Chapter 99 **
Chapter 99 **
Maya
I'm nervous about inviting Finn inside of my apartment. I'm fumbling for the keys while he is behind me, taking in the walls.
"This place is nice," Finn comments and whistles. I'm having trouble not jumping into his arms—he looks so inviting when I glance over my shoulder, especially with the dimples in his cheek. "Are you rich, Maya?"
The admiring glint in his eye makes me blush. I'm bad with receiving compliments, especially when they come from gorgeous young men. I have to turn around and focus on the door not to melt into a puddle. Every nerve of my being wants Finn, but I have to fight it.
We wouldn't last.
We wouldn't make it.
I would get hurt.
"No, but I'm good at saving money."
Finn beams at me. "I can tell."
"Yeah..."
My breathing is wild when I turn my key. Soon the tall, sexy man will enter my personal space and see the paintings I've made and everything that makes me Maya.
I take a deep, shuddery breath. "I hope Jenna will be fine without her sister, Bianca, by her side. The vampire cops had Jenna's memory removed about what happened tonight. I'm glad they left my head alone after you convinced them we were both fairies."
Finn breathes a laugh. "We are both white-haired, so it was pretty easy to fool them; besides, you're gorgeous, Maya—you could easily pass as fae."
I turn around, and Finn gives me a confused smile as if he doesn't understand why I'm suddenly looking at him but is happy about the attention, regardless.
He is gorgeous.
And I want to kiss him.
Shit, I need to get a fucking grip!
With a speeding pulse, I change the subject. "Do you seriously think it was my sister who kidnapped Bianca?"
"Yes."
We step into my apartment. I take off my shoes, and Finn does the same without a word. A smile curls my lips, realizing he mimics me, and I walk into the beige living room.
My couch is blue, and the paintings on the walls are of women's faces, portraits painted in screaming colors. I've made them myself and hold my breath while Finn is studying one of a girl crying. She is locked inside a cage in a foster position.
"Is this..." Finn narrows his eyes and takes a step closer to the melancholy painting. His face turns thoughtful, and then he turns around, giving me a sad smile. "This is you when you lost your wolf."
"Yes..." I nod and stare down at the floor. "Losing my inner wolf made me feel shattered and locked up—like I didn't have access to a huge part of my soul. It wasn't easy, but I managed."
Finn meets my eyes. "Like your mother, Patricia, you were born to lead. You have a powerful mind, and your wolf isn't gone. She is waiting for you to find her."
I sigh. "What good would it do to become a werewolf once more? I'm enjoying my life as a human."
Laughter erupts from Finn's throat. "And yet every painting you've made says otherwise."
I pout. "It's just paint and color, Finn..."
A sigh fills the room. "Maya, that paintings over there-..." Finn points at the one hanging above my light blue couch. "That one is of the full moon over your town, so please, don't try to convince me the werewolf life isn't calling to you."
Frustration builds within me. "And so what? If I want the werewolf life, what difference does it make?! I don't have a pack!"
Finn laughs. "Oh-my-god, Maya! Don't you understand it yet?! I thought the wheels inside your head would work and turn by now—your sister kidnapped Bianca for a reason—she can never be the true alpha before she has beaten you in a duel! The pack belongs to both of you!"
I furrow my eyebrows. "But how can the pack also belong to me when I'm not even a werewolf?"
"But you are a werewolf!" Finn runs his hands over his face with this massive smile taking his lips. He seems both amused and frustrated; it's a sexy look for him. "Did you ever vocally tell your sister that she can have the Winterbite pack?"
"No."
"And your mother, who is calling you all the time, do you ever pick up on her phone calls?"
"No..." I gasp in shock. "Wait, how do you know about my mother's phone calls?!"
Finn smirks. "I came back to the human world once—to help your mother and father defeat June. And then your mother somehow managed to contact me a few months ago, saying she was worried sick about you."
My heart stops. "What did my mother say?"
"That one of her daughters is hating the supernatural world and is refusing to accept her inner wolf, regardless of everyone else knowing she isn't a human."
"My family knows I'm not a human?"
"Your entire pack does. You don't smell like a human, little wolf—you carry the scent of a werewolf, a powerful one too."
"Oh..." I stare at Finn, then part my lips. I have many questions burning inside my head, but there is one I need to be answered now. "Finn, why are you in the human world? Tell me the truth."
Finn smiles at me, then walks over to the couch, taking a seat. It's strange seeing him wear human clothes. The cargo pants fit his muscular thighs and somehow make him appear even bigger. His suit is tight, leaving hints of the cobblestone abs hiding behind it. Fuck. I want to rip off his clothes and lick every inch of his skin.
"After Alice opened up this magical telephone connection, and I talked with your mum, I realized that maybe there were things still to be done in the human world, especially since my sister is in your world."
"Your sister?"
"Yeah, Kyra..." Finn grimaces. "The tree of life revealed her mate is in the human realm, and so my sister escaped to your realm as soon as I opened the portal—she is the criminal I'm here to chase down. Well, she isn't evil or anything, but I'm worried about her roaming around on earth alone."
"Ah," I suck my lips into my mouth, feeling hurt that Finn isn't only here for my sake, but then again, family is essential. "So you're bringing her home?"
Finn lifts his eyebrows and laughs. His dimples show, and I will be damned, but I smile with him, although I haven't got a single clue why he is laughing.
"What?" I ask.
Finn gives me a telltale smirk. "I'm not going back to the fairy realm. The portal can only be opened once every hundredth year, so Kyra and I are stuck here for a while, little wolf."
