Chapter 421 - 399 Suddenly Inappropriate

The night was growing deeper, and after an evening of laughter and chatter, everyone returned to their rooms.Dudu pushed open the door, the cold room making her shiver slightly. She turned on the light, looked at the glass separating her room from the balcony, and slowly walked over. She drew the curtains back, opened the sliding glass door, and carefully stepped out onto the balcony, peering at the opposite balcony.

The short railing wasn’t difficult for her to climb over. It was much shorter than the one at Shen Yiran’s house. In the past, she would have insisted on sharing a room with him.

Even if he strongly disagreed, she would still have climbed over the railing to see what he was doing alone in his room.

Was he working? Or just smoking absent-mindedly?

He always seemed burdened with heavy thoughts. She had always professed her love for him, yet she understood nothing about him. She didn’t know what he needed, what he was thinking about, why he smoked so much, or what was troubling him.

And she had never considered his feelings, only annoyed him and bothered him constantly. No wonder he disliked her so much.

The night sea was very calm, with gentle ripples on the surface, the soothing sound of waves, and the cool ocean breeze blowing.

Dudu walked to the edge of the balcony, leaned against the railing, and slowly closed her eyes.

She only opened her eyes when she heard the faint sound of footsteps nearby. He was standing on the adjacent balcony, his gaze fixed on the distant sea, as if he hadn’t seen her at all. But then he spoke, "Not sleeping yet?"

Dudu withdrew her gaze, glancing around. If it weren’t just the two of them, she would have thought those words weren’t meant for her, as he hadn’t even glanced in her direction.

The soft words were quickly carried away by the wind, but Dudu kept them in her heart, her mind repeatedly replaying his question, "Not sleeping yet."

After a long while, she replied softly, "Neither are you."

Only then did he turn to look at her, "I thought you weren’t going to talk to me."

Dudu remained silent this time. She wanted to act cool and ignore him, but when he initiated the conversation, she couldn’t keep up the pretense. She was still so hopelessly weak.

While she was lost in thought, she saw Shen Yiran effortlessly leap over the railing, and it reminded her of the embarrassing time she had scraped her butt doing the same.

Dudu glanced at him and moved a bit to the side, but she didn’t evade him like she did the night before.

The two stood side by side in silence for a long time before Shen Yiran broke the silence, "Why did you get a divorce?"

Dudu froze briefly, murmuring in response, "We weren’t suited for each other."

"Didn’t you realize that when you got married?"

She fell silent. When she got married, it was just to spite him. She hadn’t even considered whether they were suitable. She never expected her act of defiance to become a joke. He never cared about her.

"...We suddenly just weren’t compatible."

Shen Yiran looked down at her, but she only glanced at him briefly. When she saw him looking at her, she quickly averted her gaze, pretending to look at the sea.

"When do you plan to remarry?"

Dudu pouted, feeling awkward at his elder-like concern. She replied uncomfortably, "I’ll get married whenever I meet the right person."

"What makes someone the right person?"

"Someone who looks pleasing," she replied casually. He knew she liked him, yet he still asked her these questions.

"Was it because I looked pleasing that you used to like me too?"
