Chapter 187 - 155: Slander
The financial and medical worlds were once again thrown into turmoil. Meanwhile, Julian Donovan’s camp calmly issued a denial: he had never renounced his inheritance rights. If Charles Donovan had any proof to the contrary, he was welcome to publicize it for all to see.
「Meanwhile, at Charles Donovan’s nursing home.」
In high spirits, Julian Donovan got out of his car and strode inside. A beautiful nurse came out to greet him, respectfully handing him a file. "Boss, here is what you asked for."
He took it with a smile, elegantly pulling out the document. After a quick glance, he proceeded inside, looking pleased.
Charles Donovan was visibly frail. Julian could tell at a glance that the man was terminally ill, but he said nothing. ’Someone like Charles Donovan would be better off dead.’
Despite his condition, Charles Donovan managed a defiant and smug smile upon seeing Julian arrive. "Julian Donovan, no matter how hard you try, you’ll never beat us!"
Julian found Charles pitiable. ’All that scheming, and for what? He’s ending up with nothing.’ He gave a soft chuckle and shook his head at the old man. "You’re wrong."
With that, he held up the document in his hand for Charles to see, watching with satisfaction as the color drained from the old man’s face.
Charles Donovan’s hands trembled as he stared in disbelief. "That document... How... how did you get your hands on it?"
Indeed. The document in Julian Donovan’s hand was the very proof of renunciation he had personally signed years ago, forfeiting his inheritance rights.
Julian Donovan smiled coldly, his eyes fixed on Charles. He then raised the document and, right before the old man’s eyes, began tearing it to shreds, piece by piece. As if driven mad, Charles lunged from his wheelchair, trying to stop him. Julian simply sneered and took a small step back, letting Charles collapse pathetically onto the floor.
Gasping for breath, he roared at the nurse, "Help me up! Stop him, quickly!"
But the beautiful nurse’s usual gentle smile had vanished, replaced by a cold, detached expression. She looked down at Charles Donovan sprawled on the floor, her tone flat. "I’m sorry, but I don’t think my boss would permit me to help you."
Charles Donovan instantly understood. Due to the document’s sensitive nature, he had hidden it in a secret location, a location he had revealed to this nurse and no one else. She had worked by his side for so many years, and he had believed her to be completely loyal. That was why he had trusted her with the secret. He never imagined she would betray him!
Overcome with fury, he coughed up a mouthful of blood.
By now, the document was nothing but confetti in Julian Donovan’s hands. He bent down, squatting in front of the gasping Charles Donovan, and began to sprinkle the pieces over the old man’s head. His smile was sinister. "My apologies. She works for me. I went to great lengths for this document, you know. Screened thousands of candidates to find one capable enough to plant by your side all these years."
Ever since Charles had forced him to sign that document, Julian had been consumed with getting it back. He’d constantly schemed for a way. As luck would have it, Charles’s health began to fail, and after retiring, he moved into the nursing home. Julian seized the opportunity, handpicking a trustworthy subordinate to place by Charles’s side. Her only mission was to gain his trust and retrieve the document. And now, at long last, he had succeeded.
Charles Donovan could no longer utter a word as blood gushed from his mouth. Julian sprinkled the last of the confetti, then rose with a grin. "Consider these scraps my early offering of funeral money for you. When you do die, I won’t be attending the funeral. It would be too disgusting."
Having said his piece, he turned and walked away, his triumphant laughter echoing behind him. Enraged, Charles Donovan spat another mouthful of blood and passed out.
His condition was so severe that the nursing home staff rushed Charles Donovan to the Donovan Group’s hospital. Hearing the news, Sean Donovan also hurried to the emergency room. As it happened, Naomi Shaw was one of the nurses heading in with the doctors to treat him. When she saw Sean, she cast a quick glance his way.
But in that brief glance, she noticed something indescribably strange in Sean Donovan’s expression. It wasn’t anxiety or heartbreak; it was an emotion she couldn’t quite name. Before she could dwell on it, she followed the doctors into the emergency room.
They managed to save Charles Donovan’s life, but his condition remained critical, so he was transferred directly to the intensive care unit. There, he was placed under the care of Naomi and her team.
