Dear Enemy, You're My Mate

Chapter 90 **

Chapter 90 **

Maya

I'm a wreck of emotions, driven by anger, when I take the shape of my midnight wolf and lounge for Arvin's throat. The man is laughing and easily evades my rage-motivated attempts to kill him.

I land in the grass and growl at the man, who seems more than amused by my temper.

"Oh, Maya, you have to think before jumping at your enemy. Your attacks are way too predictable. You're not thinking straight; perhaps you should lie down and take a break!"

Arvin kicks me in the stomach and sends me flying. I cough up blood and lift my head, eyeing the hybrid while he burns Finn's unmoving body. He seems to be absorbing Finn's powers while the witches are chanting, including Alice.

"Soon, I will be the most powerful werewolf that has ever lived, and once your lover's powers are mine, I will make both this world and earth entirely mine. My mother will be given your wolf spirit, and together we shall reign over every other living creature!"

I stare at Arvin, horrified by his words. And for the first time, I question my choice of not giving Finn my inner wolf. Perhaps he would still be breathing and smiling at me if I had not been so selfish.

"Maya?"

Slowly, I turn around to witness my sister, Lily, heading my way with a sad smile spread over her lips. Right now, she looks so much like our mother Patricia that I experience shudders.

"Thank god you're okay," she whispers and caresses my back with a shaking hand. "Arvin told us Finn had kidnapped you, and since the world is such a messed-up place, everyone believed him. But I saw the way that he looked at you..."

A low, sorrowful whimper leaves my mouth. Although Finn isn't my mate, my lungs are burning, while my heart is being torn apart by the thought of never holding him again.

Finn, with his easygoing smile, and charming laugh, won me over from the start. We might not be the same species, but he is kinder than any man I've ever met, and although some girls like to go for the bad guys, I was perfectly content with my teddy bear of a fairy.

I can't believe Finn is gone!

Why does everything wrong happen to me? I wish I had held him longer and kissed his lips forever. If I had known today was our last day spent together, I would have told the truth: you have ruined me for other men, and I don't think I will love anyone else again.

"Listen..." Lily lowers her head with determination in her eyes. Arvin is laughing like a maniac in the background, testing the elemental powers he stole from Finn. "You have to run away from here."

What?

Is she crazy?

I shake my head abruptly, hoping Lily will understand that I will never abandon her. We are sisters, and even though it's hard remembering the times we still hung out with each other, I love her.

Lily is shedding tears with quivering lips. "You have to, Maya! I know my position as the alpha of our pack made me shove you to the side, but I love you, and I want you to survive! Dad is locked up, and so is mum—you have to find them. Arvin is too powerful—we can't beat him alone-..."

I scream when Arvin rushes forward, grabbing Lily by the throat with his lips curving into an evil smile. "Running that smart mouth, are we? Well, let's take care of that for you."

The hybrid lifts Lily higher into the air, making her kick in desperation with her legs. Panic settles into her expression, and I bolt forward, but it's already too late—her head rolls to the side of Arvin's feet.

In the background, I can hear Alice screaming. "Lily? LILY! Arvin, what the hell have you done?!"

Arvin cackles. "What does it look like I'm doing, witch? I fooled the bunch of you, and now, no one possesses a threat to me. I'm a god, while you're pathetic ants."

I lift my gaze, studying the hybrid finishing a witch in the blink of a moment to showcase his speed and strength. He is laughing like the sick person he is.

"Feels great to possess so much power!" Arvin dips his head, biting into the witch's neck to draw blood. It trickles down his cheek, and his eyes go cold and black like the murky ocean.

I narrow my eyes and notice Alice is paralyzed by the scene and probably experiencing a life crisis finding out the hybrid tricked her into murdering the only person capable of stopping Arvin—Finn.

"And you!" Arvin turns to face me, tilting his head with blood dripping from his red-coated lips. "How about fighting me now?"

Before I can react, shadow creepers step up from the ground while roots break the ground, grabbing my feet. It seems Arvin has already figured out how to use Finn's abilities.

"Fancy powers, right?" Arvin laughs. "And now, prepare to get knocked out good!"

Arvin lifts a boulder from the ground with his earth abilities, throwing the heavy thing in my direction. The hybrid seems so sure of his victory, but I'm pissed off—game on.

I howl at the sky, raising a shield around me powerful enough to block the boulder hurled at me. But the shadow creepers are still trying to drag me into hell, making it hard to stand my ground.

"How about some wind then?"

A wind rises, and I close my eyes at the hurricane screaming in my ears. I'm unsure how to defend myself against the wind, but Alice steps into the battle, deflecting Arvin's magic with her teeth gritted.

With her red hair fanning around her head, and Arvin blasting fire into her face, Alice turns around to peer at me. "I'm sorry for what happened to Finn—I honestly thought he had gone mad."

Alice sheds a tear, and then she disappears from my line of sight when the fire pulls through. She burns to a crisp and falls to the ground, roasted like a pig for Christmas.

"Damn, these powers are amazing!" Arvin is celebrating his fourth kill for the night, smiling like a fool.

I lift myself from the ground, wishing I was anywhere else. If only Beatrice, Finn's mate, had never met him, and Finn hadn't passed on the knowledge of how to turn a fairy's abilities helpful to humans to her.

If Beatrice never knew how to create those crystal orbs, Finn, Lily, Alice, and that other witch would maybe still be breathing!

My eyes widen at my realization, and with a huff, I turn tail and run in the opposite direction.

Arvin yells after me. "You can't run from me, Maya!"

Oh, but I intend to try!

I jump over the shadow creepers climbing to the surface with determination rushing through me. The tree of life said I couldn't change the past in that vision, but what if Carla was wrong?

What if I can go back in time and kill Beatrice before she meets Finn? I'm not a murderer, but it's the plan I've conjured. She is the reason so many bad things happened to Finn, and without the council gaining fairy abilities, so many things would change in our world—I can only hope for the better.

I shudder. God, hopefully, I'm right about this.
