Chapter 225 - 176: How Are Things Progressing Now?
After speaking, he turned and strode toward the door. She got up and followed, her voice tinged with hurt as she asked, "Where are we going?"
"Home!"
He tossed the single word at her without looking back. The tip of her nose stung, and she almost burst into tears. ’Home? How long has it been since I’ve been back to *our* home?’
She said nothing more and simply followed him to the elevator. Julian Donovan glanced at her, noting how she kept her head bowed in silence. ’She’s not crying, is she? I’ve only just started. Can she really not handle it?’
Once they left the hospital’s administrative building, they had to walk to the parking lot. The sky outside was overcast, and the wind was so sharp it felt like a blizzard was imminent. Having just woken up, Naomi Shaw shivered the moment the wind hit her. Just as he was about to head off, he stopped, took off his overcoat, and draped it over her. Before she even had a chance to speak, he turned and walked away to get the car.
’His hot-and-cold behavior is driving me crazy! If he’d just been consistently cold, I could have handled it. But one minute he’s kissing me, and the next he’s draping his coat over me. My heart is in knots, and this uncertainty is torture. He should just put me out of my misery. Break up or stay together—I’ll accept whatever he decides!’
Just as she was stewing in her thoughts, he pulled up beside her. She opened the door, slid inside, and he drove off in the direction of his villa. They rode in silence until they stopped at a red light, where he suddenly spoke. "Until Sean Donovan is dealt with, you, Dylan, and Joy are not to go outside."
"Oh..."
She nodded. She knew he was doing this to protect her and the children. After a moment’s hesitation, she asked, "So... what’s the latest on the situation?"
’He’d kept her with him for no clear reason since that morning, and she hadn’t worked up the courage to call the police officer, afraid she’d be criticized for handling things poorly. Strangely, though, the officer hadn’t contacted her either.’
The words had barely left her mouth when he turned his head and shot her a fierce glare. The look was a clear warning: Don’t ask about this again. Remembering he was still angry with her over this whole affair, she felt a surge of frustration and quickly added, "Never mind. Just pretend I didn’t ask."
The light turned green, and the car moved forward at a steady pace. As she watched the bustling city streets slide by, her thoughts somehow turned to Sean Donovan. "If Sean Donovan gets caught... it’s a death sentence, isn’t it?"
Julian Donovan snorted. "Of course it’s a death sentence. Manufacturing over 50 grams gets you the death penalty. At this point, the amount he’s made over the years could be measured in tons!"
A wave of sadness washed over her, and she let out a long sigh. His voice, sharp and jealous, immediately cut in, "What? You feel sorry for him?"
She ignored his jealous tone. "No! I just think it’s a waste. He’s so brilliant with pharmaceuticals. Why did he have to go down this path?"
"He was shown the path to heaven but chose to break down the gates of hell instead. Who can he blame but himself?"
Julian Donovan’s tone was detached. She fell silent, saying no more. ’It’s true,’ she thought. ’The line between a saint and a sinner is a single thought, and Sean Donovan, tragically, had become a sinner.’
The moment they got home, the two children threw themselves at her. She sank to the floor, hugging one with each arm as tears streamed down her face. Seeing this, Julian Donovan let out a cold snort and walked right past them. ’She brought this on herself! That heartless woman. She was even willing to abandon her own children just to complete that damn mission for the police!’
In the end, it was the thoughtful Dylan who comforted her. "Don’t cry, Mommy. As long as you’re back, everything’s okay."
Without a word, Joy reached out a small hand and gently wiped away her tears. Naomi wiped her eyes and kissed both of her children on the cheek. "Have you two been behaving yourselves these past few days?"
Dylan nodded. "Mhm. Joy and I didn’t make Daddy angry, and we didn’t make a fuss asking for you, because we knew you hadn’t really left us. We knew you’d definitely come back!"
Dylan’s words made Naomi Shaw’s heart ache. ’How could the children be so certain they wouldn’t be separated?’
She glanced over at Julian, who was standing to the side with his arms crossed, watching them coldly. Fresh tears welled in her eyes. ’I’m back, but what if I can’t earn his forgiveness?’
Julian Donovan finally couldn’t bear to see her sitting there looking so lost, but his tone was still icy. "Are you planning to sit there all day?"
His coldness made Naomi Shaw’s heart ache even more. Wiping away her tears, she got up with the two children. Julian Donovan walked over and took them by the hand. The moment he faced them, his tone instantly softened. "Go wash your hands. Mommy and I are going upstairs to change, and then we’ll all eat together."
