CEO Ex-Husband, Don't Bother Me

Chapter 233 - 181: Saved (2)

Chapter 233 - 181: Saved (2)

The boat was now out at sea, and she was utterly helpless. She glanced back and saw Caleb Rhodes and the maritime police in speedboats, rapidly closing in. Not daring to move him again, she quickly took off her own padded jacket and draped it over him. Then she just sat beside him, holding his hand, weeping with helplessness and self-reproach.

If he hadn’t been trying to save her... The bodyguard in the wheelhouse heard the gunshots and rushed out. He saw Julian Donovan lying on the deck and was about to charge forward, but he was shot dead by the police and Caleb Rhodes’s team as they arrived.

Caleb Rhodes and the others rushed over. Their faces fell at the sight. "What happened to him?"

"While he was saving me... he hit... he hit his head..."

At Caleb Rhodes’s question, her tears became even more uncontrollable. Since she had given her jacket to Julian Donovan, and with the winter air on the open sea, she was frozen stiff, her limbs numb and her body trembling violently. Seeing her state, Felix Draper immediately took off his own coat, wrapped it around her, and said, "I’ll pilot the boat!"

As soon as the boat docked, doctors from Mercy Hospital, who were waiting on the shore, rushed aboard. They carried Julian Donovan off the boat and rushed him to the hospital for emergency treatment. Naomi Shaw had already prepared for the worst. ’If he really has a brain injury and falls into a coma, or worse, I’ll stay by his side forever. I’ll take care of him for the rest of our lives, with our two children.’

’From this day forward, our family of four will be together forever. We will never be separated again.’

After the consultation, the final diagnosis was just as she had feared. Severe trauma to the head had caused a large hematoma, which was compressing his cranial nerves and had left him comatose. Even though she had braced herself for the worst, the world went dark at the news, and she would have collapsed if not for Caleb Rhodes and Felix Draper catching her.

The doctor sighed. "There are two options right now. One is to wait and see if the body can absorb the clotted blood on its own. The other is to operate immediately to remove the hematoma. But... the surgery is extremely risky. Very few surgeons would dare to perform it, because if it fails, he’ll never wake up!"

After the doctor finished, Caleb Rhodes and Felix Draper turned to look at her. Everyone was waiting for her decision. Dazed and numb, she stumbled to a nearby bench, sat down, and buried her face in her hands.

’What should I do?’

She wished someone could give her an answer; she didn’t have the courage to accept either risk. ’Why isn’t there a way for him to wake up, safe and sound?’

Caleb Rhodes and Felix Draper fell silent as well. After a moment, the doctor spoke up again. "Have any of you ever heard the name ’Midnight Sun’?"

"Midnight Sun?"

Neither Caleb Rhodes nor Felix Draper was involved in the criminal underworld or the medical field, so they’d never heard the name. But for Naomi Shaw, it was a ray of hope. She quickly raised her head and looked at the doctor, her eyes full of expectation.

The doctor explained, "People in both the underworld and the medical community have heard of her. She’s a legend, known for her extraordinary surgical skills. I believe if we could get her to perform this operation for President Donovan, it would be a success. Sigh... President Donovan himself is a brilliant surgeon. If this had happened to anyone else, he could have performed this operation without a problem. But now that he’s the patient, looking at the options, only this Midnight Sun could possibly do it!"

Naomi Shaw shot to her feet, her voice trembling with excitement as she rushed to the doctor. "Then where is she? Where can we find her?"

The doctor shook his head regretfully. "I honestly don’t know. She’s incredibly mysterious. No one has ever seen her face or even knows her real name. I heard she retired years ago and cut off all ties with the underworld. I’m only telling you this because you all seem well-connected. You might be able to find out her current whereabouts!"

The doctor had barely finished speaking when Felix Draper pulled out his phone and called Henry Hale. "Julian Donovan’s been injured. We need a surgeon named Midnight Sun, urgently. Find out where she is, now!"

Of their group of four, Julian Donovan and Henry Hale had the most dealings with the underworld. With Julian incapacitated, Henry was their only hope for finding her. On the other end of the line, Henry Hale asked no further questions, simply hanging up to dispatch his people.

After Felix Draper hung up, they waited with bated breath for Henry Hale’s call. Naomi Shaw prayed silently, over and over, begging that her years of faith would be enough to bring her beloved back to her, whole and unharmed.

When Felix Draper’s phone finally rang, all eyes snapped to him, brimming with hope. He listened to Henry Hale, then hung up and turned to the others. "She’s married to Aiden Grant, the Second Young Master of Dragon Gate!"

Caleb Rhodes frowned. "Aiden Grant? You mean the CEO of Baijue?"

Felix Draper nodded. "That’s the one. Alright, Mr. Rhodes, you stay here and keep an eye on things. I’ll go get her immediately. We’ve had some business dealings with Baijue; I’m hoping they’ll help us out for the sake of our connection."

Caleb Rhodes nodded and asked, "Where does she live?"

"In a nearby city. Thankfully, it’s in the north, just like us. If I take the highway, it’s only about a four or five-hour drive!"

"Thank you both!"

Naomi Shaw stood there, overcome with a mixture of sorrow and relief, repeating "thank you" through a fresh wave of tears.

"Don’t be so formal with us. We’d be devastated too if anything happened to Julian Donovan."

With that, Felix Draper spun around and rushed out, determined to bring back the surgeon as quickly as possible. After he left, Naomi Shaw’s legs gave out, and she sank to the floor. ’At last,’ she thought. ’At last, a glimmer of hope.’

Caleb Rhodes came forward and helped her to her feet. "You’ve been through hell today. Let me take you home so you can rest. The children are with their grandmother, so you don’t need to worry about them."

She shook her head. "No, I’m staying here with him. I won’t be able to rest for a single second until he wakes up."

Wiping away her tears, she turned with renewed determination and walked into the hospital room. Caleb Rhodes stood outside, watching as she gently wiped Julian Donovan’s face and arms with a washcloth. He watched as she took a water-dipped cotton swab to moisten Julian’s lips. And he watched as she leaned down to kiss Julian’s cheek, his own eyes welling up with sorrow for them.

Yes, his heart ached for both of them and the endless trials they had endured.

’My own relationship with Lillian Huxley has been complicated, but at least it was never a matter of life and death. We lost a child, but we never faced the true specter of being torn apart by death like this.’

Naomi Shaw gently kissed Julian Donovan’s pale cheek. She then sat down in the chair beside his bed, took his hand, and pressed her face into his palm, murmuring softly, "Julian... if you wake up, I promise I’ll have another baby with you."
