Chapter 52: Echo of Defiance
Chapter 52: Echo of Defiance
As narrated by the event keeper
Skepto paused, standing a short distance from Sane, his eyes narrowing as he marveled at her unyielding will. She clung to her feet, battered and broken, defending her friends even as her life teetered on the brink. A flicker of something—respect, perhaps—crossed his face, but it vanished like smoke.
“I am disappointed!” he declared, his voice booming across the arena. “You’ve let Frederick’s son poison you with his foolish hero naiveté.”
“I won’t let you hurt them!” Sane cried, her heart ablaze even as her vision blurred, her body swaying with exhaustion.
Skepto’s approach was relentless, his footsteps heavy on the blood-soaked sand. “At this point, it doesn’t matter what you think. I’ll force you to evolve if that’s what it takes.” A grim smile twisted his lips, his eyes gleaming with dark excitement. “My ultimate weapon! I’ll sharpen you until you’re deadly!”
He lunged, a whirlwind of violence, his fists raining down in a ceaseless storm. Sane, barely clinging to consciousness, couldn’t dodge a single blow. Blood sprayed, her body a canvas of bruises and lacerations. Yet through it all, her squad and the elites felt only half the torment—the echoes of her pain dulled, a deliberate shield she maintained even now.
Held back by Guardian and John Grey’s iron grips, Cipher watched in helpless horror. Tears streamed down his face as Sane’s strength ebbed, her body crumpling under Skepto’s assault. Fear weakened him, his limbs trembling, his soul fracturing at the sight.
“I see... you’re still protecting them!” Skepto deduced, pausing his barrage to glance at Squadron-X and his elites, writhing in shared agony. He turned back to Sane, his eyes cold. “Then we’ll keep going—until you learn the cruelty and salvation of unmatched power!”
He surged forward again, his strike aimed to end her. Unbeknownst to him, Sane had reached her breaking point. Rage ignited in her chest at the thought of her friends suffering for her. Her fists clenched, and something new stirred within—a surge of raw energy coalescing into small, high-energy spheres around her hands.
She stepped forward in a final, defiant stance. As her fist collided with Skepto’s, a shockwave ripped through the air, an equal and opposite force slamming into his back. He flew backward, crashing into the arena floor with a thunderous impact.
The arena fell silent, eyes wide in disbelief. For the first time, Skepto was down.
Yet he rose with a satisfied grin, dusting himself off. “It’s working!” he exclaimed, striding toward her. “You’re even stronger now. But not quite there. I need to push you further!”
As he advanced, dragon-like scales rippled across his skin, hardening his form into an armored nightmare. Laura Zenith’s eyes widened in terror, and she leapt to her feet. “No...” she whispered, thrusting her arms forward. Massive walls of thick ice erupted between the stands and the arena, layer after layer forming a frozen barrier.
“What are you doing?” Captain Agatha demanded, confronting her.
“Step back!” Laura screamed, her voice laced with panic.
Skepto’s hands glowed green, a sphere of energy coalescing around his fist. With a roar, he unleashed a small, glowing orb—a wave of annihilation that vaporized everything in its path, particles disintegrating in bursts of intense heat and radiation.
The wave struck Sane, her skin igniting, vanishing into nothing. In that desperate instant, her powers reacted again. She poured her last reserves into a null field, bursts of counter-energy clashing with Skepto’s assault, shielding her just enough.
For the others, the wave crashed against Laura’s ice walls, shattering them one by one. She poured every ounce of her strength into reforming them, her body trembling as the death wave finally dissipated.
As the smoke cleared, the stadium’s outer edges lay in ruin—obliterated except for the section behind Laura’s barrier. Cipher felt the lingering heat, the remnants of Skepto’s power searing his skin, and understanding dawned. Antimatter! Particles with opposite charges—positron, antiproton, antineutron—colliding with normal matter to annihilate both, unleashing cataclysmic energy. Skepto could summon antiparticles at will, a force that devoured all it touched.
The truth hit Squadron-X, John Grey, and Victor like a gut punch. Skepto wasn’t just strong—he was a walking apocalypse. Guardian and Grey, drained from the echoed pain, slumped. Cipher shoved them aside and dashed to Sane.
