Chapter 97: The Wheel of History

Chapter 97: The Wheel of History

Nemus's voice resonated like a parting bell, carrying a heavy yet indistinguishably hazy quality.

Hearing Nemus's words, Westbin paused before speaking.

"The Book of Ages allows you to glimpse certain fragments of history."

"By combining it with Fey Blood—brewing a secret potion with the fresh blood of a Fey—there is a slight chance to peer into the realm of the Legend Rank."

After his strike failed to land and such a phenomenon beyond common sense occurred, he understood that he was already beneath the wheel of history. Struggling was futile.

This was the backlash of prying into history, a burden he could not bear. His eyes betrayed a fear of death, worry for his wife and son, and a deep unwillingness to accept his own failure.

"My mother holds the recipe for the secret potion, and my wife knows a fair bit of Potioncraft!"

"My son is the best source of Fey Blood!"

"I could easily choose to destroy this book instead of leaving it behind!" As Westbin spoke, the turbulent emotions in his eyes gradually faded, leaving only a final trace of absolute resolve.

"However, I wish to make a deal with the Great Knight.""You want to exchange this for my protection over your family?" Nemus naturally saw through the man's intentions.

"Exactly. The flow of history, that single thread of the Historical Number, is not something easily grasped. It could take decades!" Westbin nodded. "I spent over twenty years, yet I only ever saw a glimmer of possibility."

"You will need to look after my family for at least a few decades."

"I have already told them. When you go to them with the Book of Ages, they will understand."

"Now it just depends on whether you possess the magnanimity to accept this."

"Of course, I will offer a show of sincerity first. There is a problem here in the Dung Path. With your abilities, a careful investigation will uncover it."

At this point, Westbin glanced at the Whale Dung Beetles transporting material within the Dung Path, then waited for Nemus's response.

"Hand it over!" Nemus reached out his hand with almost no hesitation.

The reward: the power of a special Fey bloodline and a chance to glimpse the Legend Rank.

The risk: the future danger of not pulling up the problem by the roots, potential issues from the main branch of the Lillian Family, and finally, the inherent risks within the mechanics of such an ability.

From Westbin's behavior, it was clear that his desire to fight was not particularly strong.

It felt as though even if Nemus did not strike him down, he would not live much longer anyway.

This was not surprising, considering he had peered into history.

For powers related to destiny, suffering a corresponding backlash was incredibly normal.

But so what? Nemus found himself exceptionally interested in it at this moment.

The Breath of Holy Precepts inherently offered revelations. Combined with his understanding of destiny, he knew that as long as he wanted to continue climbing higher, encountering such abilities in the future was unavoidable.

"The tide of history is still a tide. Why wouldn't it be just another challenge!"

That confidence blooming from within made Westbin freeze.

Once upon a time, he had been just as confident. Believing his talents were no lesser than those of the direct lineage, he had resolutely taken his mother away to establish a branch family.

However, two or three years ago, he finally realized that success was already beyond his reach.

He had not lost to Nemus; he had lost to history, to destiny. Under the surge of various emotions, the last trace of Westbin's resentment ultimately dissipated.

He tossed the Book of Ages to Nemus, then revealed a hidden trap he had originally never intended to mention.

"The Historical Number is not so easy to obtain. It requires matching ability and talent. Otherwise, you will only be abandoned by history, crushed beneath the wheel of history just like me."

He also threw the Forest Treasure Sword in his hand. The blade spun through the air before stabbing into the ground right in front of Nemus.

"Kill me. Let me witness that sword of yours that dares to strike at history itself!"

Catching the Book of Ages, Nemus held the tome in one hand and grasped the sword planted before him with the other.

"Mystic Sword: Whirling Swallow!" The blade edge shifted slightly, transforming into a flash of white in the very next instant.

By combining magic with his sword techniques, Nemus's renewed research in this lifetime was already showing preliminary results.

His body slightly brushed past his opponent, and he slowly sheathed the sword in his hand.

"So fast," Westbin sighed in admiration. His body then slowly collapsed.

Blood sprayed from the fatal wound, hissing like the wind.

Nemus stood tall, looking down at the dead Westbin, faintly trying to grasp onto something intangible.

Not far away, a white-haired figure slowly materialized.

"Looking sharp, handsome!" Angel A strolled over with a teasing remark, instantly shattering the hint of mystery brought about by his closed eyes.

Previously, it was Angel A who had been secretly monitoring Westbin's family, and it was he who provided Nemus with the correct direction. His Maverick trait left him unaffected by destiny-type abilities, ensuring Nemus did not lose the trail.

"What is the situation over at the Dung Path?" Nemus asked.

Calling Angel A over was meant to add a layer of insurance. After all, Westbin's Attribute Value was not low, and he possessed a special bloodline ability.

However, he had not expected things to evolve into this current state.

Westbin's resistance was much weaker than imagined.

Obtaining a Fey artifact related to the hidden secrets of history was an unexpected surprise.

Seeing that Nemus offered no response to his teasing, Angel A curled his lips in boredom and got down to business.

"It is highly likely related to the Floating World Society!"

"The number and condition of the Adult Insect Whale Dung Beetles are not normal."

The dung beetles constantly pushed dung balls. Once they grew into an Adult Insect, they would stop pushing and simply reap the rewards of others' labor.

When the other beetles pushed the dung balls over, they would forcefully occupy them, rapidly draining all the nutrients inside.

This naturally led to a decrease in the production within the Dung Path.

That was why the Church would clear out the adult insects as soon as they were discovered.

"I believe this abnormality stems from the Whale Dung. The nutrients in the Whale Dung are far too rich."

As soon as Angel A said this, Nemus understood.

"There is a problem with the Whale Dung, or rather, a problem with the Floating Whale itself. It has triggered a series of changes, resulting in the mutation of the dung beetles."

"According to the system, once a dung beetle is killed, it is sent away to have its final bit of value extracted."

"Such mutations can be fairly easily detected from the corpses."

"That is why they tried to find a way to prevent those Intern Holy Knights from killing them."

"But why didn't the members of the Floating World Society try to clear out the adult dung beetles first?"

"That way, this entire situation wouldn't have happened in the first place!"

Nemus's mind raced, quickly identifying the flaw in that logic.

"Then there is only one possibility. The problem arose a long time ago, but the Floating World Society had been finding ways to clean it up and cover it up all along."

"However, recently they suffered heavy personnel losses, coupled with widespread surveillance by the Judgment Squad."

"Some of them are no longer capable of handling the cleanup!"

On this singular point, the Floating World Society had given themselves away.
