Chapter 279 - 257: The Child is Born Belonging to the Gu Family

Mrs. Gu sighed softly, led the servants out of the room. She knew her son’s nature well; what he didn’t want to accept, no matter how hard you forced him, it was useless. He tended to do the exact opposite.Once again, he was alone in the ward, holding a cartoon-themed thermos, feeling somewhat tasteless.

He knew she had been at the hospital these days, and he would ask the nurses about the child’s condition, but he had never gone to her ward to see her.

Even though he was very angry with her behavior, he couldn’t bring himself to truly hate her.

Just then, a nurse walked in to massage his legs. Gu Moming put the box aside and told the nurse, "Bring the wheelchair over."

The nurse paused, saying, "Aren’t you eating? Where are you going?"

Gu Moming glared, raising his voice, "I told you to bring it over!"

Everyone in the hospital had heard about his temper and stubbornness. The nurse didn’t persuade him any further, putting away the massage equipment and bringing the wheelchair to his bedside.

He lifted the quilt, swung his legs to the floor, and sat in the wheelchair by himself, ignoring the nurse next to him, and wheeled himself out of the ward.

The nurse, worried something might happen to him, didn’t even tidy up the instruments and hurriedly followed him out.

Gu Moming stopped at the corner room of another ward, stopping at the doorway. He looked up at the window on the door but couldn’t see anything from his wheelchair.

After pausing at the door for a moment, as if hesitating, the nurse came over and gently persuaded, "Go in and see her."

When Xiaoxiao was previously in the hospital, everyone thought they were a couple. So this time, when they both were hospitalized, clearly their wards are so close but not interacting, everyone was speculating about what happened between them.

Many guessed that the child Xiaoxiao was carrying wasn’t Gu Moming’s; which explained Gu Moming’s coldness and refusal to even glance at her.

However, the whole hospital knew how well Xiaoxiao took care of him. Even if the child wasn’t his, no matter the circumstances, it was necessary to pay some courtesy visits.

Gu Moming remained silent, and the nurse stepped forward, gently pushing open the ward door, as if afraid of disturbing the person inside, speaking softly, "She might be sleeping. Due to her pregnancy, her appetite has been poor, and she has hardly eaten anything these days."

Ignoring whether Gu Moming wanted to know or not, the nurse went on talking, detailing Xiaoxiao’s recent conditions to him.

As a woman, she could understand the hardships of pregnancy, which is why she sympathized even more with Xiaoxiao’s plight.

In the hospital, apart from the nurses who took care of her daily, her brother and sister-in-law would occasionally visit. Most of the time, she lay in bed alone. Because she needed to rest for the baby, she rarely got out of bed, and there wasn’t even anyone around to talk to her.

Gu Moming stared at the open door of the ward, making no move to enter, his gaze falling inside the ward, where he could just faintly see the woman lying on the bed.

The nurse poked her head in, whispering to him, "Go in. She’s sleeping; you can take a look at her."

It wasn’t the first time he inquired about Xiaoxiao’s condition; clearly, he still cared about her in his heart.

After a moment of hesitation, his hands slowly moved, and the wheelchair inched forward. Then, as if making a decision, he quickened his movements, swiftly closing the distance to her.

The nurse smiled, quietly closing the ward door, leaving the space to the two of them.

Perhaps it was just a misunderstanding that hadn’t been resolved. It seemed like they could be a very happy family.

Watching her lying on the bed, with only her head sticking out of the quilt, Gu Moming’s movements involuntarily softened.

He looked at her sleeping face unabashedly. Not seeing her for a few days, she had noticeably lost weight; the cute baby fat on her face was gone.

His gaze slowly shifted from her face to her abdomen. The pregnancy wasn’t showing yet, and with the quilt covering her, there was no sign of the child.

He couldn’t bring himself to blame her because he had never given her anything, yet she chose to suffer to give birth to this child.

He wondered if he should call her foolish; had she ever thought about how giving birth to the child would impact her life and future?

First, there was her education, then her future. Was she planning to raise the child alone, or was she intending to marry another man with his child?

Either way, it wasn’t the best choice. She was the kind of girl who could have had a wonderful future. Why did she have to like him?

She moved a bit under the quilt, smacking her lips. Perhaps feeling his gaze, she slowly opened her eyes.

Her bleary eyes first saw the ceiling and didn’t notice the man by the bedside.

Yawning, she looked quite cute in her lazy state. As she turned to adjust her posture to continue sleeping, she saw the man beside the bed.

Her movement stopped abruptly, her gaze falling on his face, full of disbelief.

She gripped the quilt, thinking his appearance seemed like a dream.

After that day’s incident, she never hoped to see him again, especially with such a calm expression.

She rubbed her eyes, looked at him again to make sure he was still there, and pinched her hand to confirm she wasn’t dreaming.

However, the next second, her nerves tightened, and she looked at him warily.

Was he here to take the child away? He had said he didn’t want this child...

Seeing her sudden change of expression, Gu Moming’s frown deepened, which made her even more cautious. She gripped the quilt and sat up, leaning on the headboard, moving a bit away from him, the distance small but piercing his eyes. Her voice trembled, "Do you have something to say?"

He didn’t speak, just reminisced about the past her, who would greet him with a sweet smile, even when he never showed her a kind face, she always faced him with a smile, just like her name.

However, the girl who used to love smiling now looked full of fear and vigilance.

Gu Moming looked at her for a long time before speaking, "You want to give birth to the child?" His tone was scornful.

Because of his icy tone, Xiaoxiao swallowed hard, speaking even more cautiously, "I know you don’t like it... In the future, let me and the child disappear from your life. Don’t worry, I won’t disturb you with the child."

"...But please let me give birth to this child. In the future, I will try not to appear in your sight. Is that okay?"

Her humble plea felt like poisonous needles stabbing into his heart.

Giving birth to his child yet claiming not to interfere with each other’s lives?

How thoughtful!

Gu Moming suddenly laughed, a laugh that sent chills down one’s spine. "Fine, give birth. But I can tell you clearly, once the child is born, it belongs to the Gu family."

With that, he turned his wheelchair and headed for the door, ignoring the stunned woman on the bed.
