushan Pass. Will we really be able to see it on this trip?
"Sister, are you truly fighting for justice for Mo Han, or are you using this as an excuse to delay seeing Mo Han?" Murong Qing's voice came from the carriage, still resounding even through the curtain, leaving Fang Zilan speechless for a long time.
"Who says I don't dare to see Mo Han?" After a long while, Fang Zilan finally heard her own voice, each word heavy and suffocating.
"Lord Wei, I have no interest in your privacy or the Wei family's affairs." Fang Zilan looked at Wei Mao expressionlessly and said, word by word, "I am here only to confirm one thing. When Ouyang Zirou's improved crossbow was being deployed in the camp outside the capital, did anything go wrong, causing numerous casualties among the soldiers?"
Wei Mao raised an eyebrow, a look of disbelief flashing in his eyes. He seemed completely unprepared for her purpose, or perhaps he had never heard of this before. Fang Zilan stared intently at Wei Mao, trying to find a flaw in his expression. However, his reaction was too genuine; it wasn't a pretense at all. Suddenly, she understood.
"I apologize for my intrusion today and for disturbing you." Fang Zilan turned to leave after saying this, but Wei Mao called out to her, "Lord Fang, the soldiers in the camp outside the capital would never dare to treat military matters as a joke, let alone falsify them, unless they were tired of living."
"If someone in the Wei family has secretly orchestrated and arranged everything," Fang Zilan stopped in her tracks. "Does Lord Wei think that's possible?"
"Lord Fang, are you referring to Ouyang Wei?" Wei Mao curled his lips into a half-smile. "Even if she had the guts, she wouldn't act like this. Even the most mad members of the Wei family know what's important. Besides, Ouyang Zirou is her own daughter."
Fang Zilan snorted coldly and glanced at Wei Mao with an almost provocative look. "According to what you're saying, Lord Wei, Ouyang Zongrui can actually command the soldiers in the camp outside the capital? It seems that your methods of control are nothing special."
Wei Mao's face was ashen. Fang Zilan added fuel to the fire, "Lord Wei, it's not the light in the front yard that's worrisome, it's the fire in the backyard. Too much of a good thing can backfire. Be careful of the consequences. You'll only deal with the Ouyang family when they've surpassed the Wei family..."
“Lord Fang,” Wei Mao interrupted her coldly, “with your energy for sowing discord, you might as well think about what Ouyang Zongrui is really up to.”
"No need for Lord Wei to trouble himself with that." Fang Zilan glanced down at Wei Xing'er, her face full of the fear of surviving a disaster, but there was no sign of retreat in her eyes.
“Lord Fang, this is a one-time exception,” Wei Mao’s voice suddenly rang out. “This is not a place for you to stay.”
Isn't this the place where it should stay? Fang Zilan smiled bitterly to herself. Coming from the Ghost Gate, she saw mostly discord and such scenes were nothing new to her.
She didn't say anything more, strode to the door, and said to Ashi who was standing by the door, "Let's go."
Ashi bowed to Wei Mao and then chased after Fang Zilan, saying, "Lord Fang, I'll escort you back to your residence."
"No need." Fang Zilan walked into the courtyard, let out a long sigh, as if she wanted to expel everything she had seen and heard underground with that breath.
Seeing this, Ah Shi chuckled and said, "Lord Fang, you have truly impressed me today."
"What do you think I'm going to do?" Fang Zilan didn't look at him, but instead looked up at the bright moon in the sky. It was freezing cold, and her breath blurred her vision, making even the moon seem like a blur.
“After all, it’s a human life.” Ashi turned her head and carefully traced her outline. “I thought Lord Fang would react on the spot.”
“If I were to lose my temper on the spot, I would gain nothing but a falling out with Lord Wei,” Fang Zilan said in a low voice. “I cannot seek justice for her, nor do I wish to drag you down with me.”
“I’ve handled more than just one or two lives,” Ashi said casually. “For me, this is not a burden.”
“Ah, if you treat human lives like ants for too long, you’ll become numb.” Fang Zilan’s voice was soft, but Ah Shi heard it clearly. “Lord Fang, have you become numb?”
Fang Zilan didn't answer and left directly. The curfew had passed, and she was the only one on the empty streets, wandering aimlessly through the most prosperous city in the world, yet feeling a chill run through her body.