She was fading, her breaths shallow, her strength ebbing like sand through fingers. As she fell backward, Cipher caught her, cradling her in his arms. Her pulse fluttered weakly, and dread clawed at him. Horror twisted into rage, spiraling in his eyes. Predator Mode activated. The air stilled, time itself bending around them, everything grinding to a halt. But Sane’s hand clamped onto his with surprising strength, her touch grounding him back from the brink.
“Cipher!” she whispered, her voice a fragile thread. “Don’t let him make you lose sight of who you are! You were right—we need to protect people from villains like him. You’re stronger than you think. Don’t lose yourself to the power of anger. That’s what he wants. Promise me... promise me you won’t lose sight of goodness in the fight against evil.”
Her words cut through the haze of rage, a gentle pull that steadied his fracturing mind. The storm within him subsided, if only for a moment.
“Sane, I can’t lose you,” he cried, his voice breaking as tears streamed down his face.
“I’ll always be here with you—in your heart,” she murmured, her breath shallow. “Don’t be afraid... use it! The power within you. From the day we met, I’ve felt it. It scared me at first, but you’re different from him. You’re the only one who can stop him! Put this bastard in his place, and show everyone what heroes fight for!”
With those final words, her eyes fluttered shut, her body going still. Cipher lifted her gently, carrying her to his friends, his steps heavy with grief.
“Captain,” he said, placing her in Agatha’s arms. “Look after her for a moment.”
Agatha’s eyes widened, her voice trembling. “Cipher...” But she trailed off, seeing the unyielding resolve in his gaze.
He turned, facing Skepto across the ruined arena. “It’s time to put a stop to this monster’s tyranny!”
“Now we’re talking!” Bill-board exclaimed, stepping forward with fierce excitement.
The others rallied beside him, grabbing their weapons, their faces set in grim determination.
Looking at their expressions, Cipher realized they weren’t afraid—not after witnessing Skepto’s horrors. They stood tall, unbreakable.
“Are you sure about this?” Cipher asked, his voice steady despite the ache in his chest.
William clapped a hand on his shoulder. “Kid, I’ve never been more certain about anything. We’re doing this together!”
“I’m with you to the end, Cipher-san!” Yukio declared.
“We live and die together!” Dmitry growled.
“No dying for me!” Billy added with a defiant grin. “Let’s kick his butt and go home!”
The squad’s voices blended into a chorus of solidarity, but the captain hesitated, her face pale with dread. “We can’t... if we do this and... the world...”
“Captain,” Cipher interjected, his tone firm. “I know it’s scary. But letting him run rampant isn’t a solution. Sane fought for us—it’s time to fight for the world. Skepto needs to be stopped, here and now!”
“Cute,” a voice sneered from behind Cipher, cold and mocking. “You want to stop me?”
Before Cipher could spin around, Skepto’s boot slammed into his back, hurling him across the desolate stadium. Skepto vanished in a blur, reappearing beside Cipher’s crumpled form, raining down punches that buried him deeper into the ground.
The squad’s speed paled against Skepto’s—his was born of sheer strength, propelling him to 1 or 2% the speed of light. It was nothing compared to Victor or John Grey, but paired with his abilities, it rendered their velocity meaningless.
Squadron-X charged to aid Cipher, but Guardian intercepted them, his massive form blocking their path. Laura Zenith, John Grey, and Victor hung back, watching with calculated detachment, wagering on the battle’s end.
William, Yukio, Dmitry, Billy, and Bill-board encircled Guardian, their bodies weakened from Sane’s echoed pain. The fight shifted to endurance. Like William, Guardian’s power was raw brute force, amplified by his solid state. One swing of his polearm Graive could cleave a man in two.
Dmitry swung his hammer first, attacking and countering in a whirlwind. William joined the fray, then the twins, their combined energy manipulation bolstering the assault. The four of them pinned Guardian, but it wasn’t enough.
“Yukio!” William shouted mid-swing. “Go help the kid! We’ve got this!”
With a nod, Yukio slipped past Guardian’s guard, racing to the arena’s far side where Cipher was being pummeled.
Receiving attacks as heavy, each one as thunder ripping the sky apart, Cipher burst from the crater, his body a blur as he flanked Skepto in an instant. Skepto spun around and a chill raced down his spine as he met Cipher’s blue-glowing eyes. The Solid State was activated!
“What are you?” Skepto demanded, his voice laced with uncertainty. He couldn’t sense or decipher Cipher’s power level.
The air shifted, heavy with raw potential. Skepto realized this was no longer a game—this battle held an uncertain end.
