Chapter 679: Chapter 678: You Care About Me (6)

Who’s talking? Is that Chuxia? What is she saying?

Shi Che’s consciousness had not fully cleared just yet, and he could only faintly hear that familiar voice by his ear, hoarse and with a sobbing tone, laced with resentment.

As soon as he sensed that resentment, Shi Che’s chest felt as if it was being heavily stricken by something. How much must Chuxia hate him... Was it that no matter how he tried to make amends for his mistakes, he could never earn her forgiveness?

But indeed, he was a bastard; he married her intending to treat her well, to make her happy, but during those three years, he gave her nothing but cold neglect or cold violence. It was only natural for Chuxia to hate him.

But... a child?

The word "child" seemed to seep slowly into his ears, and Shi Che’s brow furrowed subconsciously. Child? What child? Their child, him and Chuxia? What was Chuxia saying?

Why not want her child?

These nine words reverberated in his ears, and Shi Che’s heart shook violently. What did it mean not to want her child? When had he ever not wanted their child? What exactly was Chuxia talking about?

He desperately wanted to open his mouth and ask Chuxia what all of this meant, why she thought he didn’t want their child. But although he opened his mouth, his throat felt as if it had been stuffed with cotton, and he couldn’t make a sound. He also wanted to open his eyes, but his eyelids felt as if they were being weighed down by a heavy mountain and wouldn’t budge. Finally, as he struggled, his consciousness gradually peeled away from his body and, reluctant as he was, he fell back into unconsciousness.

-

The next day.

The hospital room was silent, and the warm yellow light from outside seeped in, little by little illuminating the entire room.

Shi Che’s eyelids fluttered, and the next second, his dark eyes suddenly wide open. Because he opened them so quickly, and his gaze met the bright light, he squinted slightly in discomfort.

It took a while before he got used to the light. His black pupils rigidly and slowly rotated, scanning his surroundings. Everything was white, and he could smell the sharp scent of disinfectant in his nose, making him realize he was in a hospital.

Memories surged into his mind like a tide. The scene in the elevator from yesterday - it was such a brief moment, yet filled with heart-stopping terror. He stood inside the elevator, feeling acutely the shock of falling from a high-rise building for an instant. But at that moment, he had only one thought: to hold Ling Chu tightly in front of him, to not let her get hurt.

When the elevator came to a crashing stop, his brain hadn’t completely lost consciousness. He actually heard Ling Chu calling out to him, but he couldn’t respond to her. He couldn’t smile at her amidst her panicked and tearful cries, to comfort her and tell her not to be afraid, that he was okay.

In the end, he plunged into endless darkness.

At that moment, he was actually a bit worried he might not wake up - not because he was afraid of dying, but because he worried Chuxia would be scared. At the very least, he wanted to respond to her call.

Now that he could open his eyes once more, Shi Che’s heart rippled gently. Even as the pain in his body surged up all at once, a slight smile appeared on his lips. He could wake up, so Chuxia wouldn’t be scared anymore, right?

But where was Chuxia? Was she hurt?

Shi Che’s gaze swept around the room with some urgency, only then noticing that there was a slender figure leaning by the side of his bed. Her hands were stacked under her head, and her beautiful face was turned towards him.

Shi Che’s dark pupils fixed firmly onto her face.
