Chapter 27 : Bone Demon Lao Gu
Chapter 27 : Bone Demon Lao Gu
The Dread Wolf ran wildly with the Armored Crocodile close behind. Their destination was not far, and in just a few minutes they arrived. Before long, the gentle sound of flowing water reached the ears of the two demonic beasts. The trees gradually grew sparse, and the forest soon opened into a clear space.
A shallow river appeared before them.
Along the river were several wandering demonic beasts, seemingly searching for something.
“Looks like someone got here before us… Heh.” Dread Wolf laughed angrily. “Just a few low-tier demonic beasts, yet they actually dare to enter the Mountain Lord’s territory.”
At that moment, one of the beasts wandered to a patch of Spirit Moss. It scraped up the moss with its claws, then licked it with its tongue, narrowing its eyes in obvious enjoyment.
Among the demonic beasts of Mount Qi, low-tier demonic beasts were practically at the bottom of the hierarchy. Yet even such creatures dared to swagger into the Mountain Lord’s territory and covet the Spirit Moss that should belong to them.
The Dread Wolf was furious.
“Brother Crocodile, get ready to move! This area used to be the Mountain Lord’s drinking spot. A lot of Spirit Moss grows here. Although Spirit Moss is the lowest grade among low-tier spirit herbs, there’s a huge quantity of it. As long as we gather enough, the improvement it brings won’t be any worse than a mid-grade spirit herb!”
After notifying the crocodile, the Dread Wolf immediately burst forward, rushing at the beasts like a wolf charging into a flock of sheep.
Those demonic beasts resembled antelopes, but each possessed a mouthful of sharp shark-like teeth. From a distance they looked somewhat ferocious. However, the moment they saw the black wolf beast charging through flying debris, their ferocity vanished instantly. Like frightened birds, they scattered and fled.
Unfortunately, the speed of low-tier demonic beasts was no match for a Dread Wolf.
One unlucky antelope-like beast was pounced upon and pinned to the ground. The wolf’s sharp fangs showed no mercy, tearing open flesh and sending blood spraying several feet into the air.
Demonic beasts still followed their primitive jungle instincts. In ordinary times they might coexist peacefully, but once spirit herbs, things tied directly to their advancement, were involved, the savagery in their blood would erupt.
Another terrified antelope beast tried to cross the river. But before it could wade through the water, an even more ferocious predator burst from the shallows.
The crocodile.
Before the antelope could react, the Armored Crocodile dragged it deep into the river. Half its body submerged beneath the water. After a few desperate struggles, it went completely still.
In just a few breaths, two low-tier demonic beasts had met their doom.
All of this fell into Su Xiao’s eyes.
Not far away by the riverbank lay another corpse that had not yet gone cold.
Su Xiao had been running through the night when she discovered the tracks of the Dread Wolf and the Armored Crocodile. Adjusting her direction, she arrived near the shallow river shortly afterward. And just moments earlier, she had witnessed another unlucky low-tier demonic beast wander into this area and get surrounded and killed by the group of Sabertooth Antelope beasts.
Here, there was no talk of good or evil.
Only the simple law of the strong devouring the weak.
The Dread Wolf was like this. The Armored Crocodile was like this. And even the fleeing Sabertooth Antelopes were the same.
Su Xiao understood this rule almost instantly.
“So this is the law of the jungle…”
Watching everything unfold, she felt little joy or sorrow. She still hadn’t fully accepted her identity as a demonic beast, but she also had no intention of judging this world by human morality. Instead, the sense of crisis in her heart deepened. Perhaps one day, she might end up like the lonely corpse lying nearby.
To avoid that fate, Su Xiao chose to become stronger. Not only to survive, but also to make sure she never became someone pitiful.
“Relying on others means never controlling your own destiny,” she murmured to herself. “In my previous life I was at least a strong person. In this life I have the system. There’s no reason I shouldn’t become strong again.”
With the system in her possession, she had a path to power. As long as she used it wisely, she might still carve out a chance at survival.
Watching the reversed situation, Su Xiao had felt a little emotional.
The Sabertooth Antelopes that had been aggressors earlier had now become victims.
But what surprised her more was the appearance of the Dread Wolf and the crocodile.
“So they only just arrived… I thought they had already crossed the river. The moment they showed up, they started hunting these Sabertooth Antelopes. It’s almost like fate, every cause has its consequences.”
Su Xiao sighed softly at the strange workings of destiny.
“Still, these antelopes are a bit strange. They seemed to be searching for something. But how would a few low-tier demonic beasts dare to openly search for things inside the Mountain Lord’s territory?”
She noticed the abnormality, but didn’t act rashly even though those antelopes were only low-tier demonic beasts, and Su Xiao, who had already faced a Refined Spirit, felt no fear toward them.
She had absolute confidence she could kill one with a single strike. Unfortunately… she only had one shot. The Frost-Yin Fox Fire was powerful, but it was basically a one-bullet kill. After that, she would have no ammunition left.
“Fifteen points of Spiritual Power still isn’t enough,” she muttered. “Maybe I shouldn’t have upgraded the Fox Fire back then. If the cost were still just two points of Spiritual Power, my attack methods would be much more flexible.”
She felt a little regret. On the surface she had three abilities, but in reality the only one usable for combat was the Frost-Yin Fox Fire.
What was she supposed to do otherwise? Run in and swipe with her tiny claws? Just imagining that scene made her twitch awkwardly.
Fortunately the Dread Wolf and the crocodile haven’t crossed the river yet, she thought. With a damage dealer and a tank, life shouldn’t be so difficult anymore.
Su Xiao organized her thoughts and decided to follow her original plan, approach the Dread Wolf and the crocodile and find a way to persuade them.
Well… persuade was the wrong word. Cooperation couldn’t be called tricking, right?
Su Xiao decided she would sincerely cooperate with them. Work together, grow rich together, and march toward a prosperous future. Just as she was carefully planning her next move—
A thunderous roar suddenly exploded across the riverside, “WHO DARES KILL MY SUBORDINATES?!”
The sound was part deer cry, part ape howl, mixed with an eerie, sinister aura.
The Dread Wolf and the Armored Crocodile instantly widened their eyes.
“Damn it… Did I accumulate eight lifetimes of bad luck?! That’s a Refined Spirit–level demon specter… Bone Demon Lao Gu!!”
