Chapter 314 - 292: As Long as You’re Willing, I Can Be Your Bride Today (8)
Grand wedding cars formed a line across the street, drawing the attention of many passersby who took pictures with their phones.Dudu sat inside the car, her face adorned with delicate makeup beneath the white veil, but she showed no signs of bridal joy.
The wedding venue was a traditional church, arranged by her parents and the Qiao family. She had never visited it, not once, appearing nothing like a bride-to-be.
Qiao Luchen’s thoughts were a mystery. There was no real affection between them, and they had little private interaction. Yet, he always acted concerned about her in front of the elders, kindly and considerate, even willing to marry a woman he did not love.
She had wondered, perhaps it was simply because her father was the hospital director, while his father worked at the hospital. Could there be some benefits after marriage?
But then she felt such thoughts were abject. His parents were honest people, very approachable, perhaps they just purely wanted this girl to settle down...
Thinking this way, she felt sorry for the Qiao family, feeling herself quite despicable. Initially, she intended to use the relationship with Qiao Luchen to incite Su Bao, never imagining it would evolve to this point.
But she had to confront it; since she couldn’t be with Su Bao, this day was inevitable. Maybe ending it sooner would be a relief for both her and Su Bao.
"Tongtong, what’s wrong? You seem distracted today. Make sure to be happy when greeting the guests later."
Dudu really didn’t want to wear a mask to welcome the wedding guests. She only wanted to find a quiet place to cry.
"Mom, I’m feeling a bit unwell..."
"What’s wrong?"
"I’ll go inside and sit for a while."
Dudu found an excuse to go to the lounge, while her mother went to the door to greet guests.
As soon as the door to the lounge closed, Dudu sat on the sofa by the window, lost in thought. Qiao Luchen opened the door and walked in, "Not even committed to acting?"
Dudu turned her head and saw it was him; she didn’t respond.
Qiao Luchen, in a sharp white suit, strode over with his long legs and sat beside her, "This is the wedding you wanted. Now everything is ready. What do you want?"
Only then did Dudu look at him, "Qiao Luchen, why did you agree to marry?"
"No reason. You wanted to play, so I played along."
Dudu frowned at his words. Sometimes, she really couldn’t understand his mindset, "Is marriage something to casually treat as a game?"
Hearing Dudu’s words, Qiao Luchen sneered, "I’ll return those words to you. If you know marriage isn’t a game, then even if it’s an act, perform well. There are many guests today."
Dudu turned her head, a bit irritably, "I’m just feeling a little unwell. I’ll go out after resting for a while."
Qiao Luchen did not ask her what was wrong upon hearing this. He left the room with a faint smile.
Dudu stood up and walked to the full-length mirror by the window, looking at her reflection.
As a child, she always fantasized about the day she’d wear a wedding dress and marry the person she loved the most.
She had no idea how many times she dreamt of it. Dreamt of him saying he liked her, dreamt of him accepting her, of their wedding that belonged to them, dreamt of their happy days after marriage...
Yet, all were shattered illusions. One person alone cannot build love, let alone maintain and nurture it. Their ending might have been destined from the beginning to part ways...
Not much of a life, twenty years all about him, and love isn’t measured by the length of time, is it?
