Chapter 1044 - 53: People Are More Beautiful Than Clothes
The time waiting for the results passed exceedingly slowly. Zimei was filled with anxiety, sitting there tightly holding Ye Cheng’s hand, her soft palms continuously damp with sweat. When they finally saw Professor Berlant in his white coat walking over, Ye Cheng’s heart tightened as well.
He pulled Zimei to her feet and was the first to ask, "Professor, how are the test results?"
Berlant glanced at Zimei, his gaze pausing on her vacant eyes for two seconds before turning to Ye Cheng, saying, "Mr. Ye, please come with me."
Ye Cheng was momentarily stunned, then nodded, "Alright."
The two of them walked into the consultation room beside them, while Zimei was left outside alone.
Professor Berlant hadn’t asked her to join them to hear the results. Zimei had a vague idea of what was going on. Initially, she had held onto hope, but such a result instantly shattered her hopes.
She sat there with her head lowered, her hands tightly clenched together, trying hard to hold back the tears in her eyes. She didn’t want to cry because no amount of tears could bring back her sight.
People walking up and down the corridor saw the aura of sadness and grief emanating from her and looked at her with sympathetic eyes.
After closing the door to the consultation room, Professor Berlant handed the report in his hands to Ye Cheng and asked him a question, "Mr. Ye, could you tell me what kind of relationship you have with Miss Zimei?"
Ye Cheng was looking down at the report written entirely in English. Hearing this, he looked up at the professor, a bit puzzled.
Why was he asking such a personal question?
Despite his confusion, Ye Cheng answered confidently, "She is my fiancée."
The man’s deep-set eyes were filled with determination, and he wasn’t lying.
"I understand," Professor Berlant seemed a bit surprised but also delighted, "Would you be willing to make some sacrifices for her?"
Sacrifice?
Ye Cheng was even more astonished but didn’t hesitate for a moment before nodding, "Yes, even if it means giving my life for her, I would be willing."
Professor Berlant’s eyes flashed with admiration and respect as he said, "It’s actually not that serious; I might need one of your corneas."
Ye Cheng’s eyes opened slightly wider. After a few seconds of being stunned, he suddenly asked with joy, "Professor, do you mean that her eyes can see again?"
"That’s right. Miss Zimei’s eyes are damaged to varying degrees. One can be restored with a corneal transplant, but the other..."
At this point, Professor Berlant regretfully shook his head, "With the current level of medical technology, we are temporarily powerless."
Ye Cheng quickly understood what the professor meant: only one of Zimei’s eyes could regain sight...
However, the situation was much better than he expected.
It’s something to be thankful for; at least she doesn’t have to live in darkness anymore.
Professor Berlant continued, "There are millions of blind patients in the world, all waiting for corneal transplants. But since the available number is very small, many people may not get a chance in their lifetime. So I brought up the topic of voluntary donation with you, hoping you understand."
Ye Cheng said without hesitation, "I am willing to donate my cornea for her, and I hope you can arrange the surgery as soon as possible."
"Mr. Ye, your spirit of sacrifice is admirable. However, Miss Zimei’s eye damage is not limited to the cornea. She needs to undergo a period of treatment before surgery can be arranged."
"Alright, I understand."
Ye Cheng talked with Professor Berlant for about half an hour before coming out of the consultation room.
