Chapter 91: Kindred
Chapter 91: Kindred
Many details remained undiscussed, as their cooperation had yet to officially begin.
Furthermore, Nemus had not received any feedback from the Oath-Keeping Precept.
This indicated that while the contract had been established, it was not yet in its completed stage.
He would likely need to wait until he successfully resolved the issue and the trade was officially established before any new feedback appeared.
"When the time comes, help me spread a message first," Nemus instructed Dong He as a matter of course before leaving the tavern. "Just say that I will take good care of Westbin's family."
Dong He froze for a moment, then nodded, realizing just how fearless Nemus truly was.
Strictly speaking, Westbin was still somewhat related to him.
The so-called Minor Nobles were essentially offshoots of the main noble houses.
Among the descendants of noble families, the family name was inherited by the Eldest Legitimate Son. But what about the other descendants who possessed innate talent?
Armed with decent innate talent and unwilling to abandon the path of cultivation, they faced a reality of limited local resources. Thus, to avoid internal strife, they naturally established Branch Families and ventured to other regions to fight for resources. If they achieved something, they would become the patriarchs of a Minor Noble household, capable of upholding a certain degree of prestige.
Dong He's family also shared a bloodline connection with Westbin's main noble house, though they could hardly be considered a Branch Family.
Dong Luo's father lacked innate talent but was unwilling to be trapped in one place. Thus, he chose to come to Tail Fin Town, intending to hitch a ride to the back of another whale during the mating season.
In essence, he had run away from home. Yet, he met his lover in Tail Fin Town, eventually settling down and having Dong Luo.
Dong Luo possessed excellent innate talent. Swallowing his pride, his father pleaded with the main family for assistance, allowing Dong Luo to enter the Church and become a cleric.
Westbin's family was a different story. They were a legitimate Branch Family, one that could still inherit the noble title.
The two families maintained contact, but it was merely that—contact. Over the span of a century, many relationships had soured or changed.
These matters were no great secret. During one of their previous conversations, Dong Luo had recounted the family's history.
At the same time, he had warned Nemus to be wary of Westbin.
"The family's bloodline is inherited from a certain special creature."
"We have lost that aspect of our inheritance, leaving our bloodline abilities rather fragmented. But Westbin's side still retains the formal family legacy. Because of that, their development of the bloodline is likely far more profound."
An Iron Rank knight with an attribute value of eighty, possessing special bloodline abilities, who had lost his identity, status, and future, and was currently a wanted fugitive—such a man was essentially invincible.
To openly declare an intent to go after his sole remaining family members...
That was a true declaration of war against Westbin, and an undying one at that.
At any rate, Dong He himself would never dare to do such a thing.
Even the Judgment Squad felt the same. They wanted to capture Westbin, as letting him escape was already a grave dereliction of duty on their part.
However, they only monitored Westbin's family without disturbing them too much.
What they feared most was Westbin disregarding everything and launching a suicidal retaliation against them.
Dong He, who initially harbored some dissatisfaction toward Nemus, immediately became obedient.
His grandfather, Dong Luo, had been right. His cultivation talent was passable, but when it came to his mindset, he was still lacking.
"I await the Great Knight's triumphant return," Dong He could only offer those words in farewell to Nemus.
Watching Nemus's retreating back, Dong He felt an inexplicable surge of admiration for a man like him.
In the carriage heading back to the Cathedral, Krew utilized spells to communicate with the horses, commanding them to return to the stables. Afterward, he fell into silence, though the Wooden Bird perched on his shoulder remained perfectly steady.
"May I ask why?" Krew suddenly broke the silence.
"Why what?" Nemus looked at Krew, his eyes appearing unfathomably deep. "I was only assigned as your attendant priest yesterday," Krew continued. "You don't know anything about me..."
"There are two ways of getting along in this world."
"The first is through prolonged contact, entering the other person's life and forming familiar habits. These habits can be based on mutual benefits or emotional connections, thereby solidifying the relationship."
"The other is through Kindred Traits." As Nemus mentioned this, Purr, who had been sitting to the side, looked over, his eyes shining brightly.
His faith also became increasingly pure at that very moment.
"Purr and I are kindred. We share similar traits. That is why the very first time I laid eyes on him, I knew he could become my companion."
"You and I are kindred as well. We possess complementary traits. While I don't know exactly what you are hiding, I can sense it."
"Your heart is currently being drawn to my traits, and I likewise need your traits for assistance."
Nemus elaborated on his theory of traits.
Whether similar or complementary, they were fundamentally kindred spirits. This kinship transcended bloodlines and species.
It required no repeated validation over time, nor did it need the inertia built through long years of familiarity.
It was much like mass—the immense Gravitational Pull generated by powerful mass could warp Space-Time itself.
Time and distance would never be an obstacle between them.
"Krew, the moment you said you wanted to fly, you and I became kindred."
Krew stared blankly, meeting Nemus's gaze. At that moment, as he looked into Nemus's unfathomable eyes, he realized they were not just dark voids. Instead, they resembled a starry sky, flickering with fiery red starlight that seemed to ignite Krew's very soul, bringing his entire being to life.
"Kindred..." Krew Krew gazed at Nemus, finally feeling the sensation of kinship that Nemus had described. It was a Sensing that transcended bloodline, time, and distance.
Krew's body swayed for a moment, and then another Krew materialized inside the carriage. The difference was that this second Krew emanated a highly distinct Demonic Aura.
Both Krews lowered their heads simultaneously, swearing their absolute allegiance to Nemus.
This was Krew Krew's hidden secret: he possessed the Double Demon Bloodline.
Although he had but a single soul, he possessed two physical bodies.
Normally, these two bodies overlapped, presenting the outward facade of an ordinary human.
Meanwhile, the body bearing the demonic bloodline remained hidden within a kind of overlapping domain, rendering it incredibly difficult to detect.
Because of his dual nature, Krew often appeared indecisive and lacked initiative.
Whenever he looked at anything, he could perceive more facets than an ordinary person would. And when he pondered, he was quite literally thinking with two brains at once.
He instinctively kept himself hidden, deeply reluctant to make any proactive choices.
"As expected, Krew!"
"You truly do complement me!" Nemus laughed in sheer delight. The Oath Rope extended outward as a sealing aura circulated around him, followed by a trace of Dark Aura seeping from his form.
That Dark Aura resembled a dense mist, and within the fog, specks of fiery light glimmered.
In his current state of One Body, Two Souls, he and Krew were absolutely kindred!
This similar yet complementary existence brought a profound sense of peace to Krew.
Nemus's philosophy on kindred spirits meant Krew no longer had to feel anxious about his own bizarre existence. It provided Absolution to his soul.
